BREAKING… The Kung Fu Panda director has come aboard Sherlock Gnomes, the 3D animated sequel to last year’s Disney-released Gnomeo & Juliet. Elton John‘s Rocket Pictures is producing again with the first movie’s co-writers Andy Riley and Kevin Cecil also back for the follow-up, which centers on the characters from the first movie enlisting the help of a famous gnome-detective in solving the sinister disappearance of gnomes from the suburban gardens of England. “John has the perfect sensibility for this movie, together with the vision to build on the first film to create a distinctive, fresh and action-packed adventure,” said Rocket CEO and producer Steve Hamilton Shaw. Stevenson is repped by CAA. Elton John is writing original music for the movie, which is now set to begin production early next year. Rocket Pictures, repped by UTA, also said today that it has hired former Walt Disney Animation production head Carolyn Soper to help oversee production on the pic, working alongside Hamilton Shaw as the company ramps up its animation ambitions. Rocket’s David Furnish and Elton John are also producing.

John Stevenson is so amazingly talented. He is so passionate about the art of animation. And he has done literally everything in that field from working with Jim Henson on The Muppet Show to directing one of DWA’s best films ever! I hope this half-baked (though successful) franchise realizes how LUCKY they are to have him. This news might even get me to go see this thing… you know, if it ever actually gets made.
Hope stars James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, and Ashley Jensen are back for the sequel! Gnomeo & Juliet has proved to be a hit with the younger set.
I took my kids to see Gnomeo and Juliet and I wanted blow my brains out.
This is great….I LOVED Gnomeo & Juliet! And the posting about Stevenson is right on target!
I was a PA starting out at Dreamworks Animation while John was there during the days when Katzenberg had everyone in constant triage production anxiety (from what I’ve heard, this is no longer the case and the movies have greatly improved with it). He was the kindest, most polite, incisive, humble person who never spoke down to me that I met in the entire building and I never forgot that example as my career continued, and for my money he co directed the first truly great Dworks Ani pic. Hope he someday gets the producer’s backing to realize something truly of his own someday.
You guys know that the harder you pump this trash, the more desperate you appear, right?
Couldn’t they get someone who can tell a story to direct this thing? What an awful choice.
I haven’t seen the first Gnomeo and Juliet film, but after hearing that the director of one of DWA’s truly greatest films is working on the sequel, I think I’ll see it if I have the chance.
