Steven W. Kiger has sued Langley Productions, alleging he was wrongfully fired from the Fox reality show because he was over 40 and made too much money. Kiger claims in the Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit (read it here) that he was an exemplary employee who had worked for the Cops producer for 22 years. The 57-year-old Kiger says he was fired in the fall of 2010 because Langley “had adopted an illegal policy of ridding itself of older workers in favor of younger workers”. In the suit Kiger refers to an email written by a Langley executive which read: “We look for young guys who are hungry, who will work for less $$”. Kiger was making $95,000 a year plus performance bonuses, according to the lawsuit. Kiger is seeking unspecified damages.

If the charges are true, I hope this guy wins. This issue will only get worse. At this point, most people will have to work way later in life. A show like cops has been in syndication so long and on so many channels, $95K per year is nothing for a producer.
That’s just outrageous. $95,000 a year for an old fart over the age of 30? I could see it, maybe, if he were working in Beverly Hills as a nanny, but let’s get real. For that kind of money, a production company can hire two young blondes and get twice as many thighs to go around. One should always remember the Hollywood motto, “Once you go gray, you ain’t gettin’ no pay.”
As a “young blonde” who works BEHIND the camera. Your everything that is wrong with this town. Entitled, arrogant and classless. How can you make a comment like that and think it is amusing. This is an article about someones life and their finances. It’s hard enough being young and female in this town and getting ZERO respect without people like you!
Actually, I meant to say, “perky blonde,” like you meant to say, “you’re” and not “your.” Remember, nobody is forcing you to be young and female in this town. You could be young and female just about anywhere.
It is one thing if an employer is downsizing his work force overall. In the current economy, that is happening. It is another thing if an employer is replacing older employees with good work records with younger ones. It is a shame that Hollywood who seems to jump on every discrimination bandwagon does not more aggressively support older workers in front of and behind the camera.
DISCRIMINATION IN THE INDUSTRY MUST END!!! FIGHT ON!!!! (Note: All the Emmy Winners this year were WHITE.)
I love how the suit was because he was over 40. the dude is 57. they’ve had 17 years to fire him because he was over 40.
Agendas change. It doesn’t matter how long an employer delays discrimination, it is still illegal. The lawsuit alleges the following email text: “We look for young guys who are hungry, who will work for less $$.” The key phrases are “young guys,” and “less $$.” I anticipate they will be cutting this man a check.
I’ve worked for Langley and I know firsthand that he is an asshole who treats employees poorly. Even his wife is divorcing him. The success of COPS comes from the talented people he hired and they deserve better!
