EXCLUSIVE: Law & Order: SVU and ER veteran Neal Baer has teamed with feature producers James Mangold and Cathy Konrad and Reaper creators Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters for a medical drama, which has been set up at CBS. The project is based on the book Your Medical Mind by renowned physicians Jerome Groopman and Pamela Hartzband.
Inspired by their lives, the show focuses on a husband and wife – one a surgeon, one an internist – who end up working together in the same hospital. Their unique approaches to medicine — and different ways of dealing with tough ethical issues — will lead them to examine the state of their own marriage. “It’s about how they navigate their marriage now that they’re working together for the first time,” Baer said. “I’d love to see the medical world though the prism of marriage.” The project is produced by CBS TV Studios, where Baer and Fazekas & Butters are under overall deals and Mangold and Konrad serve as executive producers on the studio’s new CBS drama Vegas. Mangold and Konrad’s Treeline Film and Baer’s Baer Bones co-produce.
Mangold and Konrad, whose company has the rights to the book, brought it to CBS Studios’ head of drama Julie McNamara through their relationship on Vegas. She, in turn, reached out to Baer, who has strong medical background as a practicing pediatrician and a writer-producer who spent five years on NBC’s ER. “I loved the book,” said Baer, who had another reason to join the project — Hartzband was one of his attending physicians when he was at Harvard Medical School. Baer then brought in Fazekas and Butters who were among his key senior writer-producers on Law & Order:SVU, which he ran for 11 seasons. Baer, Fazekas and Butters will write the story together, with Fazekas and Butter penning the script. The three will executive produce with Mangold and Konrad.
This is not the first time a fictionalized version of Groopman would be the lead of a medical TV drama. ABC’s Gideon’s Crossing was loosely based on Groopman’s book The Measure Of Our Days, with the lead character played by Andre Braugher based on Groopman.
Under his overall pact with CBS TV Studios, Paradigm-repped Baer ran the studio’s supernatural medical drama A Gifted Man last season. ICM Partners-repped Fazekas and Butters have served as consulting producers on the CBS/CBS Studios drama Hawaii Five-0.

He’s an internist. She’s the Pope. They’re cops. And they’ve got just 24 hours to…
Seems CBS is determined to launch a medical franchise. At least this project has a first class team of writers and a good director attached.
Sounds solid, but I think the show needs more CBS producers.
Loser for CBS … Lifetime maybe but not network material.
Wow, CBS is going to order a medical drama series and it’s NOT from the “procedural crime drama molding machine” they’ve been working 24/7 and 365 days for the last dozen years since Lester Moonves fell in love with the ever-replicating “CSI” franchise??!!
I’m shocked that the drama development department even got permission from Lester & Nina to even develop a non-cop, medical series — though I’m sure it will be “white-dominant” leads and ensemble cast for the Caucasian Broadcasting System! ;-D
I do have to say that I absolutely LOVED what Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters created with the UPROARIOUS, albeit short-lived “Reaper” (the only show I’ve ever watch on UPN/CW!) and I’m curious why they want to transition to producing some kind of melba toast-like medical drama for CBS? Come on, this producing duo has comedic chops — they proved it EVERY week with “Reaper!” And I feel bad that debut ratings for their “Vegas” drama only looked so-so the other night! They need to stick with comedy, man!
How many EP’s before the whole project blows up before it starts?! With Jim and Cathy on board it won’t take much time. I’m more interested in the Lenkov and Diana Son concepts from the little I know at this point.
Puh-leeze. Lenkov project just a bone CBS tossed hack-ov to keep him on Crapy 5-0. Will never see the light of day
Ha! And if CBS had seen the season premiere ratings for 5-0 first, they would never even have tossed Lenkov the bone.
Yay. A new doctor show.
Get us a new lawyer show and a new New York cop show now.
Agree about Jim and Cathy. Bad news. But looks like they had to attach since they owned the rights to the book. Nonetheless, this is the medical project CBS will get behind. They want a Neal Baer show on the air and this’ll do it. Plus he’ll be free to continue developing since Fazekas and Butters will run it.
