Amazon Studios says it sees digital comics as a great way to get audience feedback and test the viability of the project to possibly turn into a feature film. Blackburn Burrow, released today, is a supernatural tale set in a small Appalachian town in northern Georgia during the Civil War. It’s based on a feature film screenplay by writer Jay Levy. “This is a very exciting new venture for Amazon Studios. Beyond entertaining lots of comic fans, we see value in digital comics as a new way to test screenplays and learn more about fan engagement,” said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. The Blackburn Burrow digital comic book is produced by 12 Gauge Comics, along with comics writer Ron Marz (Silver Surfer, Green Lantern, Marvel Vs. DC, Batman/Aliens) and veteran illustrator Matthew Dow Smith (Doctor Who, X-Men Icons). Blackburn Burrow is available for free through a variety of sites and platforms including Graphicly, AmazonStudios.com, Amazon Studios Facebook page and the Kindle Store. The entire Blackburn Burrow comic will be released over a period of four months with new issues coming out every four weeks. Each release will be accompanied by a poll related to content in that issue that encourages readers to give feedback and provide comments.

It’s only a 10 page comic. Honestly wish they’d hire a filmmaking team and produce a 5-10 minute short for around 250K as a test instead of a comic. That would have more legs to test a real audience interest and spread throughout the internet rather than just a comic book audience via their portal.
Epic fail.
What comic did u get? Mine was 20 pages and just issue 1 of 4. So, wont that end up being 80 pages? Plus, you don’t have to use their portal – u can get it on Facebook, graphicly.com or download to Kindle on pretty much anything. I think the graphic novel format is great, tons of movies are developed that way first, anyway.
Everything about Amazon’s little film adventure is so safe, sanitized and uninteresting. God help us all if they’re experiment works.
What are they doing?! I know WME is trying to get them to get real. They’ve taken a boatload of meetings with real producers who would work with them. I’m talking big name peeps….not the likes of the guy who’s the head of their film division. They need to get a REAL film team in there and stop pretending to be a studio. Until then, it’s a clown show and they’re a joke. They should drop the “studio” off their name. Epic Failure so far!
