EXCLUSIVE: In a competitive situation, Ali In Wonderland, a comedy from Bill Lawrence, Ali Wentworth and Liz Tuccillo, has landed at NBC with a put pilot commitment. Based on Wentworth’s memoir published earlier this year, the single-camera project is described as part fish-out-of-water, part love story
about an impulsive, smart-mouthed young woman who is forced to move back to Washington, D.C. — and her domineering mother — for her husband’s new high-powered job. Comedic actress-writer Wentworth and Sex And The City alumna Tuccillo will co-write the script, with Lawrence supervising. Warner Bros TV is producing with Lawrence’s studio-based Doozer banner. Lawrence, Wentworth, Tuccillo and Doozer’s Jeff Ingold will executive produce.
Wentworth’s memoir chronicles her life from her childhood among Washington’s elite (she grew up in a family of political journalists and is the daughter of President Reagan’s White House social secretary) to her rebellious days in Los Angeles doing sketch comedy and going through a series of spectacularly failed loves. (Watch Wentworth’s book’s trailer below.) She ultimately settled down, marrying ABC News star George Stephanopoulos, with whom she has two daughters.
Lawrence, who is friends with Wentworth and Stephanopoulos, got Warner Bros TV to acquire the rights to the book and brought in Tuccillo to co-write. This marks the second big sale for ICM Partners-repped Doozer this season. In another case of heated bidding, the company landed a pilot production commitment at Fox for I Suck At Girls, also a single-camera comedy based on an autobiographical book.

Liz Tuccillo is insanely cool and funny. She’s also smart as hell. I’m pumped for this.
Another “put pilot” for Bill Lawrence. Can’t wait to never see this one either.
Hoping to see a Bill Lawrence comment on this article soon. Love when he does that. Huge fans of both Bill Lawrence and Ali Wentworth. Can’t wait until her Cougar Town episode (favorite show) airs. Read this book and very interested to see it turned into a TV show.
Good for Bill. He’s a talented writer, and it’ll be good to have another show of his on the air.
That said, I cannot understand why the networks are so hell bent on committing to projects based on books. Was “Big Bang Theory” or “Modern Family” based on books? How bout “Mad Men” or “Breaking Bad”?
Congrats to Bill for playing the game well. But there are lots of terrific TV writers who don’t need a book to develop a fantastic and hugely successful show.
“rebellious days in Los Angeles, doing sketch comedy”
wow, what a rebel!
Ali Wentworth has never been funny. Bill Lawrence, I’m not familiar with that name.
Because this worked out awesome with Chelsea Handler last year, right?
I actually find Bill to be quite charming and witty in person. Not sure why his shows have gotten progressively worse as he continues on his career.
Yawn, great snark. I will steal that line. Ieven your screen name (“Yawn”) makes you seem so above it all that I wish we could be friends forever, this was a funny book. Read it before I ruin it. (or not – Liz is very talented and makes up for my shows getting “worse and worse”. Cheers – keep living in a fun, anonymous, Internet world where words don’t hurt. One single tear…
I feel you are acknowledging your hurt by continuing with posts that say it doesnt hurt you. bottom line is that you are no longer funny.
bill, your talent is gone. you are rich. please retire for the betterment of the earth.
Thanks, for the insight, Anonymous!! I will consider it. For the earth.
For someone who doesn’t care you seem to care. Make a movie, take a risk, you’re loaded, stop wasting time on network tv.
I like tv! Movies are the worst biz on earth.
OK, you like TV but why make millions of people suffer as a result?
Love your work and loved Wentworth’s manic craziness in Head Cases. Good luck, thanks for all the laughs, and fuck anon, stick with tv.
Bill has been reduced to adapting other peoples books into sitcoms…yikes that’s 2 this year. Out of ideas I guess. How about trying a movie…show some balls dude.
Im not adapting or writing either one. The authors of both books (which I liked) are writing the scripts. I like that they get to do this. I wonder if they’re people I also like!? Sorry about the “no balls”. Yikes!
Ok, you have 1 ball…clearly i’m just jealous. A movie would be a nice change of pace though…how about “Scrubs vs. Frankenstein”.
he tried to write a sequel to fletch. read it if you want to feel pain.
Anonymous, did your father lock you in a closet and deprive you of love? Get over it, Bill isn’t your daddy.
I know you are in pain, I beg you to get some therapy. If that doesn’t work try large amounts of alcohol(or weed).
Scrubs is the greatest show that’s ever been on television. The shows people flock to today use animation to copy the same cutaway style that Scrubs pulled off with cameras. Scrubs was real and wrenching and poignant at the perfect times. Keep it up, Bill.
Greatest show ever Hunter, is that your name or just what you do for kicks? Scrubs was a good show that had some great episodes but lets no go overboard.
Bill seems like an ok dude. With $200mil in the bank he can chill for awhile.
have you lost your mind?!?
Why should Bill do movies? Whats’s wrong with TV? Scrubs and Cougar Town demonstrate the talent that he has got. So why would he just stop and retire instead of continuing to make great shows in the same vein as his other shows.
Leave Bill’s “vein” out of this you &*^&(inappropriate gay slur).
I think he’ll do whatever the f%^* he wants regardless of what the intellectuals say on this post.
Love Ali’s book! She’ll be giving away signed copies tonight! Come to Macy’s in NYC’s Herald Square to watch a live taping of her web show! food and beverage provided.
I have never met anyone named Kiki. Maybe I’ll check out Ali’s book since Kiki has endorsed it. Thanks Kiki! I hope Ali is paying you well.
The funniest thing about this is that Ali Wentworth wrote her memoirs… were people clamoring for this?!?!
