EXCLUSIVE: Christopher Eccleston has been set for the villain role in Marvel Studios’ Thor: The Dark World, starring opposite Chris Hemsworth in the role of Malekith The Accursed. If you don’t know who
Malekith is, your Hall H privileges at Comic-Con are officially suspended. He is a super-villain in the Marvel Universe, the ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim. In the Marvel Comics, he clashed mightily with Thor, and will go up against the hammer-wielding son of Odin in the film directed by Game of Thrones‘ Alan Taylor. He once wielded the Casket of Ancient Winters. We know Eccleston from Doctor Who, and he is repped by Principal Entertainment.

So now the “Dark World” subtitle is a bit more clear..
As I recall Eccleston was also Destro in G.I Joe; Rise of Cobra
Interesting to hear that Malekith is the main villain, which I kind of saw coming after the subtitle was announced, but it is absolutely awesome to hear that the Ninth Doctor is going to be playing the role. He’s definitely got the tall lanky appearance to fit the role, and he’s a talented actor. This has definitely got me excited about this movie.
There’s only one thing you can say about this…. FANTASTIC!
Excellent Who reference. I love it.
SWEET…….
Awesome casting news, but I am still sad that Mads Mikkelsen had to drop out.
Now all we need in a Thor movie is Beta Ray Bill.
Good casting.
Wow, I guess I’ll have to give you my Hall H entrance badge, despite having lined up the night before. I’d never heard of Malekith, but I was hoping for an appearance by the Enchantress.
An appearance by Enchantress might not be TOTALLY out of the question? But it’s really interesting to learn that Malekith will be the main threat, it’s where my head went immediately after hearing “The Dark World”. I think Taylor’s going to do a really good job with this…
Great! I’ve been waiting to see more of the good Doctor since his short story arch in Heroes.
Ooh, who was he? I saw Heroes, but as it aired and I just wached Doctor who recently so I never made the connection!
He played the man that could make himself invisible.
He was the invisible man at the end of season 1
Awe. Some.
We also know him from ‘Jude’.
I’m very impressed with your comic knowledge Mike, nice job.
I think Mike went to Marvel.com and looked on their wikipedia section. If Mike really knows all this from memory then I’m very impressed. But the internet can provide anyone with any information they need in one minute or less.
Don’t bore you? Well, I hope I don’t… I can’t wait to see him in Thor 2, He was amazing as The Doctor, and in his other roles. So excited!
Awesome choice.
Are they building toward a Ragnarok story arc?
Don’t Norse Gods always build towards a Ragnarok story arc? ;P
Surtur (and Beta Ray Bill) in Thor 3 or bust! Yes, I need Beta Ray Bill in a movie.
However, if they want an awesome buddy picture, get Hercules in the next movie. I nominate Joe Manganiello for the role.
This is great news, Marvel replaced an excellent actor with another excellent actor, that does’nt happen often, but in this case it did. Great choice, looking forward to seeing Eccleston in the role of ‘Malekith’. “Thor : The Dark World” just went up higher on my most anticipated films list for 2013.
OMG NERDGASM
Maybe the Casket of Ancient Winters will look like a Police Box.
he was the sexist Doctor…
I believe you typoed. He was the SEXIEST Doctor.
Nobody saw it, but he was brilliant in The Shadow Line
And in ‘Shallow Grave’.
And in 28 Days Later.
I watched all of The Shadow Line. I love most British TV series. Both Eccleston and Chiwetel Eijiofor(who I secretly have a crush on) were great in The Shadow Line.
Walt Simonson comics come to life with an amazing actor as the villain? Sign me up!
Both Mads and Chris were in I am Dina together
Also get better writers. This bloke is terrible.
He was the invisible man that trained Peter. Claude I think?
Please tell me they are bringing Natalie Portman back.
Please tell me they KILL HER OFF! (Or actually give her a real script to work with). There was NO chemistry between the two of them – & over at my house, we’re convinced a LOT got chopped out & thrown on the cutting room floor. Nowhere do you SEE Thor change through his relationship with her – we only get Loki TELLING us he did. They shouldn’t insult comic book fans by treating us like we don’t want actual storylines & believable sequences.
^This. Portman almost ruined the first movie with that @$%! O. M. G.
I hope he’s a nasty piece of work like Raymond Calitri.
