In New York to address the United Nations yesterday, President Obama also made time for a pre-taped visit with Barbara Walters and her co-hosts on The View. But, as The Daily Show host noted last night, Obama did not make time for “high-level prez-on-prez action.” Watch the video:
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

About time! I am a democrat mind you – but how about the President stop appearing on the View and tweeting with the Olympic female gymnasts? We get it – you’re cool – but how about tackling the deficit instead? And while you’re at it Obama, if you are really such a man of the people how about you don’t visit L.A. during rush hour and shut down traffic while you are going to high-end fundraisers?
I love Jon Stewart but it’s a fact that he tries to bash Obama once in a while so he doesn’t appear totally liberal. But Jon wouldn’t be complaining of Obama went on his show instead of The View, which millions of women watch. There’s no point in meeting other world leaders when Obama’s short term goal is to get re-elected. And Jon Stewart’s Emmy speech and act was so lame and insulting. You’re cool, we get it, now get over it that you are cool and you won so many Emmy’s, instead say THANKS.
I’m not sure you know what the definition of the word “fact” is but I agree with your “premise” that Stewart occasionally bashes liberals to give the appearance of non-bias.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a president with more free time than Obama. How he has the time to attend all these random sporting events and talk shows is beyond me.
You have never seen a President with more free time than Obama? Are you serious? Bush’s vacation schedule was record-setting, and he did this with a major terrorist attack on his watch, the worst natural disaster in Hurricane Katrina, starting 2 wars and the economic meltdown of his last year in office.
Are you serious? A President is never on “vacation”. The Office and the job goes with them EVERYWHERE. Technology doesn’t allow anyone to be unavailable with the office/work nowadays, and certainly when you are the President.
No idiot. it wasn’t.
Of course it’s “beyond” you …that’s why Obama’s the President and you’re not
Amen! Finally an honest liberal media assessment of Obama’s fumble. Not meeting with world leaders, one-on-one, in a time of world crisis and instead meeting with the village idiots at The View was embarrassing and extremely un-presidential. Thank God for Hillary!
King Abdullah of Jordan was Jon Stewart’s guest on the show. He clearly said that President Obama’s not meeting with world leaders at the U.N. was a complete non-issue, did not offend or slight any world leaders and was not relevant to Tuesday’s U.N. session… which caused Stewart to back down.
Exactly right.
Considering his own country is a powder of keg of potential insurrection, King A wouldn’t want to go near Obama. The President is doing him a favor.
I love how the so-called intellectual party is embracing the very population they disdain — people who sit on their asses and watch daytime TV shows like The View. Now, who’s pandering to the lowest common denominator? Remind me.
Wait a minute.
In Obama’s reality…Whoopi and Barbara are world leaders along with George, Oprah, Jeffrey, Jay Z, Beyonce and all the others who fill his daily life with joy…and his campaign pockets with money.
Give the president a break.
Sometimes, damnit, even Jon Stewart can be an asshole. Obama isn’t meeting with world leaders for a very good reason, he’s meeting with Joy Behar and Whoopie Goldberg, Barbara Walters and yes, even that creepy Republican woman, all of whom can help him get re-elected a lot more than anyone at the U.N. Frankly, Obama has spent years meeting with world leaders, but he needs votes from stay-at-home moms in six weeks. King Abdullah will not put one more vote in the ballot box on November 6th but Barbara Walters can.
why couldn’t he do both?
And then later in the show……When asked if it were a slight or a problem, King Abdullah said it was no big deal. That no one at the UN expected to meet with the President or thought anything about it.
that’s a very telling statement on how world leaders see our President
No President for a really long time has done it, so Obama is not the only one that neglected the world leaders.
Yes it is an issue. Eastwood was right.
You mean the “Empty Chair” actually TALKED back to him? Eastwood’s a doddering old man who should retire and get med’s for his senility!
Dear John Stewart,
I know you think you are very smart – and rightfully so – but Obama is 10 steps ahead of you – always.
Remember that.
He needs to win an election – that is far more important than having Romney at this world leaders meeting the next go around….
Do the Republicans dumping on Obama for doing the View even recall that Romney has done it too? What a crock to act like the View doesn’t hit an extremely attractive voting demographic. Not to mention there is an increasingly thin line between what is discussed on breezy talkshows and the softballs lobbed on Meet the Press these days.
Um, you are missing the point. It is not that Obama was on The View, which he has appeared before. It is that he chose appearing on The View this time around rather than meeting with WORLD LEADERS. Shows where his priorities are regarding this country. Shame.
“rather” – I doubt he would have talked to the world leaders even if he went on the view… it’s not like it takes days to shoot.
Romney isn’t the President of the United States…….yet. Comparing appearances doesn’t work.

Speaking with the world leaders yet unable to get voted into next presidency is pointless. Getting USA’s support first is priority,
Jon makes a legitimate complaint. For those of you taking issue, would you also be defending Bush if he had done the same thing? In his case he probably would have appeared on Fox and Friends. The answer is no because you see the world through ideology. Same goes for the right wingers. Nobody should be so sacred that we can’t criticize them. This applies to both sides of the political spectrum.
I agree. Jon’s point is that he could have/should have made some time for one-on-one’s with certain leaders. Even 5-10 minutes alone with some would have been a smart move. The media and the public always sees things based on their political bias and it is good that you can still be critical of someone you support.
oh man if Bush did that the NY TIMES would be calling for his impeachment.

I do not care what King Abdullah thinks. Obama is making the “smart choice” by going on a popular fluff talk show to win the election, but that is not what I want our President to do. If he didn’t “have to” visit world leaders, he needs to be doing SOMETHING more important than keeping his job. We come first, and that type of leadership is what should sway voters.
Don’t forget Obama’s recent appearance on the radio show of that cerebral opinion leader “Pimp With a Limp.” What an utter disgrace this joke of a president is.
I think the president is making a statement telling the rest of the U.N. to figure this shit out themselves! The world is always happy to use us as scapegoats on all foreign war related issues, so he saying why don’t you guys come up with a solution and not count on us to throw our military at the problems. If he’s in the room the rest of the world leaders wait on his answers and reactions to react too. So once again.. figure your shit out amongst yourselves and call me later with some answers. I guarantee you that the last time these big indian chiefs caucused nothing productive came out of it other than a bunch of talk! So stop blaming us or let us step in and clean shit up! But figure it out yourselves!
I agreed with Michael – this was a fumble. The international political scene is too chaotic at this particular time in history and for the sitting American President to not meet with “some” of the countries in turmoil and conflict is a missed opportunity to engage the American public into global awareness. Rather he is on The View and certainly sitting in front of $10,000, $25,000 and $40,000 a plate fundraisers. He is as sketchy as every other politician. Which – might just work in his favor that he is “typical” like all the rest and nothing great – or good for this matter. President Obama is so disappointing.
The view idiots keep him from having to bow to a saudiking in an election year. Instead he can call himself eye candy. Someone told meech her shoulders are eye candy and she had all her sleeves cut off because she believed them.
Good thing he had to speak up. This president is clearly not doing his job. I’m afraid of america’s future.
really? the prez was in town to speak to the UN and appear at a fundraiser. we taped that show at 4 in the afternoon on monday. all of you folks sitting around calling folks names should at least have the facts. he spent 1 hour at the view, and had he gone to john stewert would the bitching be the same? we can get the prez in front of voters and ask what we want. there are 5 woman on the view, who in spite of the dumb things written here most of you cant hold a candle to when it comes to whats going on in the world. GROW UP 1 hour given to the View took nothing away from ANYONE.
OMG! Whoopi is whipping it up. Thx for the clarity.
p.s Were you pleased with results?
I’m not sure if this is legal; it definitely won’t be popular; but I’m not sure that any first term president should be campaigning at all. Two years in and they start cranking that up again while considerably neglecting the job that they want to be re-elected for. And they all do it. Bush, Obama, etc. Shouldn’t a first term president be dedicated to problem solving? It’s like current events are immaterial to the president! I find that troubling and, again as with Bush, it isn’t a Republican vs. Democrat thing I’m talking about either. Everybody feels this I think. WHAT…are these people doing? you ask yourself. Look at the world especially at this particular American moment. And the President and the First Lady are making the talk show rounds “plugging” their new term. To me it exhibits absolutely no sense of proportional thinking or decorum regarding the genuine needs, interests, and concerns of the American people whether they’re aware of them or not. Any of ‘em.
Maybe, Obama thought that by meeting with some of the Arab leaders (Morsi’s Egypt especially) would only add more fuel to fire. It would look like America is once again “dictating” to the Arabs and their leaders on how to behave and what to do. Not meeting with them was the best course of action. It’s dammned if you do, and dammed if you don’t, both here and over there. They all have his number is they have something to say, so everyone CHILL.
I have been a fan of Stewart since he began with the show. But I didn’t like this “humor”; I trust the President is not allowing things like appearing on shows to interfere with his job. The guy’s human. Maybe that’s his point!
Wall Street journal today has prime Minister of Israel Netanyahu asking Obama to be more aggressive with Iran. We are talking about Nuclear Powers here. I would trump this over view and campaigning for president. What better way to campaign than to do your job on issues of protecting All!!
His job is to run/improve the country, not get re-elected.
