EXCLUSIVE: In a competitive situation, At Ease, a single-camera comedy from writers Josh Bycel & Jonathan Fener (ABC’s Happy Endings), Jerry Bruckheimer TV and Warner Bros. TV, has gone to NBC with a put pilot commitment. At Ease is a documentary-style comedy about the the relationships, jobs, bosses and social lives of a group of young people who happen to live and work
on an active military base in the middle of a desert country that is just coming out of a war. The project, whose setup is reminiscent of one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, M*A*S*H, is inspired by real-life experiences of retired U.S. Navy officer Dan Conley and U.S. defense contractor Aaron Hendricks, who serve as consulting producers, along with Emerson College screenwriting professor Martie Cook, who brought the idea to Bruckheimer. Bycel and Fener came on board to write via a blind script deal they had at Warner Bros. TV. The duo executive produce with Bruckheimer TV’s Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman, while KristieAnne Reed co-exec produces.
This is Bruckheimer’s third project at NBC. The company has drama pilot The Secret Lives Of Husbands And Wives casting and single-camera comedy The B-Side, from writer Sheri Elwood, in development. Comedy seems to be a big priority for drama player Bruckheimer TV this season, with its two pitches taken out far both on the half-hour side.
Bycel and Fener, who have been writing together for 14 years, worked as a writing team until Bycel left American Dad several years ago to work for the non-profit. Bycel has since served as a co-executive producer on USA’s Psych and executive producer/showrunner on the final season of Scrubs. Bycel and Fener, repped by UTA and Jared Levine, just got reunited on ABC’s Happy Endings, where Bycel serves as an executive producer and Fener as co-exec producer. Bruckheimer TV is with CAA.

Bruckheimer and/on NBC.
Priceless…
“Bruckheimer TV-Produced Military Comedy”
So big funny explosions?
These guys are my best friends.
Oh great. A show about the Bushraqistan boondoggle that bankrupted our country, got countless soldiers and civilians killed, and enriched corrupt rightwing contractors at the expense of the American taxpayer. That’s comedy gold.
Couldn’t. Agree. More.
Um, I agree this is not a great time for this comedy but Low did you miss the last for years as our current prez escalated this war to even more vastly hellish levels? I know the truth might make you feel all icky inside but…it’s the truth. To say nothing of predator drones, bombing Lybia to rubble, etc. One war monger after another…but hey what’s the fun of being POTUS if you don’t get to kill people? Oh, he did it to HELP them this time? Just like the other dude…they all say that. Gee, ya think his pal Jeff Immelt has made some (tax free!) cash on these wars? Where’s Robert Altman when you need him.
These are two of the best guys in the business. I once sat on gum and ruined my pants and Fener offered my his gym pants. I didn’t take them. Fener is the nicest guy in the world. Bycel is also a guy.
Good for them. Glad they are finally working with Bornheimer. Perfect match!
You mean Bruckheimer. It would be awesome if it had Kyle Bornheimer, but I hope Family Tools succeeds and he doesn’t seem like a military guy anyway.
These dudes are trying to unload some wide receivers for some running backs in their fantasy leagues. Just a day-in-the-life kinda fact about these two cool dudes.
They didn’t know who Jonathan Dwyer was! True story!
You mean like Woody Allen, Neil Simon, Gershwin, Marvin Hamlisch, Mel Brooks.
Do they meet your qualifications?
Comedies with *’s in their titles do well. I say they go the F*R*I*E*N*D*S route and call it F.O.R.C.E.D.-R.E.D.E.P.L.O.Y.M.E.N.T.
