ABC Family has made its pilot orders, greenlighting drama Terminales and comedies Phys Ed and Continuing Fred. The three pilots will go into production this fall along with the previously announced drama pilots The Fosters (working title), executive produced by Jennifer Lopez, and Socio. “These pilots will further our strength in both the drama and comedy areas,” said ABC Family EVP Kate Juergens, noting that the network is looking to extend its streak of launching a top-rated new series in the young demos every summer, something it has done in the past three years with Pretty Little Liars (2010), Switched at Birth (2011) and Baby Daddy (2012). Here are the new pilots’ official descriptions:
Terminales is a one-hour drama based on a successful Mexican television format by Miguel Angel Fox and follows a young woman’s life after she is diagnosed with a terminal illness. The pilot was written by Susanna Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz. Aaron Kaplan (GCB, The Neighbors, Terra Nova), Fogel and Lefkowitz will serve as executive producers. It will be produced by Lionsgate in association with Televisa.
Phys Ed is a half-hour multi-camera comedy series about a high school’s star jock who returns to teach at his former alma mater only to find that, even though he’s changed, nothing else really has. The pilot is written and-executive produced by David H. Steinberg (American Pie 2). It is produced by Prodco, Inc.
Continuing Fred is a half-hour multi-camera comedy about 20-somethinginifred “Fred” Harris, a newly-graduated slacker with an overbearing family who surprisingly finds purpose when she begins to teach at a local elementary school. Written by Bill Daly (Mike and Molly), the pilot is produced by Prodco, Inc.

What’s with all of these multi cams? The only good comedy ever on ABC Family was 10 Things, a single cam. They should stick to what they do best.
10 THINGS was well-liked by many at ABC Family, but it never rated well. Since then, traditional multi-cam sitcoms like MELISSA & JOEY and BABY DADDY have set ratings records. Good business if not great art. For what it’s worth, BABY DADDY seems to be getting better as it goes along.
So you just chose to ignore the fact that they have the top rated new series every summer? Lol. I think they might know what they are doing.
There’s a young exec over at ABC Fam who is obsessed with really really bad multi-cams like Melissa and Joey. They get just enough ratings to justify their existence, but will never grow or expand the brand.
It’s a creative failure and ultimately a bad business model. They either need to take some risks in the comedy space or get out of it…
Terminales sounds like Big C for teens.Terminales,Socio sound dark, depressing and not like something teens should watch but I’ll check out Terminales probably. (im 31, in the older end of thier target demo).I’ve watched most of abcfamilys shows over the years-Wildfire,Nine Lives of Chloe King,Pretty Little Liars,Bunheads,Switched at Birth,Lying Game,Make it or break it,Jane by Design.
The Fosters sounds like the only thing worth checking out on their new slate. It actually sounds like it could be brave and quite groundbreaking for ABCFamily. Otherwise, Socio and Terminales both sound like rehashes of Showtime shows, but for teens. Fail.
bring on the comedies!
