The country singer and the outrageous rapper have joined Randy Jackson and Mariah Carey on the judging panel for season 12. As expected for the past week, Fox made the formal announcement this morning as all four judges get set to appear at American Idol auditions in New York today. Minaj’s contract is rumored to be in the $10 million to $12 million range. Urban, who quit his gig as a judge on the Australian version of The Voice late last week, is rumored to be earning about $3 million to $5 million next season. “With an unparalleled star like Mariah, fan-favorite Randy, chart-toppers like Nicki and Keith and our incomparable host Ryan, we’ve put together one of the most exciting judging panels around,” said Mike Darnell, Fox’s President of Alternative Entertainment today. “With the exciting addition of Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj, alongside Randy Jackson, American Idol’s star power has never been so great,” added Idol creator/executive producer Simon Fuller.
The addition of Carey as an Idol judge was confirmed in late July by Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly. At the same TCA session where Carey’s judgeship was announced, Reilly said he expected long-time judge Jackson to come back to the show in some capacity. Last week, the network closed a deal with Jackson to return to Idol as a judge after negotiations with Enrique Iglesias to join the show broke off. Sources say that Jimmy Iovine is still in talks for season 12 but that the Interscope Records chairman is expected to be returning to the show in the mentor role he has held for the last two seasons. Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is also returning as is host Ryan Seacrest, who has a multi-year deal. Season 12 of American Idol debuts in January 2013.

People still will check in to see AI, but I wonder how much longer they can keep rotating the judges’ chairs? Aud. like to feel like they know the judges (look to DWTS) and feel comfortable with the judges. There was nothing wrong with Paula and Randy. Maybe a third woman would have rounded out that table….but the whole cast of judges blew up after Paula and Simon left. They had to put it back together. Now they’re blaming a drop in ratings on the “aging” rocker….granted, Steven didn’t want to be there after the 2nd season, but don’t blame it on “aging” stars. The stars are still able to bring in sell-out concert crowds and pack them into the theaters.
AI needs to go back to basics and stop looking over its shoulder at XF (which is dipping in the ratings after throwing all that money at Britney) and the voice.
Keith was fantastic as a coach on The Voice Australia. We’ll miss his insight and his musical knowledge here.
Minaj has burned thru all that Kanye cred to be exactly what she said she wasn’t — Lil’ Kim.
I, for one, am delighted that I will be able to watch Keith every week very soon! I think he is the best addition they could have made – he’s intelligent, compassionate, extremely knowledgeable about all genres of music and certainly knows what it takes to be a great entertainer.
Keith Urban will be an incredible judge with his extensive knowledge of all types of music and his wonderful personality. America will fall in love with this man.
Idol has never been about talent, Idol is about selling products to teens, the vehicle for selling the products is the (singing)contest always has been always will be. It’s just a plus if they get a star and sell music, which they seem to have done with at least four artists.
This show has been on a death spiral for some years now, but its such a huge juggernaut, the head does not know the body died some time ago.
I feel bad for the contestants who will be on this season, they will have an audience for sure, not not at any where near the levels of days gone by.
I wish them luck, but I think before the live shows even get going, it will be down to 3 judges because of the back lash of the public on one certain judge, and after all this is about selling product, and those that pay the bills will say, that judge must go, we must sell don’t ya know.
I couldn’t agree more! Nicki kills it for me! I love her music but don’t quite think that she can bring it where judging is concerned. Keith Urban, on the other hand, is a GREAT addition….just might be enough to get me watching again
I’d rather they bring back a celebrity group of past winners to judge than keep bringing in who-gives-a-Fu*ks.
Your new judges are great with the exception of the crazy one that dresses weird ,she seems to think the show revolves around her and her crazy antics ,sorry the show is about the talent of the singers ,I and several of my friends will no longer watch the show until she is replaced by a judge who is not on personal display .
I made it to the bottom six….my head was going to explode . I am out and at peace with the world
With Nicki Minaj coming back, American Idol has lost this family as viewers next year. We can’t stand her worthless commentaries, attitude, hair and about anything else you can find to discuss.
And Keith; It would be nice if he dressed with a bit more class occasionally. Maybe his wife could give him a clothing allowance.
Love to read the comments! Totally crazy! It all part of the reality tv craze! Voting and see the results! As to the judges; I like the old shows with Simon and Paula. Too bad you cannot see the full episodes anymore because they do not want to pay the royalties to the song writers. The DVDs were suppose to be sold but the royalties were too much of a gamble so they just shelved the DVDs. LOL! That business!
I for one will not watch this show again as long as this b@@ch is on it. She has to be the most annoying person I’ve ever seen on any TV show. Who the hell is she to be a judge anyway…. REALLY!!! What a waste of money. The Voice will be my show of choice.
Randy has gone stale and Nikki is a nasty untalented bore and not worth 10 cents. put Jimmy on with Miria and Keith and get rid of the unwanted ones. My last season, used to enjoy the show RIP
I WILL TELL YOU THIS MUCH IF NIKI IS JUDGE NEXT SEASON I WILL NOT WATCH IT ANYMORE AND A GREAT BIG WHOLE BUNCH OF MY FRIENDS SAID THEY WOULD NOT EITHER.PUT SOMEONE WHO IS NOT A SINGER OR WITH A BAND AND LET THEM JUDGE THE CONTESTANTS. THEY MAY NOT SING BUT THEY KNOW GOOD MUSIC AND WHEN THE VOCALS ARE GOOD OR BAD AND WHAT NEEDS WORKING ON. MY 2 YR. OLD CAN JUDGE BETTER THAN NIKI AND KIETH IS STARTING TO GET ON MY NERVES TO. JUST GET A WHOLE NEW PANEL PUT JIMMY LEVINE ON THERE HE KNOWS MORE THAN THE ORIGNAL SINGERS.SO GET WITH FINING NEW JUDGES IF YOU WANT AMI TO CONTINUE TO BE POPULAR
