EXCLUSIVE: I’m told that Warner Bros is getting a new script from Akiva Goldsman for the first installment of Stephen King’s mammoth Western The Dark Tower, and that within two weeks, the studio will be making a decision on whether to green light the first leg of one of the most daring and ambitious projects to come along since The Lord Of The Rings. And here is a new wrinkle to add to the mix. Javier Bardem is no longer in the mix as gunslinger Roland Deschain. I’m told that director Ron Howard and producers Brian Grazer and Goldsman have been talking with their A Beautiful Mind star Russell Crowe about playing Deschain. While there is no deal with Crowe, that is the star that Warner Bros will be evaluating as the studio decides on whether to take a leap on an eight-volume book that has a huge following, with Howard, King and their partners planning a multi-platform presentation that could be unforgettable. The story will be told through three films and two limited run TV series.
The Dark Tower is about the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers, with Deschain becoming humanity’s last hope to save civilization as he hits the road to find the Dark Tower. Along the way, he encounters characters, good and bad, in a world that has an Old West feel. When I last wrote about this, Universal had dropped out and Warner Bros had sparked to the idea of taking on this franchise, possibly with HBO handling the TV component that would bridge the the first and second feature films, with another limited run TV series to follow. Given HBO’s adventurous forays into fantasy with Game of Thrones, it seems like the ideal venue.
If Crowe stepped up as the gunslinger, it would certainly help the project. He has clearly gotten back into the leading man game where he was when making films like Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind. Crowe played a big role of Jor-El in Warner Bros’s Man of Steel relaunch of the Superman franchise, and he is currently playing the title Biblical hero in the Darren Aronofsky-directed Noah for New Regency and Paramount. We’ll know soon if that resurgence takes him into an Old West fantasy, courtesy of what King has called his answer to JRR Tolkien’s The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.
In a climate of fear and remakes–is Sony Pictures actually remaking Jumanji, a film that came out less than 20 years ago?–it would be grand to see Warner Bros have the stones to take the kind of daring risk that seems only to be taken by the likes of HBO, Showtime, AMC and other pay and cable networks. It’s that risk taking that has put those networks in a position of being at the center what will eventually be viewed as a golden age for daring quality TV series.
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

I agree with you 100%, Crowe just doesn’t seen to be a good fit for Deschain. I would also maybe look at Viggo Mortensen who I think could do the part
Hi,
Just saying that i think it is wonderful that someone is thinking about taking on this project and making a movie of the Gunslinger. In my oppinion it is one of the best works of Stephen King. I am a big fan of his and he is a great writer. I have no oppinion of who should play the gunslinger but he should be someone like Chuck connors who played the rifleman or someone like leonard nimoy who played spock. tall good looking and strong. After all the gunslinger in my mind was a hero. someone who was the leader.. it will be great no matter who they pick. like i say i dont know anything about picking actors , ill leave that up to the people who do know..but i do know what i like…oh one last thing.. i picture the gunslinger as being native, indian.. ..thats all i have to say so thank you for letting me voice my oppinion… have a good day all…
I always picture Viggo Mortensen when I think of Roland.
I had always visioned Sam Elliot as Roland, I don’t know if we ever offered the part or not but Roland was a ruff haggard man. Even Tom Selleck would fit into this roll. Not saying Russell Crowe couldn’t do it but this is what I always visioned Roland to look like. Who’s playing Eddie, Susanna and Jake?
Clint Eastwood as Rolands father?
Damien Lewis and Jason Lee were excellent as a team in Dreamcatcher and I think they would do this justice, not sure about Thandie Newman, she can be annoying and needs to be more fiesty…I personally would welcome any showing of this amazing saga however and whoever …just get on with it!!. say thankya….
I always thought Viggo Mortensen was Roland in my mind. But then with him already doing Lord Of The Rings, it may be overkill. He is just what I always picture when I read the books. I do also like the idea of Hugh Jackman. Either way, I hope they do the books justice and I can not wait to see all of it.
For me sean Bean World be the best
Timmothy Olyphant? Justified? Anyone? Seriously, Crowe? There are so many other choices.
“Timmothy Olyphant? Justified? Anyone? Seriously, Crowe? There are so many other choices.”
Are there? The film needs a MEGA-STAR willing to commit to a multimedia project for Howard, and Olyphant isn’t a legitimate consideration, commercially-speaking.
Really? Roland HAS to be played a “mega star”? Was Elijah Wood a “mega star” when he was given the lead role in “Lord of the Rings”? In fact, were there ANY A-list “mega stars” carrying that trilogy? (There were some well-respected old-timers, sure, and quite a few actors *became* mega-stars because of the movie, but that’s not the same thing).
Not to mention that there are other people commenting here, equally as adamant as you, who make a convincing case that it’s exactly the WRONG strategy to cast Roland with an A-list star; that in fact audiences will have an easier time accepting the character if he is played by a talented, yet relatively unknown actor.
In that regard, Timothy Olyphant fits the bill perfectly.
“Really? Roland HAS to be played a “mega star”?”
Yep. Whilst I concede that none of the actors in LOTR were stars at that time, the source material was iconic for multiple generations. It didn’t need a star because the source material or the concept was the star. Less people are familiar with the ‘Dark Tower’ series, so it needs more star power to justify an investment of this scale.
Ok, assuming your line of argument is an accurate reflection of what Hollywood execs are thinking (and I’ve no reason to think it’s not)… could they justify (pun intended) a lesser star in the lead if they populate the major supporting characters with the requisite “mega stars”?
Let’s not forget, they need the rabid fan base on board if they are hoping to maintain positive word of mouth on the final product.
I think the best actor to play Roland would be Vigo Mortensen (?), think that’s how you spell it. before I even heard they were making a movie I said he should do it. he’s played gritty characters (eastern promises) and he’s around the right age.
Still think Viggo Mortensen would be perfect. If you think of him in LoTR, that’s Roland Deschain alright.
Crowe is a better choice than Bartem. I think Bruce Willis has the best attitude for Roland. But when I first saw Mads Milkkinson(?), Dracco from Clash of the Titans, I leaned to my brother and said “That’s Roland”
I think Crow is an interesting choice for Roland but the one actor I think would work is Michael Wincott as he’s got the rugged look and a gravelly voice like i expect Roland to have.
As for Odetta I think a good choice would be Whoopi Goldberg as she’s got the acting ability to do the split personality of the character.
For Eddie I think an interesting choice would be Edward Furlong, yes I know he’s had personal problems with drugs/alcohol but to me that would help as he would be able to realate to the Eddie character
although i, as a general rule, cannot stand crowe (come on guys, did no-one see the abomination that was robin hood?!), i can’t help but think he wouldn’t make a bad deschain. as far as the look goes, i think it’ll be hard to find someone more suited than bardem, but crowe isn’t a bad choice imo. bale – no. just no. his work has improved a lot over the years but for me he is no roland. hugh jackman – actually although hugh is leagues behind some of the big talent in hollywood, i don’t think he’d be a bad choice either. the big one for me is eddy; i’m gonna risk the wrath of the internet here and say i’d love to see mark ruffalo or ryan gosling in this role (both completely different, but i think they’d put their own very interesting spins on the character).
anyway, really glad to see the project is still being discussed, but can’t help but think it’s destined to be us king fans’ white whale
I think it should be Daniel Craig or Viggo. Two weathered bad asses.
I would love to see Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Eddie.
Christian Bale as the lead?..He would SUCK in this role.
I think that the character of Roland needs to be played by someone with a face like a younger clint eastwood that solid chisiled featured face but I don’t have anyone in mind
Crowe is better than Bardem for the role, but personally I’d LOVE to see Hugh Laurie in the main role. That would be fantastic.
I could see Crowe if he had a way to look much more gaunt and haunted. Dude is obviously eating well. That just doesn’t fit for the Gunslinger ye kennit? Olyphant, while a remarkable actor, is far too young. Bale would suck, because well, he kinda sucks. Guy Pearce would do a marvelous job IMO.
“Olyphant, while a remarkable actor, is far too young.”
Well at least we can agree that he’s a remarkable actor.
I don’t get this knock that Olyphant is too young. The books say that Roland is a thousand years old, but they also say that in external appearance he looks to be about 40. Timothy Olyphant is in his 40′s. And, being “a remarkable actor,” he could easily play at having a thousand-year-old soul.
So… where’s the problem?
I still think it should be Viggo Mortenson.
I like the idea of Russell Crowe, but my favorite choice for the role of Roland would be Timothy Olyphant. He just doesnt have the blue eyes, but he definitely has the rest. This is so critical and if not cast correctly, the rest of it will not work.
as great fan of his books i wood even recorment myself for the part of Roland.
and i’m cheaper then Russel is ever going to be.
but i really looking forward to see his books as movies.
Roland=Hugh Laurie… tall rgged blue eyes and narro of hip… I DARE YOU to find someone who would drag more loyal fans and who needs(whether he wants) a new vehicle…
Look y’all, Roland was based (heavily) on Clint Eastwood. By all rights, he should be stepping into this role, but he is obviously too old. The best option to do this series justice will be to bring Peter Jackson in as director and forget the box office entirely in favor of a protracted series on HBO or Showtime (full creative license is a must–no censorship of the material). A relative unknown needs to be found to play Roland; indeed, the entire cast would benefit from staying away from Hollywood’s upper echelon. This story is far too good to become anyone’s vanity project.
