Vice and Fuse made big gains — and Tasted cooked up strong results — in the week that ended September 12, according to our latest tally of Google-funded YouTube channels. Vice gained 3.2M views, for a total of 5.4M, helped by a video about Tardigrades — microscopic animals that were the first to survive the vacuum conditions of space. And Fuse had 1.9M more views than the previous week, for a total of 3.9M, based in part on Insane Clown Posse’s Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope riffing on Carly Rae Jepsen’s video for her tune “Call Me Maybe”. We had trouble securing numbers for Tasted last week, and we were off the previous two weeks. But the channel came in this week at No. 44 with 323,997 views, far higher than we’ve seen since May when we started monitoring YouTube channels. For the entire chart, total views this week were -5.4% to 78.2M; the top 10 channels accounted for nearly 53%. Fuse joined the top 10 (+10 spots to No. 3) as did Mondo Media (+6 spots to No. 10), as Redbull slipped 2 spots to No. 11 and Awesomeness TV fell 6 spots to No. 12.
After Vice and Fuse, top gainers by views were: Mondo Media (+656,213 to 2.2M), Clevver News (+568,620 to 3.1M), THNKR (+487,337 to 905,361, Sci Show (+370,253 to 924,019), and WSJ Digital Network (+369,884 to 1.2M). Those with the biggest gains in rank were: Comedy Shaq (+39 to No. 42), THNKR (+17 to No. 23), Wigs (+16 to No. 46), H+ Digital Series (+15 to No. 30), and Reserve (+13 to No. 69). Channels that declined most in views: Motor Trend (-4.6M to 3.4M), Sourcefed (-1.7M to 3.2M), Nuevon (-1.4M to 3.2M), WWE Fan Nation (-1.1M to 2.8M), AwesomenessTV (-992,374 to 2M). And those falling most in rank: CafeMom Studios (-28 to No. 82), Kin Community (-21 to No. 71), The Pet Collective (-16 to No. 39), Geek and Sundry (-16 to No. 37), and — both dropping 15 — Ride Channel (to No. 35) and 123 UNO DOS TRES (to No. 62).
We still don’t have stats for 3V Fitness Fail and Alchemy Networks. We’re working on it.
VidStatsX supplies our data with one exception: YouTube provides views for the shows it funds on Mondo Media. Channels highlighted in beige are the ones that were launched before Google introduced its original channels program in November. Here’s our latest ranking:

These numbers are puny. What is more interesting is that Google “advanced” the money like a record company. What a sham, what a waste of people’s energy. The content is lousy, generally. And engagement is so small compared to TV…
AMEN. been saying that since Deadline has been posting these numbers. They’re unimpressive.

These “puny” numbers are in many instances larger than any single episode’s viewership on established networks like ABCFamily and Disney Channel. I think you’ll find the number of people who watched a single episode of, say, “Episodes” (arguably a high-quality offering) is dwarfed by some of these stats.
78M views at a $30 cpm =$2,340,000 = about $120M in a year of a $100M investment. Its a good test, obviously they need to invest more into the successful channels to improve quality control, get the engagement, sales and CPMs they need, but its not a sham or waste, its a good toe in the water – the VICE stuff is great for instance. What happens in years 2/3 and on will be very interesting.
what’s really impressive is a channel like ClevverNews beating out well-known names like WSJ, WWE and The Onion. People like cute girls and entertainment news. That’s not going to change, well done.
I agree with you Lisa, Deidre Behar and Katie Krause are great talents and producers. Ones to watch!
Why do people keep comparing Apples to Oranges?
In order to compare to television, all viewers that watched any given channel in any given 7 day period would have to be counted. Every time a new show came on, each viewer would have to be counted again – that’s the difference between a click and a viewer. Television’s numbers if calculated like Youtube’s would register in the many billions/trillions.
