Embrace, Jessica Shirvington’s recently published opening novel in a young-adult book series hailed as a potential successor to Twilight, is headed to television. The CW has teamed with Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Television to adapt the book as a drama series eyed for next season.
Spielberg is reverting to the Amblin TV moniker he once used on ER. Since the 1994 launch of DreamWorks, his TV series had been produced under the DreamWorks TV banner. Now some existing series, like Smash and Falling Skies, will remain DreamWorks TV-branded, while others, like Borgias,
Americans and Embrace, will be under the Amblin TV banner.
Bill Laurin and Glenn Davis will write Embrace, described as being in the vein of Buffy and The Vampire Diaries. It centers on twentysomething Violet Eden, who discovers that she is half-angel and the key to a centuries-old war between fallen angels and their earthly protectors. Laurin and Davis will executive produce alongside DreamWorksTV/Amblin TV co-co-presidents Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank.
I hear that CW and its topper Mark Pedowitz and Frank and Falvey simultaneously were chasing TV rights to the book before teaming to do the project together. The producers met with a handful of potential writers, and Laurin and Davis’ take landed them the job. Amblin will produce with CBS TV Studios.

This sounds interesting.
buffy and vampire diaries could not be more different. one is a clever comedy/drama with heavy metaphor, the other is a dark soap, in the twilight mold. both are good, IMHO, but i don’t see how something can be “in the vein” of both these shows.
People who didn’t watch either can think they are in the same vein because they wrongly believe they appeal to mostly girls and have supernatural stuff. It’s like the people who market Grimm at Comicon thinking it’s the rightaudience, when Grimm is actually more a Law & Order or CSI audience. Or the same people that shove wrestling on Syfy channel. You get statements like that when you have people programming shows that they themselves don’t watch and secretly dislike.
Grimm is for the Law & Order and CSI audience? God, that is one of the dumber things I have read around here in a while, and that is saying something.
Then you clearly haven’t watched MTV’s Teen Wolf.
Teen Wolf is more Buffy style than it is Vampire Diaries (and that is SUCH a good thing!).
It reminds me of Dawn (being “The Key”) and Elena (being the Doppelganger). So, I can see the resemblance.
Coincidently this premise(Which I LOVE) Seems a little bit similar to the 3 part mini series that ABC Family did with Paul Wesley which i also LOVED. Interesting to see this female version. GO CW!!!
Fallen! Yes, that’s exactly what I thought too
Particularly since it’s not about vampires.
The book is really good! What a catch CW!
You know it’s bad out there when even Spielberg is dragging out tired ideas like this for series…
The CW should add more shows like this to the schedule. They seem to do really well with Sci fi series. Good luck to them. I’ll definitely be checking it out.
Then why always male writer to interpret a female driven book series . Shame on you Amblin. You just lost points on my chart. I guess it goes with firing the female writer creator of SMASH instead of nurturing her talent. Just give it to the guys. Too sad.
If you’re looking for a female voice, I wouldn’t suggest looking to the CW, honey.
What an idiotic statement.
Ummm, really? The Vampire Diaries — female co-creator/showrunner. Emily Owens, M.D. — female creator/showrunner. Beauty & The Beast — female duo co-creators/showrunners. The Carrie Diaries — female creator/showrunner. 90210 — female showrunners. Gossip Girl — female co-creator/showrunner. Hart Of Dixie — female creator/showrunner.
They should have optioned The Fallen series by Thomas Sniegoski, same premise half angel-half human but with a male lead…
Fallen had it’s own ABC Family miniseries in 2006 you should check it out.
I read these books and loved ‘em! I think it holds the dramatic and romantic tone of Vampire Diaries with the kickbutt girl angle and mythology of Buffy. Am so excited to see how the CW will bring this to life!
I’m sorry but the TVEC did not just get compared to Twilight. They’re two completely different things and I’m not even going to begin on talking about the differences.
As for it being the new Buffy/TVD… Buffy was a great show during it’s time and TVD is a great show now. But TVEC are about fallen angels not vampires. I guess the themes are similar and it’s all paranormal but that’s where the similarities end.
I just hope they follow the plot closely and cast characters that are similar to the book descriptions… but judging from the fact that she is now twenty-something rather than 16/17 I guess that’s a no.
Great series, so hopefully it is done right. The CW’s track record is pretty good when it comes to these (with the big exception of Secret Circle), so the odds are in our favor.
The Secret Circle actually turned out to be very good though! And the changes they made compared to the book were acceptable.
So you give a sexist response/reaction to what perceive as sexism. Ah the epitome of hypocrisy. Judge the writers on their gender and assume the studio did as well. Shame on you.
In regards to ‘Smash’ the creator is still the creator but show an inability to also be a show runner. Why should hundreds of people’s job be put at risk as someone else is performing of her depth? Oh, right, because you want women to be treated differently and have them ‘nurtured’.
Sorry, it’s 2012. Do your job no matter your gender.
No…really? Another show based on a book series about a young girl involved in the supernatural who’s torn by love and having to deal with everyday life. Well as long as ths will be something new and original, that’s what counts!
i love this book, but dont know if it would be as good as a tv drama
This is an amazing book series,it would be great as a TV series aswell but Violet is NOT twenty-something, that defeats the whole story on how she finds out that she’s half angel, she doesn’t just stumble upon it one day, it has to do with her age.
Really hope they do this series justice.
They really had better not mess up this series! As soon as pre-production is finished…and auditions open…
Anyway, I am really enjoying the books, and do you really think that they are going to take 6 seasons once all teh books are finished?
SOOO excited for this, I will tune in everytime
Okay violet is not twenty something!! The whole point was for her to be 17. Stick to the book people! Second i think i would love for this series to be turned into movies instead. Tv drama is okay but i have a gut wrenching feeling that CW will screw up this series for me. Anyway cant wait until book five!
No!!!! Violet is not 20 she is 17!!!! That changes and ruins the whole story!!!!! Grigori find out about their destiny when they are 17 not twenty something
this is such a great book and I really hope they don’t make a mess of the tv show!!
I want joss whendon and steven speilburg to produce this show. if the cw get that going this will be the best show on tv
