Good Morning America beat rival Today last week in total viewers and the adults 25-54 demo by the widest margin in 18 years. GMA outperformed its NBC morning-show rival by 883,000 total viewers for the week of August 27-31, the largest victory for the ABC show since the week of May 16, 1994. Among the key demo, GMA has 1.969 million compared to Today’s 1.817 million, the widest gap since the week of August 15, 1994. It was a week of upheaval on GMA last week: As expected, anchor Robin Roberts announced that August 31 would be her last day on the air before leaving to undergo a bone marrow transplant. Still, except for a bump during the London Olympics, Today has lagged GMA for eight of the past 10 weeks this summer.

Maybe the problem was not Ann Curry but it was actually Matt Lauer? He has gotten a bit high and mighty holier than thou. And the way he helped railroad Ann off the show, was disgusting..IMO
Nice! It really is a wonderful program.
As long as Matt Lauer is on The Today Show, GMA will win the ratings race. The general public knows that Lauer stabbed Ann Curry in the back and people have refused to watch the show as long he’s on it. He has ruined his own reputation by his own despicable actions. I thing it’s great that The Today Show is sinking farther and farther in the ratings against GMA.
What goes around, comes around. Karma is good, eh Matt?
I think you give the “general public” too much credit. I doubt most of them care what happened to Ann Curry. Likely it’s just a view shift. It happens. No one can be #1 forever.
Well said! Matt should have been replaced by Lester Holt and Ann Curry should have stayed on. I think that Savanah was a very poor choice as the new co-host – I find her annoying for some reason that I just can’t quite put my finger on – I just found myself switching to GMA every time she came on?!! Now I am only watching GMA on weekdays but am still faithful to Lester Holt and Jenna Wolfe on the weekends!
I am with ya. I like your suggestions on who should take over. They would be perfect. I thought I was the only person who thought Savannah was annoying but can not place it.
Totally agree. I know my friends and I know he stabbed his coworker in the back as well as the rest of America. He wanted a scapegoat for his own failings, and that is just so low. I will not and have not watched the Today show since.
Lovin’ it! So when do they fire the suits who canned the female co-host?
If they get rid of that twerp Lauer I will watch. I really like Savanah Guthrie, unless she has or will sleep with Lauer then I will have lost my respect. Ann Currie was really good too. it should be Ann and Savanah hosting with Al Roker in the middle making nonsensical wisecracks!
I believe the problem is not so much that TODAY has declined on many levels (which it has) as much as it is that GOOD MORNING AMERICA has gradually become, well, just that GOOD. Slowly but surely, GMA has grown its current dynamic formula that makes it the best of the morning shows. It’s not just the Robin and George show; Lara and Josh are wholly integral characters to the overall chemistry, and also Sam. They play off each other very well. Throw in the show’s strong sense of pace, well balanced stories, and the formidable ABC News unit behind it, and you’ve got a stellar morning program. TODAY? That’s so…YESTERDAY.
You’re so right. Even GMA’s production value seems to trump TODAY these days. I feel as if there’s a huge, fun-filled party going on at Times Square while a few spectators peek in at 30 Rock.
This is not a surprise. I lost a lot of respect for Today when they brought on Sarah Palin, The Kardashians, Ryan Seacrest, and Kate Gosselin as guests. Plus, the diva Matt Lauer doesn’t help any. They deserve to fail.
F.Y.I. Sarah Palin brought TODAY its best ratings in quite awhile. She best the much hyped appearance of Katie Couric on GMA. Sorry for the facts.
As a producer, it’s been painfully obvious to me why it’s failing. (quickly now) After so many years you would think they’d know how to (hurry, 30 seconds left) schedule time to actually finish a segment (sorry, we have to go)so viewers could actually learn how to (AND WE’RE OUT.)
The problem is Savannah. You can’t have the sympathy roll out for Ann Curry and the resentment not be directed a someone. She may not reach Deborah Norville heights of viewer disdain but the ratings won’t return and a year from now neither will Savannah.
Yo Ann Curry-permission to do the Happy Dance. Matt began in Providence as the co-host on PM Magazine. He got lucky and has friends in high places, namely Bryant Gumbel. Maybe NBC should consider moving Today into the Entertainment division. It’s a man’s world-Matt has a signed deal memo. He’s Mr. Teflon. I haven’t watched the show since they signed up 43′s daughter as a correspondent.
Ive watched the Today show EVERY morning since high school (1990). The day after Ann curry left was my last day to watch it. I have been watching Good morning America ever since (even skipped the Olympics morning show) . I hate that I’m going to miss the Macys thanksgiving day parade. But I will not watch something or someone that can treat another person the way they did Ann curry.
A huge congratulations to GMA! Well deserved! It is dead-on obvious that the “Yesterday Show” ratings decline was NOT Ann Curry but primarily from 1) Lauer himself, as he’s arrogant, egotistical, & devious, 2) the show has no substance, 3) conflict amid the anchors & crew is easily readable; 4) also very readable is the power play!f Therefore, no cohesiveness & failure! Karma is very real! NBC/Today are in desperate mode! Go GMA Go!
Once again, Ann Curry was not the issue. She was stabbed in the back by Matt. He is the problem. Nobody likes him.
It was ironic that NBC said Ann Curry was not bringing in the viewers, yet at the same time, they were terrified about all of her fans and viewers showing backlash towards NBC if they let her go!?
Just in the interest of fairness, how does anyone know what Matt Lauer may or may not have done to Ann Curry? Where is there credible evidence that he is a “diva”? Why did the ratings nosedive after Ann Curry took over as co-host? (I mean nothing against her personally…she is lovely.) Matt Lauer was the host for 15 years of No. 1 ratings…so why exactly is this Matt Lauer’s fault?
So why did the ratings nosedived even more dramatically after Curry left if Lauer is such a golden boy? Couric was the one carrying the show. After she left there was gradual decline and GMA had time to catch up. Curry just happened to be promoted several months before GMA was going to catch up anyway. It wasn’t her fault. Lauer is definitely a diva. You can see it in his face and mannerism.
I didn’t really care for or about Ann Curry, but I DID decide to turn the channel permanently on Today after Curry’s uncomfortable exit and the trainwreck that followed. To my very pleasant suprise, I found GMA. The show is AWESOME! Professional, many more actual news stories, good chemistry from people who appear to genuinely care for one another, and no freaky Guthrie. I don’t know why either, but she’s like nails on a chalkboard. I know she’s very intelligent and pretty, but she gets on my nerves. You KNOW poor Al wants to get the hell out of dodge. It is so obvious that Matt and Savannah try to shut him out. Who do they think they are? Al is the only person with any credibility left on that show! They should be walking on egg shells so that he doesn’t abandon their sinking ship. Final nail in the coffin… 9/11 coverage. 9/11 is sacred and you couldn’t possibly have picked another individual to show us you couldn’t care less: A KARDASHIAN!
