EXCLUSIVE: A Knight’s Tale, the 2001 feature starring Heath Ledger, is headed to the small screen in a series adaptation written by Battlestar Galactica developer/executive producer Ron Moore. ABC has bought the project, from Sony Pictures TV, with a script commitment.
The Knight’s Tale feature was a 14th century romantic adventure set in the world of jousting to a music score of popular rock songs that centered on William Thatcher (Ledger), a peasant posing as a knight. (See the original tralier below.) The series is expected to stay close to the premise and the style of the movie — it is described as a medieval fantasy incorporating modern music and themes that follows the journey of a young man who starts out impersonating a knight of the realm and ends up
becoming one. In addition to writing, Moore is executive producing with his producing partner at Tall Ship Prods. Maril Davis as well as the film’s writer-director-producer Brian Helgeland and producer Todd Black. The title is part of the Sony library as the movie, which featured Ledger in his first lead role, was produced by Columbia Pictures. It was a worldwide box office success, turning the 22-year-old actor into a movie star.
For CAA-repped Moore, the project stems from his new overall deal with Sony TV he inked in March. At ABC, A Knight’s Tale would be a good fit for hit Once Upon A Time and other fantasy dramas the network has in development for next season, including A Kingdom Far Away from feature writer Justin Marks and di Bonaventura Television. Meanwhile, Sony TV is behind another series adaptation of a hit movie, Beverly Hills Cop, which has a pilot production commitment at CBS with Shawn Ryan writing/exec producing and Eddie Murphy exec producing and potentially recurring.

So, I reckon Moore couldn’t get The Wild, Wild West rebooted 2 Sony, then?
“A Knight’s Tale” was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Who in the hell green lighted this idea and why?
You obviously haven’t seen very many movies, then.
I do and it was pretty lame.
It wasn’t one of the worst I’ve seen, but it was pretty silly. It lost me as soon as everyone started singing along with We Will Rock You, right at the beginning. The lamest defense of the use of rock music in the movie was that classical music didn’t exist during the time for a movie like Gladiator, but they still use that in the movie. Of course, classical music is used as a score in Gladiator, not as source music, like is in A Knight’s Tale. When they all started dancing to David Bowie it was like watching an SNL skit.
Ron Moore is God.
That is all.
No, this really is telling…
The guy can’t get to series on the stuff he’s been pedaling for years so he’s selling out and doing this.
We miss the real Ron Moore — please go back to cable.
W-w-why would he go from one of the deepest, most thought-provoking television dramas to an adaption of a mediocre film???
Yeah. But to be fair, the original Battlestar Galactica was a pretty cheesy, mediocre series; Moore’s reboot took the concept and made it extremely fascinating.
AKT was only watchable because of Heath Ledger. Take away his performance and it was one of the worst films of 2001. But, hey, Moore gotta eat.
Ron Moore rocks! Hopin’ this will be as good as Battlestar!
And I thought the MR. ED reboot was a bad idea. Is today April Fool’s Day and no one bothered to tell me?
Just as long as they keep naked, drunken Chaucer as a central character…
AKT is a good idea for a series the movie was a lot of fun and anyone who doesn’t like it has a serious personality problem, it was tongue in cheek but it had a great message: anyone can “change their stars” and their destiny in life if they work hard enough. How anyone can object to that message is beyond me. Unless you are born wealthy and grow up as a spoiled brat you should love this movie. I think it’ll be a hit on TV.
Agreed. The cast included Paul Bethany & Mark Addy among others who were very good. It was a tongue-in cheek contemporary take on a Geoffery Chaucer piece.
Looks like Mr. Moore needs to pay some bills.
Can we figure on the main character actually being a time-traveller being chased by Cylon-like baddies from the future who poses as a peasant??
The fact Moore is taking it on means he has an angle to bring the concept up to his standards– the genius is in the details.
I hope that they can get Heath Ledger to reprise his role. That would be amazing.
I am amazed at how many people didn’t get this movie. Yet Heath made it better but the whole point of the rock music was that Will was ahead if his time. Furthermore, items like the brittle lances was a purposeful joke. Relax and enjoy or just don’twatch. Time will tell whether it stays on the air or not. I for one will watch.
There was a movie call The Patriot that Heath did that was a pretty big starring role for him as well. Also Ten things I hate about you.
I thought his next project was going to be Diana Gabaldons Outlanders series? Is that project that.
Regarding the movie. I loved it. It was funny and that where I first noticed Paul Bettany and Alan Tudyk. But I really hated the princess and very much preferred Laura Frasers character.
Newsflash: Moore’s remake of Larson’s BSG was poorly written, pretentious trash. The lazy “God-did-it” ending was laughable at best. That is why he’s getting a pass on all these horrible ideas of his. I bet this show won’t see light of day. What a terrible idea. The original movie was trash. Does this guy have any original thoughts, or he planning to “re-imagine” himself into oblivion. Sigh.
“BSG was poorly written, pretentious trash” John? What the hell do you consider ‘high art’ then? What standard do you want? TV is TV, and BSG was a cut above. The Ending was pure tongue in cheek to make a point. We Humans always find a way to do the worst (and never learn).
Perhaps, knave, a lesson for thee?
news flash: BSG was lame and Moore made it a thought provoking and well made series…so frak you hater
The use of modern music in the movie was to point out that music was as important to people then as it is now. It is simple a case of artistic license to convey a message. Movies sometimes make subtle points through analogy that are lost on literalists.
Robin, new BSG is just another bad remake. Call me when Ronnie boy gets an original idea or even a show that a network will actually pick up and broadcast for more than one episode. Good luck after that lemon he laid at SyFy. Btw, THE SHIELD was a) an original story and b) infinitely better written, especially the overalL story arc and ending. Take note.
