EXCLUSIVE: ABC, home of fairytale drama Once Upon A Time, has put in development another fantasy project with magical elements. A Kingdom Far Away hails from feature writer Justin Marks; ABC Studios, which is also behind Once Upon A Time; and Dan McDermott and Lorenzo di Bonaventura’s studio-based di Bonaventura Television. It is described as a fantasy adventure about a quirky family surviving together on a lawless frontier…a magical land where monsters are real, and one young woman’s unlikely destiny is about to change their lives forever. Marks, McDermott and di Bonaventura executive produce. Marks, repped by CAA, Madhouse Entertainment and Stephen Clark, wrote Syfy’s two-hour pilot Rewind.It has been a busy second development season for CAA-repped di Bonaventura TV, which has sold four projects so far: Cleopatra, written by Michael Seitzman, which has a put pilot commitment at NBC, as well as mystery thriller Patron Saints written by Jeffrey Bell, Founding Fathers written by Rich D’Ovidio and A Kingdom Far Away – all at ABC. The company’s maiden development cycle yielded a midseason series order for thriller drama Zero Hour at ABC

What I would like to understand is why would ABC buy a new fantasy show, when they already own Legend of the Seeker. The fan base for this show has proven over and over that the show can and will be profitable. The reruns curently running in other countries are getting great viewing. The DVD sales and viewing in the US at Netflix, Amazon and Hulu are on the continueal rise. So why don’t they bring back a show with a pattern of success instead of investing in something new.
ABC needs to get some production value. Once Upon A Time looks like a poorly lit K-Mart commercial. Game of Thrones has risen the bar, now you folks with more cash gotta answer.
I see your point I love GOT but HBO productions and national broadcast are different and it’s not bad to be different… it’s what make viewers pay extra bucks to get HBO in the first place.
In what world does a network show have a higher budget than an HBO show? I would guess GoT has at least two, more likely three times the budget per episode.
Also, the production values on OUaT definitely improved as the season went on, probably ABC coughing up more money when the ratings were so good.
agree! well put .. now i don’t understand why some are offended with Once Upon the time.. its entertaining, cute family oriented… compering it with GOT is ridiculous GOT although the best out there,it is not family oriented, i wouldn’t let my son or any children watch it .. GOT is a big time R rated show.. not at all what ABC is about.

yes they did raise the bar!! and hopefully HBO, STARZ, SHOWTIME,etc… continue bringing quality shows like that!!! we spend a lot on cable as it is!!! on the other hand I want ABC to continue bringing family oriented.. series

maybe you as a reporter have more insight about the real deal with the perpetual cancellation of Legend of the Seeker, and why ABC wouldn’t air it on their network after Tribune went Bankruptcy, just saying…. you would have a lots of readers if you would it write something like that
‘Seeker’ had too many nerd-followers. ABC wants hip and fresh. They don’t want nerds. Nerds sit at home and watch TV. They don’t get out and buy stuff.
Of course nerds don’t need to get out to buy stuff. They can just purchase stuff online. Which, incidentally, then gives them more time to watch said shows. Seems like the perfect type of viewers to me…
I hardly think of myself as a nerd for likeing Legend of the Seeker, after all I am a Vietnam Vet. Legend of the Seeker far out distances many other shows now on TV. We need it back…
The thing about these type of shows is that when they work, they are hard NOT to watch. I think this idea lives well on ABC, they know how to build them for a few years. and the writer is cute.

As above, why would Disney abandon Legend of the Seeker, when it was truly a monumental show. People from all around the world have shown support for it, and continually watch the episodes over and over, as I do! Please Disney if you have any sense you will bring back the greatest adventure ever, Legend of the Seeker with either a movie, or renewed show.

Legend of the Seeker was a television series loosely based on novels in the series titled The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind.
This is one of the best fantasy shows ever! For another magical, mystical, fantasy TV show, Legend of the seeker is amazing.

WOW, Patron Saints, Founding Fathers, Zero Hour, and Far Away Kingdom, have me in a state of shock considering these are ABC shows. Except for Far Away Kingdom, these are the types of badass sounding shows I would expect to land at CBS. I’m always expecting ABC to load up on shows titled, Sorority Men; Hair, Stiles & Dash; The Queens of Kings Street, TRASHDOM, etc. LOL.

Terry Gooodkind is probably a Nerd (author of the sword of truth, later adapted into a television series called The Legend Of The Seeker) who made millions of $ because people like you called him a NERD =))
Sounds like an interesting enough topic. However, after getting hooked on Legend of the Seeker, only to have it cancelled after 2 seasons, I am very reluctant to watch any new shows until they have a few seasons up their sleeves. Quality in television doesn’t seem to be a guarantee that a show gets the airtime or promotion it deserves. Especially in the sci-fi/fantasy genre. I’m waiting to see how things pan out before getting burned again.
Legend of the seeker will have a 3rd season. Lots of fans are waiting for it to happen then I will have something to watch on television. Get rid of those stupid reality shows on tv.
i dont get this either. this show sounds stupid, honestly. it’s like another version of no ordinary family, which went nowhere & then lost it’s airing too. Legend of the Seeker was a great show! reminded me of the 90s shows like Xena & Hercules. I loved those shows when i was a kid! & Legend of the Seeker just brought it all back for me, but with a much “cooler & hip” twist, as some of you on this have written. we fans are not nerds. maybe some, but not all. im certainly not. i just loved the writing, the characters, the costumes, the sets, the effects, the filming…it was all fantastic! the only reason why LOTS didnt get the required amount of viewers that ABC wanted was because ABC lacked promoting it and when it finally was on TV, it had a shitty time slot. it’s almost like ABC didnt give two shits about it in the first place, obviously since it’s putting nothing but crap on their network now. change those two things, & Legend of the Seeker will be a hit, just like Once Upon A Time. C’mon ABC! stop being greedy and use your damn brains for once! Bring back Seeker!
I agree with a lot of the comments regard Legend of the Seeker. Why boy another fantasy series when the Seeker community has shown time and time again that they want a third season and that there is money to be made. Do the right thing and bring back Seeker
I think it is a HUGE mistake, business wise, to purchase and start a new show when they already OWN the rights to the cancelled Legend of the Seeker. There is a huge fan base and would generate even more fans with a renewed season. Sales have jumped for two years straight with Legend of the Seeker DVD’s and other merchandise so just imagine if it was renewed and even more people became a fan of the show. Many viewers that watch it on Netflix, Amazon Plus, and Hulu. Legend of the Seeker is a show that needs to be brought back.
