EXCLUSIVE: The CW is jumping down a rabbit hole to Wunderland, putting in development a contemporary reimagining of Alice In Wonderland. Fittingly, Wunderland hails from McG‘s Warner Bros TV-based production company Wonderland Sound And Vision, in association with WBTV. Written by The Playboy Club creator Chad Hodge, the drama project centers on a young female detective in present-day Los Angeles who discovers another world that exists under the surface of this ultra-modern city. Hodge will write the script and executive produce with McG and Wonderland’s Peter Johnson. This is one of two public domain properties the CW is developing as potential drama series for next season, along with Sleepy Hollow, which also is being produced by WBTV. Lewis Carroll’s classic has been closely associated with Disney via the 1951 animated film and Tim Burton’s 2010 extravaganza. Characters from the book also have been featured on Disney-owned ABC’s fairytale drama Once Upon A Time.

With its premise — a female cop procedural with fantasy elements – Wunderland is reminiscent of the CW’s new fall drama Beauty And The Beast, a reboot of the 1980s series. The new project reunites Hodge with the CW, where he created and executive produced drama Runaway. In addition to Wunderland, Hodge is writing/exec producing a light drama at NBC executive produced by country star Miranda Lambert, which is inspired by her childhood and centers on a couple who run a detective agency while also trying to raise two teenagers. For Wonderland, this is the second project in the works for next season based on a classic story — the company has a put pilot commitment at ABC for Westside, a Byron Balasco-written soap that is described as a contemporary take on West Side Story. Hodge and McG are with WME.

I think McG can really make this project a special one. They guy has cajones for taking risks that are sometimes unpopular but he has proven time and again that his instinct leads him in the right direction. I think this is going to be a great match.
Apparently, he has a really hardworking PR team, too.
By “cajones”, you should mean “cojones” which means balls, then yes. He does. However, sounds crappy. Stupid female-centric CW
Yes, his instinct lead to the modern classics Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Termination Salvation, This Means War, Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious and Human Target. The only smart thing he’s done is manage to spin directing a fail-proof movie like Charlie’s Angels into a career.
Another remake no one asked for.
Every time another public domain piece is sold, God punishes Los Angeles by making the temperature jump above 90.
And it has been a long, hot summer.
Bees, that was hilariously true. But shouldn’t He punish the executives who are buying this? c’mon God. Where is the rain?! Don’t make us all suffer!
It’s official, boys! They’re asleep at the wheel!
Whoo hoo!
Get in there and rustle up a pitch while ya can!
LOL
I was just going to write about how this show sounds exactly like the new Beauty and the Beast, but Nellie beat me to it. So the CW already has plans for when BatB bombs and gets yanked mid-season. Even they can see the writing on the wall. Which begs the question of why they let BatB get beyond the horrible pilot in the first place.
Of course Hollywood is only going to come up with remake after remake and sequel after sequel. Unless it has a built in audience they seem to think it’s too risky. Look at the 10 ten grossing movies this year so far. Only 2 are original and not sequels, remakes or based on a book or graphic novels. 2 without a direct built in audience. If people want more original movies and tv shows people need to stop spending money on the remakes, sequels and based-on products.
Are people supposed to take The CW seriously? Did I actually need to ask that question?
Another take on Alice in Wonderland? Because that’s done so well for… practically no one since Disney…
As someone in the CW’s target audience, I find it baffling that they develop these cop/lawyer/unqualifed-detective procedurals (Cult, Beauty & the Beast, etc) by adding some “girly” or fantasy slant to them. You know what I find relatable and entertaining about that? Nothing.
Guess I’ll have to make do with MTV’s Awkward., though Carrie Diaries is surprisingly the most honest and refreshing thing they’ve done in awhile (despite the fact that I’m so tired of female protagonists aspiring to work in fashion; some of us dream of other things, I swear).
I just wish they would focus on fresh, unique voices that speak to my generation, instead of tired fairy tales, sleuthing, and gimmicks. We see right through it. RIP Greek.
Another GRIMM and ONCE UPON TIME type series?, no thanks CW, last year you got a really good pilot in , I urge that you to make that into a series rather then waste your time with this silly pilot.
But don’t you all understand? This version will be different! She’s going to fall in love with a gay vampire!
Didn’t they already make this TV show, oh yeah , it is called Grimm
No pilot announcements make me laugh more than the CW’s. These are the people who also greenlit “Cooper & Stone,” a pilot in which the head homicide detectives on Chicago’s gritty northside were super sexy 20-somethings who talk fashion and boys while solving crime. Un-effing-believable. Thanks for the unintentional comedy, C-Dub!
Oh, come on, you guys! It’s not a remake; it’s a “reimagining”.
Seriously, this could be fun:
Jenni Garth as the Queen of Hearts
Selena Gomez as the Cheshire Cat
T.I. as the White Rabbit
Cam Gigandet as the Mad Hatter
Kirstie Alley as the the Caterpillar
Chris Colfer as the Duchess
Jackson Rathbone as the March Hare
Taylor Kitsch as the Knave of Hearts
Booboo Stewart as the Dormouse
and Justin Bieber as Alice
This sounds like the failed ABC pilot titled ‘Gotham.’ I would have rather seen that one.
THE CW: We rape & pillage everything!
hehe perhaps they should just look at Syfy’s miniseries alice and turn That into a tv show instead of this? ;3 that at least is totally awesome sooo
I have this idea!! The show is called “Poppins” and it’s a fantasy procedural about this time and space traveling nanny who travels around solving crimes committed against children. Think “Doctor Who” meets “Law & Order: SVU” meets “Grimm.”
No, wait, wait. Here’s another one. It’s called “Ariel” and it’s a….yeah, fantasy procedural about this mute girl who helps solve and prevent environmental crime againsts, because she used to be a mermaid, all while trying to win the heart of her ruggedly handsome lawyer boss. Think “Castle” meets “Children of a Lesser God” meets, um, “Grimm.”
Or, wait! “Aurora” is a–get this–fantasy procedural about this chick who is in a coma but this handsome psychic realizes he can enter her dreams and together they can find clues and then he solves crimes in the real world. And they have fantastical dream sequences…in the dreams. All while also solving the mystery of who caused her to be in the coma on her 16th birthday. Think “The Mentalist” meets “Moulin Rouge” meets “Grimm.”
Damn, this is easy.
Stefan, please let me have your details so I can send you a very large check! Just kidding! Really! But keep those ideas coming and get yourself a producer, writer, agent etc. because I’d rather watch any one of those three than much of the bilge that is getting made these days.
Somewhere out there an executive is cackling and madly scribbling down every word you just typed. I suggest you hurry and get a copyright.
Woah! The CW is buying every pilot that dares to pass by it! Unless they are planning to open up the 10PM slots and/or Sundays, this really makes no sense. So far the count is at 9! I think it’s the highest number of pilots put in development by the CW, and it’s just September!!! So far we have – Sleepy Hollow, Boiling Point, Wrecking Ball, Amazon, Copeland prep, Battle Royale, Embrace, The Selection (re-developing) and now Wunderland. Also why so many Sci-Fi’s?…
Mark Pedowitz says he want more from Sarah Michelle Gellar on the channel so this looks like a a vehicle for her to come back to CW.
If they do a good job the series possibly will be a hit!
Not only is this not an original idea, Warners Television has actually managed to steal from itself. Public Domain notwithstanding, it is the same premise!
They shot the pilot “Chasing Alice” in 2003, for the Network Formerly Known As WB.

I’m certain both Lewis Carroll and Scott Lobdell are both rolling in their graves.
Not a huge fan of the CW, but this actually sounds like it could be fun. And ditto the above comment, this does sound a bit like GOTHAM (which I would’ve loved to have seen).
It sounds exactly like CW’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Will you be watching that too? Didn’t think so.
