EXCLUSIVE: Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have set up the first project through the first-look deal they signed with Universal TV and NBCUni’s international TV production division in July. NBC has bought an hourlong drama from the duo and former General Hospital head writer Sri Rao. Tentatively titled White House Confidential, the project is described as an upstairs-downstairs-type soap set in the White House, told from the point of view of a young female doctor who has a secret from her past.
It’s been a busy last two months for Zadan and Meron, who inked the NBCUni deal for series and specials, signed on to produce a live Sound Of Music TV special for NBC, and renewed their long-form deal at Sony TV, putting several more TV movies in the works including biopics of Anna Nicole Smith and Warren Jeffs at Lifetime and a Bonnie & Clyde miniseries at History. Last month, the duo were named producers of the upcoming 2013 Academy Awards. Zadan and Meron executive produce series Smash, Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva and the cable network’s upcoming Steel Magnolias remake.

It seems like half the shows bought these days are:
A soap set in (Interesting Place) told from the POV of (take your pick) with a secret from his/her past.
Please, keep the title” White House Confidential”. It is perfect for NBC.
So… They’re remaking Backstairs At The White House.
This does not bode well for NBC’s 1600 Penn. Definitely shows a lack of confidence in it.
In what way? One is an hour long drama and the other is a half hour comedy. If this show were being picked up as a comedy I would say it shows a lack of confidence but it isn’t so it doesn’t.
There was this same sort of discussion a couple of years back over at NBC, where they put on two shows that felt rather similar, one a half-hour sitcom and one an hour-long drama version of the same idea.
“30 Rock” vs. “Studio 60.”
Yeah, that worked out well … for “30 Rock.”
If there’s one world that people are weary and burned out on, it has to be politics. Seems like a very questionable choice to me, but I wish them luck –
