EXCLUSIVE: FX has put in development a drama from playwright/screenwriter Stephen Belber. The untitled project is a New York-based thriller chronicling a murder and cover up. Instead of a standard pitch, Belber wrote a detailed treatment, which was sent to cable networks. Several were interested, with the project ultimately going to FX.
Belber started off as a playwright, writing Tape, The Laramie Project and Match, whose 2004 Broadway production starred Frank Langella and Ray Liotta. In features, he wrote and directed the 2008 indie Management starring Jennifer Aniston and Steve Zahn. He is currently writing a script based on the 60 Minutes segment Gospel For Teens for Universal Pictures, Eat This Document for Moneyball director Bennett Miller, and he is adapting Why Should White Guys Have All Of The Fun as a starring vehicle for Jamie Foxx. His script Love And Weapons was recently acquired by Myriad Pictures. Belber, whose series credits include Law & Order: SVU, is with ICM Partners and Brillstein Entertainment.

Why more studios and networks aren’t receptive to pitches in writing is beyond me. It certainly seems like a written pitch is more up a writer’s alley than pretending we’re some kind of car salesman or actor.
Well done. Steve’s a fine writer who knows how to pen New York and this iis the right network for his sensibility. Good all around for sure.
I concur. Networks would save a bunch a cash if they just made writers come in with more than just a fart of an idea.
