Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment announced today that the filmed adaptation of the young-adult adventure novel Divergent, which Neil Burger has been set to direct, will open wide in North America on March 21, 2014. So far, it has the release date all to itself (it’s sandwiched between Fox’s Me And My Shadow on March 14 and Paramount’s Noah on March 28). The book was written by 23-year-old Veronica Roth and has topped the New York Times Best Sellers list since it was published in May 2011 by Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins Publishers. Divergent is set in a futuristic Chicago that’s divided into five ideological factions to stabilize society and uphold peace. Every citizen must choose a permanent faction at age 16 — either their own or another. The story focuses on Beatrice Prior, who is struggling to survive her initiation into the most aggressive and physically demanding of the factions. Evan Daugherty is penning the screenplay. Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher will produce under their Red Wagon Entertainment banner, along with Pouya Shahbazian.

Awesome book hope they dont screw it up
The next Hunger Games. Bet on it.
As some one who read and highly enjoyed the hunger games… it’s actually quite different. I enjoyed Divergent SO MUCH more than the hunger games. If you haven’t read Divergent yet, then please do so.
I disagree, I think that the Hunger Games were far better written than Divergent and Insurgent. While I really enjoyed the plot of those two books and am looking forward to the third, the writing style was pretty immature. I also think Tris’s relationship with Four is very forced and added into the story just for conflict. I would like to see a young adult novel with a female protagonist who doesn’t need a love interest.
I couldn’t agree more with your comments. I didn’t realize Veronica Roth was only 23. That explains a lot.
To say that the writing style is immature in Divergent compared to Hunger Games is bloody irrelevant, and could be easily countered by saying that Hunger Games is a ripoff of classic dystopias and the Running Man by Steven King. Plus Divergent is more of a look at the sociological aspects of people and how they would react when put in a situation where only some natural human qualities are allowed hunger games is a fun read and does have interesting concepts but nothing that hasn’t been done before (read running man if you don’t believe me)
Umm Hunger Games is like the best book everr. I love Divergent and I love The Hunger Games so why can’t we all just get along and stop hating on everyone else’s favorite books. But I have to say I love The Hunger Games more:)
I totally agree. And I feel like divergent was a lot more original. Hunger games was like running man, and battle royale, and like the roman gladiators. Plus, Divergent has no love triangle so horrayy for that.
Divergent and The Hunger Games are both great books with a different story line and plot. We can’t really compare them, since the only thing they have in common is they’re dystopian novels. That’s like saying Harry Potter and Twilight are the say thing because they both have mythical creatures.
Plus, the Hunger Games is a book with a female protagonist who has two men chasing after her. There is even more romance in that than there is in Divergent.
Don’t get me wrong, I love both of the series, but it irks me when people compared them. Just like it irked THG fans when THG was compared to Twilight.
I really disagree with this. No offense, but I think that Hunger Games was not written as good as it should be. Whilst it was still good, it needed more description. The Hunger Games was rather juvenile. While it had a great story line and plot it lacked the description that J.K Rowling, Veronica Roth and even Stephanie Meyer have the ability to do. (Stephanie Meyer is good at writing but sucks at thinking of ideas to write about.) In Mockingjay, I swear Suzanne Collins just the wrote the start and the middle, figured that she’ll run out of space and just rushed through the ending. Basically what I am saying is that Divergent and Insurgent were equally good if not better written than Hunger Games, but Hunger Games was more interesting. (Sorry.)
Thank-you! Finally someone agrees with me about the writing style of Mockingjay. I enjoyed the first two books even though the writing was horribly juvenile, but i was severely disappointed with Mockingjay. The ending was so condensed and rushed that you had to stop yourself, go back, and re-read because in the space of a page or two Collins had killed off half the characters in such a messy poorly thought out way that you didn’t actually realise what happened.
Regardless though, all three books were written in such a manner that leaves me to believe that they are geared towards the very young end of the YA spectrum.
While a good concept, albeit slightly unoriginal, the trilogy could have been something special in the hands of a more seasoned author.
I thought Divergent was far better written than Hunger Games. I was, like, I don’t know whether this was written before or after, but the writing style was superior, but I guess that’s why there are so many books out there… Everyone has different tastes.
I disagree completely . I thought the hunger games was far more immature than divergent. The characters had less substance and seemed too stereotypical. It aslo lacked alot of description.I found divergent alot more thought provoking because of Tris trying to find her place as well as a sense of morality in a one dimensional society.
Having said that…I really hope people don’t keep comparing the two! This always causes conflict.
I disagree! I think that the Divergent series was very well written and just as amazing as the Hunger Games.
I would have to disagree. I love hunger games to death. But I like how I don’t hate the main character.
Very True!!!!
I deffenatly agree hinged games was good but divergent os so much better and they sered together totally tops the hunger games.
But I’m worried they will mess up the mental pictire I have in my head :/
I agree that Divergent is so much better and here is why – 1) mockingjay is soooooo lame and boring… I could only get through 1/4 of it and then it got boring, Divergent, I read twice in a span of 2 months… I LOVE DIVERGENT BETTER THAN HUNGER GAMES AND I’M NOT AFRAID TO SHOW IT!
Good thing there’s only one guy…
OMG yes Divergent and The Hunger Games are similar with the 16-year-old-protagonist-survival-killing thing and all that but they are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! I love both trilogy (I love The Hunger Games more though)
PLEASE read the freaking book first!
YES! Can’t wait for the movie!!
No It Is Not!! I hate the hunger games but love this!!
Now when will they schedule You’re Next? It’s now been a year since they acquired the film. I’m hoping it doesn’t become Cabin in the Woods 2.0 with all of its delays.
Evan Daughtery’s getting rewritten.
I’m Salvador Garcia age 15 Im in 9th grade I have been in Chorus since 4th grade and Orchestra since 5th At my high school I am in Theater 1 And I just love it. I elreally love to act and sing or preform in front of people I’m a very outgoing person. My school will be doing a musical that I will audition for and I just really want to be an actor I love Divergent and I will be reading Insurgent soon I consider myself part of the Amity fraction.
SOOOO excited! I know where I’ll be March 14/14.
Now we just need them to cast Taissa Farmiga as Tris and my excitement will be complete! #Taissa4Tris
Divergent is a really great book! I can’t wait for the official casting announcements!
The book is set in Chicago, with a wall/fence separating it from the world. You don’t realize until the end of the 2nd book that there is a world outside…
Spoiler my friend!
Many have not read the second book yet…..
Spoiler alert.
Why do that?
Considering it’s been out for more than 5 months, I think it’s fair game..
Oh boy. Hunger Games again? By age 16 bla bla bla young girl bla bla bla God bless America bla bla bla yawn
This book is not the hunger games. It’s completely different. Not to mention as someone who read hunger games and loved them, Divergent is better! If you haven’t read it yet, I encourage you to do so.
Just because it’s also a dystopian story with a 16 year old female protagonist does not mean it’s the same thing as The Hunger Games. It just means that they are both aimed toward teens of that age. I assume you haven’t read Divergent…I assure you, similarities are very rare.
PLEASE DO READ THE BOOKS FIRST! They are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!
EXACTLY!!! It’s possible to love both series too witch I do but forced to pick I lean toward Divergent!
I love divergent, great book and can’t wait
YEEEEEI i´m so excited!
/(^.^)/
There is far better, fresher dystopian material out there than Divergent! What about Blood Red Road by Moira Young, The Forsaken by Lisa Stasse, Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi and of course The Maze Runner by James Dashner! Divergent has the potential to be the next John Carter more than the next HG if they mess it up! I read for a studio and I am nervous that they would bet on Divergent (no matter how many copies it has sold).
Agreed on this. Maze Runner has much broader appeal and better action. The Forsaken does too, on the sci-fi/action front.
“Divergent is set in a future where America is divided into five ideological factions to stabilize society and uphold peace.” Uh, it’s just Chicago, not the whole US
Omg, I’m SO excited. I’m going to turn into the foaming mouth guy when the trailer comes out (Avatar: The Last Airbender Reference).
And NO, it’s not another Hunger Games, to all of you morons who think it is. While the two are similar, they’re completely different stories with completely different characters and, over all, completely different plots. Even the romance is different. (instead of it being that she’s kind of playing the dude, they do like each other, and they can both easily take care of themselves).
Whoo. Sorry about the rant. Still, totally excited.
Can’t wait for this film! I just hope Tobias will be cast well because they never seem to choose a good male lead for these book/movie crossovers. Also, I’ve read all the Hunger Games, Divergent and Insurgent…these two trilogies are very different and I certainly prefer Divergent. It’s a new concept, interesting story and the love story is fantastic!
Divergent isnt actually all that similar to the hunger games. The only real similarity is the dystopian future and theres a war. Read the book. You wont regret it.
Divergent is the best book I have ever read (besides the Bible). I really hope that Saoirse Ronan gets to play Tris. It’s her or one of the Fanning Girls (Dakota/Elle)
tim burton should do it. that would be a fantastic movie!
Great, another great book that is doomed to be ruined by mainstream idiots who will now only read it for the movie.
Well. If they are going to do this, Max Irons and Saoirse Ronan better play Four and Tris.
Let’s hope they don’t screw it up
Yes yes yes!!! I love the trilogy (well what’s already been made) and I can’t wait!
Stop saying it’s the next Hunger Games. They are WAY different. It’s like when people were saying Hunger Games is the next Harry Potter. They are all completely different.
I really hope they cast Arielle Kebbel as Tris. http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111203174454/vampirediaries/images/a/a7/Lexi.PNG
If not I’ll be disappointed.
I can see where you’re coming from. Tris is only sixteen though! And she is supposed to be small. 5’8” is fairly tall.
Wow… that girl looks *nothing at all* like the Tris in my head. Funny how we all develop such different conceptions. I don’t envy casting directors.
If Elle Fanning got steely enough, maybe she could pull it off. I’ll be curious to see who they find — maybe someone none of us have ever heard of?
Possibly by “next Hunger Games,” people just mean that it’ll be the next giant movie franchise based on a YA novel/trilogy, rather than positing that Twilight/Hunger Games/Divergent are all basically the same, which of course they’re not. Otherwise, what would it say about us that anytime there is a book or film with a 16- or 17-year-old girl as the main character, it’s suddenly “just like” every other book/film with a 16- or 17-year-old girl as the main character? Just pondering.
I am pretty excited!!! Definetly think that Divergent was better than the hunger games and i will definetly be there opening night!!!!!!!! I think they should cast Alex Pettyfer as Tobias!!
Super Pumped!!
Please never, ever, as long as you live say that again.
Alex is sexy, but he is a shallow guy with a bad rep as a player. Also, his acting is almost as bad as the cast of Twilight. Almost. (Except for R Pattz, he has real talent)
Alex has expressed MANY TIMES that he is done playing teenagers in movies.
And finally, he is absolutely nothing like Four and type-casting him like that is really upsetting. Why does everyone pick this shallow ass hole who can’t act to portray EVERY decent YA male?
Pettyfer for Jace, for Peeta, for Four, for Finnick? Where the hell dso you all come up with these things?
i have read the books of this saga and they are awesome!
i have been waiting for this movie since i read them!
it will be an amusing film as the books are!
U all frget that she started the book when she was in college and that the book got popular just thru people talking. U would Think that must be anuf be to counsitered a good book. Why do i hav o wait to march 14/14 to see the movie.
