It looks like Treme co-creator David Simon will get his wish to finish the series in four seasons… almost. At a screening for Treme production staff tonight in New Orleans on the eve of the show’s third season premiere on Sunday, Simon announced that the New Orleans drama will conclude its run with an abbreviated fourth season. “We are going to be back for a season 3.5,” Simon said, according to Nola.com. “HBO, upon viewing the 10 (episodes from Season 3) that we gave them and what we’ve done, they want to see the end of the story. They fought very hard to give us half a loaf. We’re going to take it and run.” Reps for HBO confirmed that Simon made the statements, declining further comment.
Simon’s announcement comes amidst speculation that HBO brass had been mulling an end for Treme, which has never been a commercial success. The series created by Simon and Eric Overmyer premiered to 1.1 million viewers, dropping to 605,000 viewers in its second season opener. Despite the low ratings, the series that chronicles the life of New Orleans residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has been a matter of pride for HBO leadership.

This is probably one of my favorite shows on TV at the moment, and while I’d love to see a full fourth season, or even a fifth and beyond, something more than the third being the last one makes me happy.
I do find it slightly odd that they were so reluctant to give them a fourth season though. Every year this show has come on HBO has picked it up for another season with in the first two or three episodes. It was always very sudden and made me think that HBO was very happy with where it was. Although that just may have been me being very optimistic.
I don’t really understand this.
They gave a chance to David Simon when they wanted to cancel The Wire which had even worse ratings than Treme. The Wire is now one of the most acclaimed shows of all time, one of the shows HBO is most known for (along with The Sopranos, Sex and the City) and must have made its money back ten times in DVD sales and they want to cancel Treme ? The show from the same writers in the exact same situation five years later ? Really ??
Amazing show. This and Breaking Bad are my favorites on the air right now. I’m sad to hear that season 4 won’t be 10 episodes but its better than nothing.
good show. But no one could follow THE WIRE. It’s like following behind ALI or ELWAY… you can’t.
“A matter of pride for HBO leadership”.
Not bad as an ethics statement but half season (3.5) sounds like a consolation prize. I love the show and I feel proud of it. ‘Treme’ is full of humanity and great screenwriting. I just hope Mr. Simon will comeback with another brilliant concept in the near future.
Great news. I think HBO has been more than fair to Simon and fans of Treme. An abbreviated season is better than none at all. Also, congratulations to everyone involved from the cast to the crew. Can’t wait.
I wonder if this means literally 5 episodes or whether there could be more or less.
Who did HBO have to ‘fight’with exactly to procure the loaf-half for Simon? Clearly this should have been a mini like The Corner.
Three seasons too many. A show about nothing, without being funny.
Guess nobody told you Treme’s not a comedy.
It really is pretty funny, fairly often, though…
He was making a reference to Seinfeld. And he’s right – treme is absolutely unwatchable. There’s not a single likeable character. every one of them is a complete mope. and the ‘plot’ is all over the map. Plus the unending gratuitous cliches – like everyone always drinking Abita turbo dogs or putting hot sauce on everything – are idiotic and insulting to the city. Even if only for the Steve Zahn character it would be one of the worst shows in hbo’s existence. The sooner it dies, the better. David Simon should just do a documentary on new Orleans’ music scene.
HBO is probably waiting until the day after the premiere to confirm the renewal. That seems to be their usual MO.
Treme has been the best show on HBO since it first aired 3 years ago. It’s a show for intelligent adults with taste. HBO has sunk into making shows for teens and morons like TRUE BLOOD and Game Of Thrones.
In my book Treme is one of the 3 best dramas currently running…along with Breaking Bad and Southland.
Strongly agree with your feelings on the quality of Breaking Bad and Treme, but Game of Thrones is not a show for morons.
Why in the heck did this show not get better ratings? I would love to inquire why the folks in NOLA, East Texas?, W.Miss? did not follow this show enough to get it renewed and renewed> What was missing? I love this show so much, the actors, the MUSIC especially and the subject of the story, New Orleans…which really deserves it’s own storyline, what a a fabulous city!!!
WTH happened??
Show about nothing? Right, our nation’s worst natural disaster, a great city healing, police and political corruption, great music and history, nothing sounds pretty good.
The story line has become stale and repetitive. The development of the individual characters is wanting. Frankly, the majority of the country particularly soutnerners are over stories about New Orleans corruption, crime and Katrina. There are also political themes that are obvious and inaccurate. For those of us who have visited NO on business, left or have otherwise spent considerable time in the city it’s mythology is severly over played. It is a dirty, crime ridden city where work ehtic is a passe concept and generational dependency is the norm.
Really? Have you been paying attention? All the main characters have advanced from when the show started. Are you from the South because you don’t sound like anyone I know? Most of us in the South want New Orleans to be what it was, a city with great music, food and culture. It is one of our country’s treasures that can’t be replaced. I also find it hard to believe you traveled there on business because I can’t believe a company would spend so much money on someone so illiterate.
Treme is one of my favorite shows on HBO right now. I don’t like Game of Thrones but for those that do, I hope it doesn’t get cancelled anytime soon. It seems the best shows get cancelled.
