BREAKING: Andrew Garfield will return to the role of Peter Parker and Marc Webb is set to direct as Columbia Pictures prepares to begin production on the next installment of The Amazing Spider-Man. Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, and Hannah Minghella, president of production for the studio, made the announcement.
The screenplay is by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner based on a previous draft by James Vanderbilt. The film will be produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. The new chapter in the Spider-Man saga is set for release in 3D on May 2, 2014. Emma Stone is also in talks to return to the blockbuster franchise and is expected to reprise her role as Gwen Stacy.
The new film will begin production in early 2013. Webb, Garfield and Stone previously teamed on this summer’s blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man, which has taken in more than $751 million worldwide. “We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new Spider-Man storyline and we are tremendously excited to be ramping up production again with Marc at the helm and Andrew continuing on as Peter Parker,” Belgrad said. “We can’t wait to share what we have in store for Peter and Spider-Man with audiences worldwide.”

Didn’t see the remake. Didn’t feel necessary.
Dude, trust me… see the movie, it is incredible! I had my doubts as well, but Andrew’s acting knocked it out of the park!
Weren’t Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone signed to multiple sequels when they took the roles originally? I know it was a question mark about the director, but I don’t know why them returning is news.
My thoughts exactly! Emma Stone is in talks to return?!? Here’s how those talks went:
“Tell Emma/Andrew that rehearsals start Feb 4th at 10AM.”
“But my client helped boost this Marvel franchise globally. I think they’re entitled to a pay-bump”
“Are either of your clients Robert Downey Jr or Hugh Jackman?”
“No.”
“See you next year.”
I also didn’t see the remake because it looked stupid. I read IGN’s review and they said it was practically the same movie as the original Raimi movie. Here’s hoping Sony wakes up and realizes nobody wants Garfield or Webb in a Spidey movie and brings back Raimi and Maguire for a 4th installment
I won’t defend ASM, which I thought was just so-so, but it’s pretty arrogant to say that just because YOU didn’t care to see it, that means that “nobody wants Garfield or Webb in a Spidey movie”. As the article says, the pic made $751 mil worldwide. $261 mil was domestic. Admittedly, that’s nowhere close to the numbers that the Raimi/Maguire movies made, which were phenomenal, but it’s still a financial success. Any studio would greenlight a sequel based on that take. Maybe you’re the one who needs to “wake up”.
It’s true that TASM did’nt do the domestic numbers the first 3 ‘Spidey’ flics did, but overseas it made more money than all of them except ‘Spider-Man 3′ believe it or not. ‘Spidey’ did 821 mill overall and ‘Spidey 2′ took in 783 mil worldwide, so TASM is in their vacinty worldwide.
Hate to break it to you champ but Maguire is way too old to play Spidey/Peter now my friend. But the original ‘Spidey’ flicks we’re great, especially the first two.
You can’t bring back people who aren’t interested in mining their past.
Hey let’s take the advice from a couple of people who didn’t even see the movie. Ha! The film wasn’t terrible but was missing something.
ya it was missing that small thing called a solid script
Yeah, when you’ve already seen the originals a bunch of times it’s hard to trot out a new one and expect it to be anything but LESS.
Still, they suckered you, boy-o.
Would rather see another Spiderman than BACHERLORETTE. I want my money back. Not a single joke in that movie that wasn’t forced. Googled the writer, and she’s a playwright with some bad reviews to complement her poorly reviewed movie. Oh well.
All feature writers have bad movies…
But keep googling buck-o!
I saw this film one time. It was just OK, but it didn’t invite a second trip (unlike Avengers). The movie seriously altered the Parker character by changing him from an unpopular geek into a semi-autistic skater who was the victim of a science conspiracy by his missing father. Garfield is far too old to portray a high-schooler.
Romantic scenes between Peter and Gwen were fantastic but the rest is like something from Spider-Man 3. Just make another movie more grounded.
They should have gotten rid of Marc Webb. Dude couldn’t handle the big third act. Even Sony admits to meddling with it. Not looking forward to the sequel.
I’m at the other end of the spectrum…I thought all of Raimi’s films, while having strong components (mostly the actors playing the villains), were mawkish, schmaltzy, over-sentimentalized twaddle. I thought the new one was much leaner, much more grounded, and just felt much more genuine. I’m glad the team is reuniting for a second one.
It’s about a guy in a spiderman suit…
anyone you cut it, it’s mawkish, schmaltzy, and twaddle.
Spiderman 1 & 2 were great, 3 was ok, and the reboot was great. So far spoderman 2 and The amazing spider-man are the best. Garfield is great
Garfield is the same age Toby was when he played spider man
Right, and that’s the whole problem. Instead of continuing on with the first series they re-cast Maguire with an actor THE SAME AGE and kept him as a high schooler!! It would’ve made more sense to keep the story going and not “RE-BOOT” it. James Bond didn’t need to “reboot” every time they changed lead actors. Absolutely dumb.
The movie was a huge success. Good reviews, good returns. Watch it.
I think anyone that is big fan of the Raimi films never has really read Spidey comics. They missed the spirit of the character entirely. Spider-man is supposed to have a sense of humor which Raimi’s films sorely lacked. That is a HUGE part of who he is.
It covers up his insecurities in fighting villains and also to keep them off guard. Peter Parker in the comics is a nice guy, but not a wimp. The way Tobey’s Peter was written and his performance suggested otherwise.
I’m not saying Amazing Spider-man is perfect. There are flaws definately. But they got a lot more right story-wise and character than they did wrong. And hopefully with little amount of studio interference and Emma Stone returning it will be The Dark Knight of the franchise. If you know the fate of Gwen’s character in the comics then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.
But who am I to talk? Movie studios outside of Marvel Studios hardly ever get the comics right and will probably screw it up anyway. I hate film executives…
Agreed MLT… Garfield was perfect as Spiderman. I liked it for his performance. The film was pretty much the other films but Garfield made it for me
“If you know the fate of Gwen’s character in the comics then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.”
yeah you practically said it. you couldnt be more spoilerish.
Loved the Raimi films, loved the new one. The script was solid, the action awesome and the love story great. Captured the classic spidey while making a believable, modern teenager out of Parker. It is possible to love the original and the new at the same time.
Sony’s never gonna give up the Spider-man rights. That would be like calling maintenance to fix an ATM in your garage that gives free cash.
I just hope they learn from their mistakes, and the next Spidey film is better than the last. At some point, somebody who cares about ____ (the characters, story structure, art, the legacy of Marvel’s greatest hero, etc.) other than cash may get to participate. Until then, it’s unrealistic to ever expect this to go away so Marvel Studios can get the rights back.
They had four films of making mistakes with Spider-Man. Give me a break.
Webb was under contract with Fox Searchlight that took priority over Spidey 2. Did Webb cut a deal with Fox to get permission to make Spidey 2?
I saw the remake, and it was unecessary. Also, for a comic book movie, there was hardly any action sequences. I’ve seen more impressive fight scenes in an episode of Downton Abbey.
Chuck MARC WEBB and bring back SAM RAIMI, TOBEY MAGUIRE & Team. The Amazing Spiderman was a big let down and had too many flaws. Sam Raimi’s version of spidey films were exceptional (yeah the 3rd one too). Those who critisized the 3rd part do not understand what film making and acting is. Tobey acted brilliantly in the 3rd part and emotional scenes were fab too.. Tobey Maguire acts from eyes, Andrew Garfield behaves like a Hyper Guy and i dont like him as a Spidey (Superhero)
just a theory.. i watched the amazing spider-man and noticed the lab rat that mutated and ate the other lab rat wasn’t killed. on a google search i found a spider-man villain in the comics was a huge rat.
