EXCLUSIVE: In a throwback to the early days of television when sitcoms were broadcast live, Fox has teamed with comedy writer-producers Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith for Live From Our Living Room, a re-imagining of the domestic family multi-cam sitcom shot and aired live every week. The network has given a script commitment plus penalty to the project, from 20th Century Fox TV where Yuspa and Goldsmith are under an overall deal. This is the second sale for the duo in their first development season at 20th TV; they have a pilot production commitment at NBC for The Gates, a single-camera comedy based on a British format and executive produced by Aaron Kaplan. Live From Our Living Room reunites Yuspa and Goldsmith with Fox where they created ‘Til Death.
Once a staple, live comedy is extremely rare on TV these days, with NBC’s late-night sketch comedy Saturday Night Live left alone to carry the tradition. A handful of comedy series have tried going live for stunt episodes, most notably The Drew Carey Show and 30 Rock. I hear Yuspa and Goldsmith’s background and love for theater and a desire to utilize the talents of performers who come out of improv comedy contributed to their decision to try something different with Live. They are with ICM Partners Ken Richman.

Most notably The Drew Carey Show and 30 Rock? I’ll admit those shows are more prominent, but I think Roc was most notable as it’s entire 25-episode second season was performed live.
This is not an attack on Yuspa and Goldsmith…In fact, I think they should be commended for feeding the idiots who run the networks exactly what they think they’re looking for… Low concept “hooks” that have become necessary to sell a show to networks. Or in this case a No concept “hook” that will be the first thing to go if this show gets off the ground. There’s a reason nobody does Live TV anymore… It sucks. It sucked when Drew Carey did it…it sucked everytime Will & Grace did it. 30 Rock is the exception to the rule as they are in most cases. SNL should have abonded the “L” long ago. SNL digital shorts and the prerecorded commercials have been the only consistently funny part of the show for years.
Maybe Yuspa & Goldsmith are smart enough to already know that this “hook” at best will serve as a trojan hoarse to sneak a traditional family show past the morons guarding the castle then they can drop the gimik once inside. If so I’m jealous that I didn’t think of it first.
Yuspa and Goldsmith are geniuses and will create, perfectly, whatever they set their minds to. If I may help them in any way, they know my number.
