EXCLUSIVE: In his directorial debut, Akiva Goldsman continues to add to an already strong cast for Winter’s Tale. Magic Mike and White Collar star Matt Bomer, True Blood‘s Lucy Griffiths and Eva Marie Saint round out a film that stars Colin Farrell, Downton Abbey‘s Jessica Brown Findlay, William Hurt, Will Smith and Russell Crowe. The film, based on the Mark Helprin novel, is about a dying young woman (Findlay) who falls in love with a thief who breaks into her palatial home on the West Side of Manhattan, in a drama that takes place in 19th century and contemporary Manhattan. Farrell plays the thief and Bomer will play his father while Griffiths plays his mother.

Goldsman isn’t divulging the role Saint will play, as it is a pivotal plot point. The Oscar-winning star of such films as North By Northwest, she last appeared in a major movie when she played Martha Kent in 2006′s Superman Returns. Marc Platt and Michael Tadross are producing. Warner Bros begins production in Manhattan on October 27, and Goldsman has also tapped Caleb Deschanel to do cinematography and Hans Zimmer to do the score. Sounds promising.

One of my favorite books of all time. Please do this right, Akiva.
Well, sure. If one ignores the entirety of Goldman’s work. And FYI, this is an epic wondrous novel that will never survive the Cliff Notes adaptation required to reduce it to a couple hours on screen.
How is Matt Bomer playing Colin Farrells father, he is younger than Colin?
Colin Farrell’s character is a baby when the parents are in the story.
I know Matt has White Collar and several movies to film but he really needs a starring vehicle at this point. So much talent never mind his one of a kind looks. Ridiculous he takes smaller costar roles with likes of Channing, Justin, etc. The Normal Heart should do it.
Couldn’t agree more. I love Matt, and am so tired of seeing him in these tiny movie roles. I’d like to see him in one where he has some decent amount of screen time. It’s clear from his online buzz that there are many, many fans who feel the same. C’mon Hollywood, just because he has the courage to be out, don’t keep insisting on sidelining him movie role-wise.
Fingers crossed. As a die-hard Winter’s Tale/ Helprin fan, who agrees that Helprin may be America’s
greatest novelist grudgingly placed only as “interesting” by the ubber liberal establishment
literati because of his strong conservative views, this will be at best a daunting task for
Goldsman. If his take is that the book is just a multi century love fantasy he will be wrong. The
layers of this magnificent work of genius are multiple. It’s about the triumph of genius, of
the individual, of perseverance (Peter Lake’s survival and thrust to the future) about the
rough and tumble of l9th century New York–a love letter to a city–and dozens upon dozens
of peel down of the onion leaves Helprin has created. And God help us if Goldsman tries to
inject a Hollywood leftist slant somehow. I hope Will Smith’s presence in the cast is because
he’s a solid performer and not because someone says “we need a black guy” in this movie.
Let’s put Goldsman on notice: Feet to the fire pal–make this essentially unnmakable movie
right and you’ve got life long fans. Dump it in the usual Hollywood comic book SFX
bin and we boycott and trash it on twitter and Facebook. Love your courage Akiva–remember
your namesake was a medieval rabbi of great genius–prove yourself worthy of your name.
And much, much good luck…the casting so far sounds great.
“I hope Will Smith’s presence in the cast is because he’s a solid performer and not because someone says “we need a black guy” in this movie.”
You’re joking, right?
A) Will Smith is one of the most bankable stars on the planet; B) he’s a very solid performer; C) he has worked with Goldsman on numerous films before (I, ROBOT; HANCOCK; I AM LEGEND). You really think he was cast in this film just to fulfill some kind of quota?
Bearing in mind Colin looks older than his 36 years and Matt looks younger than this 34 years, I can only assume that the make up department are going to have their work cut out.
And how is the lovely Lucy Griffiths playing his mother? Must be flashbacks.
Peter Lake is around 12, if I remember correctly, when he arrives in NYC. Before that he appears as a baby and a child so I’m assuming that’s when Bomer and Griffiths will play his mother.
I think you mean when Bomer and Griffiths will play his parents.
I haven’t heard of this book but I’m gonna see the movie JUST because of matt bomer! Yupppp.
