Putting Breaking Bad on Netflix is credited for the ratings surge the AMC series has experienced this season as more viewers discover the serialized drama. ABC is hoping for a similar bump for the second seasons of its returning serialized dramas Once Upon A Time, Revenge and Scandal. In a unusual move so early into series’ runs, the complete first seasons of the three ABC shows are being made available for U.S. members to watch instantly on Netflix and will become exclusive to Netflix at the end of the month. The move is timed to get the three series out just days before their second-season premieres.
Disney-ABC has always been more open than its counterparts to video subscription services, including signing the first deal with iTunes back in the day. A number of its series, including Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Desperate Housewives and Lost, already have its previous seasons available on Netflix. The decision to put Once Upon A Time, Revenge and Scandal on Netflix is in stark contract with CBS’ policy on its series. For example, drama Person Of Interest, also heading into its second season, can’t be seen anywhere online, which has been a bone of contention with its creators.
The old school of thought has been to keep a network’s exclusivity of content and to protect the syndication value of a series by limiting the number of reruns. But for serialized dramas, off-network syndication has been an ever-diminishing prospect, while video streaming services such as Netflix have emerged as a suitable alternative as such content thrives on those platforms. Many series, such as NCIS and most recently How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory, saw ratings increases when their previous seasons began airing in syndication. ABC is hoping to see the same with Once Upon A Time, Revenge and Scandal. Or at least make the shows accessible to new viewers as getting into a serialized drama later into its run is difficult for the uninitiated, leading to inevitable ratings declines.

Smart move from ABC. CBS promo for Person of interest is:
TV’S #1 NEW DRAMA, but nobody can see pilot for example. And there are fundamentals. WB want to take 2-3 million per ep from PoI in syndication, but that policy hert show’s ratings.
Was going to get caught up on either Person of Interest or Revenge, it looks like CBS made that decision for me
REVENGE! REVENGE! REVENGE!
Worked on me. I just finished the first season of Scandal on Netflix, and now I’m looking forward to the second season!
Same here. I’ve given up watching series via Disc on netflix because of the availability of certain discs and such; so it was great to actually be able to catch up with scandal before season 2 starts so I can watch it live instead of waiting another year on the home video license.
Same. I caught up with Scandal over the weekend. But I was really surprised when I tried to catch up with Person of Interest that it wasn’t available anywhere online…
Only one mistake. Not sure that is CBS policy. I think that is WB. And i think that they are wrong. Its 21 century.
But if Person of interest take CBS post super bowl slot, CBS must order spin-off with female lead for person of interest. After Mr.Reese, Jack Bauer etc. Its time for female in dress not only hero is suit.
Bile, I saw it on the weekend. I wonder what Amazon will do next!!
Two days after Mellissa and Joey finished its 2nd season on ABC Family the entire 2nd season was up on Netflix. Disney/ABC is far ahead of the curve compared to the rest of the networks, Revenge/Scandal/Once Upon a Time is just another example of that.
Someone should tell CBS this isn’t 1950 anymore.
Great. I only wish they had made these available sooner so I could watch them before the new seasons start.
You can still watch them before the new season starts…just do mini marathons when you get a few hours of free time. you might have to take a break but it will be worth it.
I love it, I already saw all these while they were on but I now I can tell some friends to watch them
Cool! There are too many series inexplicably not on streaming, even ones that are long since cancelled. Does the Shield or even The Sopranos even bring in much revenues anymore? I can see why Netflix streaming is the last stop in a show’s lifecycle, but lifecycles don’t last forever, and need to be calculated on a per season basis anyway.
Don’t count on seeing Sopranos on it. HBO (and Warner Bros., its parent company) are violently opposed to doing any kind of legitimate business with Netflix in terms of Instant Watch. WB is also the company who got confrontational with Netflix and Redbox and started the 28 day delay on those services getting discs for rent too, which other studios jumped on board with once they smelled blood in the water.
The Shield may have a better chance, as Fox and Sony deal with Netflix better. Sons of Anarchy for example is on Netflix.
I’m so stoked for this. 3 of the best new shows this past season. They deserve higher ratings and hopefully this will help in that regard!
Thanks to Netflix, I was able to catch up on Breaking Bad and was able to watch the last 2 episodes of Season 5 day and date.
If you aren’t watching Breaking Bad, BEST show on the TV right now. Thoroughly intricate storytelling, with performances that leave you on the edge of your seats. From the engaging opening sequence until the cliff hanger entrapment ending. You’ll be begging to watch just one more episode after every episode. Trust me, Bitch!! Best Show you aren’t watching. Spread the word.
As for Revenge … I watched it all last season and it is easily the best guilty pleasure of last season. The series really found its creative tone during the later half of the season and my hopes for the new season are to see if it can amp up the camp quality it’s prone towards and just go full blown Melrose Place crazy sexy soap.
Revenge is worth a catch-up. If you don’t have time for all eps, you can watch the pilot, the ep with the party (14 or 15?) and the last few of the season, then dive into Season 2.
