A lot has been written about the decline of broadcast’s 10 PM hour at the hands of cable drama that is starting to catch up with its network competitors in the ratings. The trend was in full force last night when FX’s Sons Of Anarchy beat two broadcast dramas to finish second in the 10 PM time period in adults 18-49 and 18-34. In adults 18-49, SOA averaged a 2.1 rating (2.63 million viewers), down a modest 8% from last week when it faced weaker competition. It finished No.2 in the demo in all of television only behind the series premiere of CBS’ Vegas (2.5/3.15 million) and ahead of the season premiere of Private Practice (1.9/2.37 million) and an original Parenthood (1.8/2.28 million). It also out-delivered the combo of the fourth season premiere of Comedy Central’s Tosh.0 (1.3), which finished second among all cable shows last night behind SOA, and the series premiere of Brickleberry (1.0).

Remember when shows got cancelled for only having 8 million viewers? Bye Bye alphabet channels…
Yeah the big four aren’t going anywhere, bro… but you better believe your cable bill will. Up, up, up and away… just so you can hear a couple curse words and maybe see a breast or three.
We’ll be fine. But thanks for thinking of us.
The Big Four
The fact that a fan (employee) of the big four uses the term “bro” in his post says it all.
But thanks for thinking you guys aren’t in trouble. Your denial is hilarious.
The Guy Who Doesn’t Say Bro.
Yeah, cuz a couple curse words and breats are totally the reason cable is kicking ass. It has nothing to do with writing that’s leagues better than the pablum the networks keep shoving out…
Congrats to Kurt and all involved with the show. Last night’s episode was jaw-dropping.
ConGraTs Kurt Sutter, Cast and crew! Thanks, You managed to make millions cry all in one hour with #whodiesonsoa awesome writing and performances by all involved.
I miss the way TV used to be, when the four networks reigned supreme. I don’t know, maybe because it was simpler. Maybe I’m just feeling nostalgic.
This isn’t news. SOA has been regularly competitive in its timeslot for years now. NBC & ABC Tuesday@10 shows haven’t been able to crack the 2.0 A18-49 rating for a while now. SOA has been regularly beating them this *and* last season.
Parenthood, Body of Proof and Private Practice all cracked 2′s last yr.. liar!
Sons of Anarchy is a really good show it deserves to be in the number 2 slot at least. It is cool and edgy unlike most other shows in the same time slot
Good ratings are proof you can never go wrong with casting Tisdale in a guest spot.
I tuned in just to watch her get the sh!t beat out of her Tuesday night. Love her!
SOA!!!! Critically acclaimed as one of the best shows on tv EVER. Too bad it doesnt get recognized in the industry for awards. I dont understand how Katey Sagal deservedly wins an award 2 years ago, yet the show itself or star Charles Hunnam doesnt even get a nomination this year?
Same can be said for Justified. With Margo Martindale and Jeremy Davies winning Emmys, I would think more critics would be paying attention to both of these series and giving the actors their rewards.
It doesn’t need to be recognized by the industry as long as there are people who are devoted to the show
I hope this gets pick up for many more seasons
