As was the case of The X Factor last year, the last members of American Idol‘s judging panel were announced just hours before the show’s first televised audition today. Here is the first group photo of new judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban, joined by returning judge Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest at the taping in New York. Jackson is keeping his anchor spot as the last judge to speak, while Carey is positioned to open critiques.

Oh my that picture isn’t easy on the eyes. I won’t be tuning in to see these guys. American Idol is over for me.
This is a joke, right? Yikes! Now there’s a motley crew.
Yikes!
Who the hell makes these decisions?
Giant mistake putting Nicki Minaj in there. Desperation move to be sure. She looks and acts like a circus performer, can’t imagine what Mike Darnell and crew were thinking on this one.
I agree with you.
Totally agree! About Minaj……….ridiculous! How is she going to judge classical or country vocals? I get Mariah Carey ……she’s a VOCALIST, I get Keith Urban as he represents rock and country and Jackson has been there a while?……Ryan Seacrest looking for “younger” demographic!
I feel sorry for Ryan Seacrest.
I agree… I could not be less inclined to watch this circus act!
I feel sorry for the public being forced to listen to Seacrest on almost every TV channel and the radio!
“The old crew finished their shift, and the new crew took over the controls. ‘Let us take a photograph together before we set sail,’ said the new co-pilot ‘after all, this voyage is going to be famous’.”
-From the book REMEMBERING THE HINDENBURG
when they hired nicki minaj it became a joke.
None of them is interesting. I think idol made a huge mistake with this panel. I won’t be watching. Don’t want to see another boring WGWG anyway or another country singer. So boring, so wrong.
That pix alone is a ratings dip.
I’m all for snarkiness, but everyone seems a bit quick to rush to judgment. Maybe Nicki or Mariah — who I ordinarily dislike — will be a pleasant surprise. I certainly never expected Blake Shelton to be as charming or engaging as he is on The Voice. As for Randy, however, we have years of experience to know he’s worthless.
Randy your a legend but I am shocked you stayed for the disaster season. Whoever made this dicision has reached the Peter Principal.
All they need is some dynamic singing talent, and the judges will become irrelevant. But if they end up with a bunch of breathless folkies again, forget it.
This looks like a still from a bad SNL skit
American Idol should bring back Simon, Paula, Randy and Ryan for one final season and call it quits! Fremantle, 19, FOX, etc. have enough material to maintain their multi-billion dollar licensing and merchandising franchise for years to come, so give it up and launch something fresh and new already! Sheesh!!! Talk about beating a dead horse!
If you dont think this cast will give new life to this show and EASILY boost ratings you probably aren’t the demographic they are aiming for anyway. Cant wait to see what you have to say when ratings are posted for the premiere.
Are you familiar with the term “dead cat bounce”?
People were saying the EXACT same thing about The X-Factor and Britney Spears…until it premiered to tepid numbers last week.
The CIRCUS is in town! This is really American Idols Barnum and Bailey years.
This show is absoutely finished after this season as it will be even worse when they had those crackpots on from two years ago and last year. Who came up with these choices anyways? Goodbye AI!
Yuck. I’m seeing a massive tanking for American Idol as it falls off the cliff in ratings.
Now that is a HOT MESS! And I will not be watching… sorry IDOL!
Well in the good ol’ days there were Simon & Ryan always taking jabs at each other from across the stage, but these 2 ladies has only one chair and an aussie between them, WOW!!! Poor Keith, Hope he’s strong (and quick) enough to keep these two seperated. Hell with the singers, all the action and fun is down front in 2013.
Poor Keith Urban stuck between all that crazy.
I’ve never been to hell, but I imagine that’s pretty close.
I will not be watching the hot mess.
Xfactor was up against the Voice. Plus you are comparing one of the biggest pop icons ever (Mariah) combined with the biggest crossover artist of the day to one just one pop star. Brit is big but not as big as those two. Mariah will bring the older audience and Nicki will bring in everyone else.
This is an interesting choice. I stopped watching Idol years ago. But it’s curious that their judges are now primarily people of color. The only “white” person is Keith Urban, and he’s Australian. Yes to people of color and yes to AI.
