EXCLUSIVE: Starz‘s Miami-set period drama Magic City is beefing up the cast for Season 2 with major additions. I’ve learned that Sonny Corleone himself, veteran actor James Caan, is joining the series in a major recurring role, along with NYPD Blue alum Esai Morales.
Set in 1959 Miami shortly after the Cuban Revolution, Magic City tells the story of Ike Evans (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the owner of Miami’s glitzy Miramar Playa hotel, who is forced to make a deal with local mob boss Ben Diamond (Danny Huston). Caan will play Sy Berman,
the head of the Chicago mob and Diamond’s boss. A father figure to Ben, Sy saw the potential in the young con and encouraged Ben’s criminal talents — creating “The Butcher.” Unbeknownst to Ben, Sy also has a secret connection to Ben’s wife Lily (Jessica Marais). Morales will play Carlos Ruiz, a former rebel who once fought beside Castro but now works to free Cuba from the man he once considered a brother.
Bringing in Caan to Magic City is fitting as the series is said to be inspired by The Godfather, which co-starred Caan in his signature, Oscar-nominated role as Sonny Corleone. On Magic City, Caan will be reunited with follow Godfather alum Alex Rocco, who recurs as Ike’s father Arthur. For CAA-repped Caan, this represents the biggest series commitment since his starring role on NBC’s Las Vegas. He will next be seen in Blood Ties. Morales, repped by Innovative Artists and KLWGN, recently recurred on Fairly Legal and Caprica.
Filming on Season 2 of Magic City starts this week in Miami for a 2013 premiere. Returning are creator/executive producer Mitch Glazer and cast members Morgan, Olga Kurylenko, Huston, Kelly Lynch, Steven Strait, Christian Cooke, Marais, Yul Vazquez, Dominik Garcia-Lorido and Elena Satine. Glazer, Geyer Kosinski and Fred Berner executive produce.

I’ll watch the series but also also wanna see the outtakes. These are some of the screwiest actors around as well as some of the best.
This is happening because MC was dying on the vine. The dialogue spoken on this show is simply laughable. The whole concept needs a redo.
nah – maybe just beef up the dialogue – plots are good. The sets & costumes are better than anything else on TV. Olga is amazing…
But give them credit for making some changes to improve the show. MC isn’t bad, just not as good as it should be.
What’s your problem? It’s a great show — as is !
This was one of the most disappointing series of last year. Solid cast, great production value, but mediocre writing overshadowed it all. The only way this survives is if Glazer hires other writers instead of doing it all himself, because the results haven’t been good.
Oh Please get a life. You are probably one of those frustrated
wirters that wishes he had a shot on that program. The plot is fabulous, the actors are incredible and the writing is amazing. That goes to show you how much you know about the business. By the way I have no writer friends nor anyone working with that show that I know off.
what a cheesy show. I can’t believe its coming back. How about doing something novel for this season- hire writers
Ironically, despite his credentials, Caan brings a certain cheesiness to his performances of late.
And I hope that, with Esai’s character background, the show doesn’t fall into a political focus on Cuba’s struggle.
Story is by the numbers..even with the ultra sex and kink.but great production values and good actors made it watchable. Now we have true charisma coming in to help.
I love love love this show and Jeffrey Dean Morgan is hot hot hot and I love the scripts. It’s so refreshing to see the class and sophication from the old days. We don’t see much of that on TV nowadays. Hurry back!
I’m a working TV drama writer for over a decade. In my time in writers’ rooms, I’ve never seen such an indifferent reaction to a series. No writers I know watched it past episode 2, nobody talk about it, nobody cares. It’s not terrible, but it’s certainly not good. At least a trainwreck like Smash was a guilty pleasure and got some buzz, but this doesn’t even merit a “meh.” It is the test pattern of pay cable.
This series is visually beautiful to watch and the development of the characters including use of flashbacks is wonderful. Majority of everyone I know that watches this series loves it. The acting, the writers, the sets. Those that are very
critical are probably use to seeing so much crap on television that they wouldn’t know a great show if they saw one.
I LOVED THIS SHOW AND SO DID MY FRIENDS!! Can’t wait for next season. Love the time, costumes, and actors. It’s great to go back to the late 50′s early 60′s. Mad Men was the only program who went back to that era and now we have Magic City. It’s fun to watch and brings back great memories. Don’t listen to the negative comments. My friends and I just love this program and find it to be pure entertainment we are all talking about next season. Thanks.
Magic City got me because it doesn’t focus on the gangsters 100% – instead it shows the people caught in the middle. The Ben Diamond character is so well-acted that he could put on a jester hat and still be a bad guy, even if the script is a little over the top. The production quality, when viewed on HD, is far superior to The Sopranos, and the cinematography mixes macho, sexy fem, and greed together really well. Waiting for the next round, and am thankful Starz isn’t using split-season trickery like Breaking Bad. I like their commitment to a movie-looking experience.
OH come on people…this is a good show with a throw back in time and better than all the trashy reality shows and some of the dumb comedy shows on ABC NBC AND CBS…it is far better than the Sopranos and love the cast and a little bit of sex goes along way here..it is entertaining so make some popcorn and stop nit picking and enjoy the ride!!!
I like the show. The writing does leave for wanting, but overall its a good show. I’m looking forward to season 2.
