This is a slightly more digestible trailer than the 5 1/2-minute-plus monster in July that gave us a first look at Warner Bros‘ Cloud Atlas, the fantasy drama directed by Tom Tykwer and The Matrix makers Lana and Andy Wachowski. It is playing at the Toronto Film Festival that kicks off this week and opens in the U.S. on October 26.

Looks like self-indulgent drivel. And Tom Hanks needs to think about retirement (it’s the sensible thing to do, buddy – you’re tarnishing your great career with dud after dud.)
I’m not sure you know what self indulgent actually means. Perhaps you should stick to things your brain is capable of understanding, like cartoons.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I don’t think this person knows what “self-indulgent” means.
@N and JsT: What do you guys think self indulgent means? Because the original poster used it properly and appropriately. Many films, over the years, have been described as self indulgent when the filmmakers seem to be making a film only for themselves and not for the audience. And to be honest, the trailer (and especially the 5 1/2 minute trailer) do make the film look pretty self indulgent.
Ironically, you two don’t seem to know what the word means. I would tell you to watch cartoons, but I also have too much respect for animated movies and wouldn’t want them to be equated to your level of confident stupidity.
- Jake
I take offense at that. Many animated films feature extremely mature and sophisticated storytelling techniques. I’ll take anything produced by the National Film Board of Canada over the latest $200 million disaster produced by an American studio.
He said cartoons, chill out.
Can you tell a Porsche is a piece of crap from a :30 spot? The actual movie is stunning. But impossible to convey in trailer length. Wait for the reviews.
I fear that this movie will pick up where the second and third Matrix films left off… and the voiceover driving that trailer is Exhibit A that there will be 2 1/2 hours of philosophical babble… I sure hope I’m wrong, but I’m sadly confident that I’m not…
self fulfilling prophecy, Oracle. What you call ‘philosophical babble’ sounds like an interesting discussion of unknowable aspects of humanity. like a Tree of Life or The Fountain. But these sorts of films will always divide, and I definitely want to be having a conversation with people who can unwrap some of these ‘philosophical’ ideas over people who just call it nonsense and walk away.
Tired of the snarky responses on Deadline’s Comments. The first post is a perfectly legitimate thought. Anytime I see or hear “Everything is connected” on screen I run for cover.
I loved only the first Matrix – the other two were awful, And I love Run Lola Run. So I’ll give this a try, looks interesting. Reminds me of Blade Runner in a way
I can’t wait. It looks beautiful and unique and refreshingly unlikely that I will have figured
out the entire plot by watching the first five minutes.
This looks cool. Pretty sure I won’t understand it as I still can’t explain what The Matrix 1, 2 and 3 were about… but I’m in.
Hey, go watch TRANSFORMERS all you naysayers. This looks freakin’ amazing. I know what I’m doing October 26. The first must-see film of the year!!!!
This is what Hollywood filmmaking should be all about – a great epic story told on a grand epic scale.
My apologies but I couldn’t watch this trailer all the way through.
I’m tired of time-travel mumbo jumbo and certainly know I’m repelled by Tom Hanks — doesn’t help that the beach scene looks like out-takes from Fed-Ex’s ‘Castaway’ commercial — ocassionally mixed with the nerdy Hanks character in ‘Catch Me If you Can’.
Why are people supposed to be entertained by this? It IS
self-indulgent to spend millions of dollars and thousands of crew hours to make ‘Gone with the Cloud’. Will be a nice write-down!
Wow – you can sure tell a lot from half a trailer. It actually gives me hope for film that a movie like this got made. It’s funny how people always complain about the crap Hollywood turns out and when someone makes something of actual substance people still complain. “Will be a nice write-down!” Cynical much? This project is one of the good ones. The kind of movie a lot of us dreamed of making when first got excited about this business/medium/art form. But I’ve actually seen it. What do I know?
Still don’t know what’s going on. Still looks awesome. Still gonna see it.
Considering just how good the source material is, and the level of talent involved, this looks like they hit the target square-on.
And no its not self-indulgent but rather an intelligent-looking adaptation of the one of the best and most thematically resonant books written in the 21st century.
I don’t get this shorter “more digestible trailer” version… what is this? And I really do enjoy epic smart pictures…
I usually never attend the theater because I prefer to wait and see it in my home theater, but I will support this film. It’s visually stunning and the story line resonates at a certain energy frequency that I can relate to.
This is going to be amazing.
The words self-indulgent are often thrown around by people who can’t figure out new storytelling techniques for themselves. Being forced to pay attention can actually be an enjoyable experience.
The movie may or may not be an impenetrable mess, but it’s a little early (and cynical) to assume it is a failure after only two trailers. Regardless, it’s based on a celebrated book and directed by artistically ambitious filmmakers. Most of us are movie lovers – why WOULDN’T you want this to succeed? Would you really rather have another loud blockbuster-comic book-board game inspired-sequel?
Well, these filmmakers made one good movie and four and a half bad ones. So their track record isn’t all that great. I’m curious. What new storytelling technique are they employing here? It appears to be the same technique as many have used where they take disparate storylines and show how we are all connected. Obviously, The Fountain comes to mind, but what about Altman’s films? Not Sci-Fi, but the same storytelling technique. Even Kurosawa used it to some extent in Dodeskaden. Sorry MoonDog, but you can’t come on here and try and sound smart, but say things that are not smart.
People are reacting to the trailer. Obviously, no one can react to the actual movie itself, Captain Obvious. Thanks for pointing that out. However, the trailer does make the movie look pretty self indulgent. You disagree. That’s fine. But claiming that the term “self indulgent” is used by people who can’t figure out new storytelling techniques themselves is as dumb as it is elitist. There is no new storytelling techniques being shown here to digest, except for someone like you, who appears to be pretty ignorant about storytelling and movies in general.
that shot of Halle Barry in the car is awesome!
