BREAKING…. The Great Gatsby will be released on May 10, 2013 in North America, Warner Bros announced today, with an international rollout to follow the next week. The Baz Luhrmann-directed 3D adaptation from Warners and Village Roadshow had been slated for a Christmas 2012 bow before the studio moved it off that date last month, saying it wanted a summer date to reach a larger audience. Now it will lead off the summer slate, to be followed in May by The Hangover Part 3 (May 24) and the Superman reboot Man Of Steel (June 14). Gatsby stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, Isla Fisher and Elizabeth Debicki.

Don’t forget that the 1974 version was also released the month of May that year. And look how well that did. I’m just saying…
Iron Man 3 opens a week before this. I am sure the kids will be flocking to The Great Gatsby.
3D… of course! While reading the book and watching the various film adaptations, the one thing I kept thinking… if only this was be in 3D, then it could really be a classic.
Fucking hell Hollywood. Give the 3D shit a rest already.
Horrible date. Basically releasing a film based on a classic High School reading assignment right when the LAST thing young people want to do it think about school (they are coming up on finals and graduations). Also puts your Home Video release either in the late summer or early fall, where the same kids want nothing to do with school-type materials.
And yes, I totally “get” that Gatsby is probably not made for high schoolers, but why cut off that audience?
Ah, the perfect weekend for this film. Same weekend as several other WB hits – Dark Shadows, Speed Racer, Poseidon…
Oh my…
This is gonna be on TV, right ?
What a dumb move. At least they will be able to blame lower than expected returns on a tough and poorly chosen release date. Its pretty clear that Warmers doesn’t think it has an awards contender at this point.
Another turkey from Baz no doubt. WB trying to sell this as a summer movie is laughable. This is going to be a write-off.
A couple or three weeks before the Fourth would have been better I think. 3D for this could be an interesting international thing. America – that steroid-inflamed country who lords themselves over us mere 2D countries. A novel rife with nearly tangible specific symbols of the American Dream : the light across the bay; T.J. Eckleburg the Optometrist billboard; the parties; the swimming pool; the automobiles – objects are almost like characters; characters are like objects to collect (believe it or not Madonna did some great stuff as similar thematic take in “W.E.”) – I have high hopes. Could be fascinating. Also if it works well premiering it at the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center (the themes of privilege and proximity to Long Island coalescing) just after the start of the school year might not be a bad idea. This movie might exhume this particular era of it and exalt 3D once and for all. Using 3D as the basis for characterization (“Hugo” did this to some extent)I think is a lot more interesting than more of the same action stuff. Big Baz Luhrmann fan here. I think he can do it.
I think Baz so destroyed his reputation with that vehicle starring ‘ol frozen face, that it really is hard to think this will fare any better. This film really could be called “AMERICA’ couldn’t it?
