EXCLUSIVE: An irreverent multi-generational comedy from Robb and Mark Cullen sparked a bidding war among multiple networks. It has just landed at the network that boasts the top family comedy on the air right now, ABC. Like Modern Family, the new single-camera project, titled Safe At Home, hails from 20th Century Fox TV.
Safe At Home centers on a strong-willed, divorced, single mother who has to move back home with her salty, former career-minor-league-baseball-playing widower father and raise her son while navigating her new community and situation as she coaches her son’s little league team. In addition to writing, the Cullen brothers are executive producing with Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment.
Mark and Robb Cullen created the praised FX comedy series Lucky as well as the Fox drama Heist. The duo has been focused on features for the past couple of years and wrote the 2010 action comedy Cop Out. This marks Kapital Entertainment’s second pilot production commitment this season. The other one came from NBC for another 20th TV-produced comedy, the Cathy Yuspa-Josh Goldsmith pilot The Gates, based on a British format.

Damn! Kaplan is killing it again. Dude’s a machine!
Well irreverent is good but it better be edgy if it’s not edgy nobody will watch it.
I love everyone involved.
The Cullens are hilarious and great guys.
This sounds great.
Robb Cullen is an incredible human being! Him and Mark are a creative force of funny! They hold there own with the likes of Billy Gardell, Craig Robinson and Tracy Morgan!!! Bullies? Shut up and quit being so sensitive!!
Are you kidding me? Those guys are…well I can’t say it or this won’t get published. I had the unfortunate experience of working with them and let’s put it this way…they are not nice people, they are bullies, they hate women and only THEY think they are funny! AK on the other hand is a pleasure to work with and is on a roll!
“Has to move back home”… Why do pilot projects never stop utilizing this maddeningly tired premise? … P.S. — I can attest to the brothers’ reputations of which Only in Hollywood speaks.
The Cullen brothers: the most unpleasant people I’ve ever been in a room with (and I’ve been in the background of a lot of rooms). Total misogynists, generally unpleasant in conversation, and unbelievably sleazy. Seen others get away with this at an agency because of their talent, but these guys… not sure what their excuse is. Hollywood sucks sometimes.
Mark and Robb Cullen are horrible writers and even more horrible people. this was ONLY picked up because of Kaplan. they totally suck, guaranteed this pilot won’t air.
Kaplan vs. Dixon? Well WMA(E), who’d you rather?
“A Couple of Dicks” was a great script! Cop Out the movie, not so much. But these guys are genuinely funny. Glad they’re back in TV. “Lucky” was one of the best shows ever made!
“they are not nice people, they are bullies, they hate women and only THEY think they are funny!” – So what you’re saying is that they’re normal.
I too can speak about the Cullens behavior. They didn’t suffer fools well. But they were fair and generous. This is all a while ago. They haven’t run a show in a while. Generally they were not bad to work for unless you were incompetent. Then they didn’t treat you well.
Anyone saying Aaron Kaplan is a great guy has never worked with him. He is NOT a great guy. He hates women and writers and has negotiated against his own clients, when it served his interests, on several occasions.
The Cullens are great guys, respectful to women. They’re very talented. I’m glad they’re back in TV.
Have worked with the Cullen’s and as I woman, I thought they were confident, not arrogant…by industry standards…and really smart.
You know you’re already in trouble when someone in your pilot has to “navigate” something.
These two hacks, AGAIN!
When will Hollywood stop buying scripts from the Cullen Brothers. They wouldn’t know funny if it punched them in the face. They’ve been given so many chances to fail that just by random luck they should accidentally write a decent script. Still waiting…
I worked with the Cullen boys on Heist for NBC. Funniest, nicest guys I have ever met. There father was hysterical as well, though I’ve heard he’s passed. My condolences. As for the folks above who are taking shots at them, that’s Hollywood jealousy I suppose and to be expected. I doubt any of them ever worked with the brothers. As a woman, I was always treated with kindness and respect and I’ve never had more fun than on one of their sets. Congrats, brothers!
Never worked with them but know them and they don’t hate women. If you ever saw Mark with his wife, he absolutely adores her. Robb does not hate women either. LOL. I wish them both great success on this new show.
As a DP I found the Cullen Brothers both collaborative and and creative. They were driven to get what they believed was right, while taking constructive criticism. Good Luck Brothers!!
