UPDATE, 6:42 PM: “I’ve worked on a lot of fun movies but my favorite job was having a boss who gave the order to take out Bin Laden and is cool with all of us getting gay married,” Kal Penn told the delegates at the Democratic Convention tonight. “So thank you invisible man in the chair for that,” added Penn taking a dig at Clint Eastwood’s mock Obama interview at the Republican Convention last week. Penn, who used to work at the White House as an Associate Director of Office of Public Engagement, started off his appearance by pretending to accept the party’s nomination for the Presidency before launching into his own policy and legislative heavy speech. “Rahm is a Mayor now so he can’t use four letter words,” said Penn near the end of his 12-minute speech in reference to the Chicago Mayor who was his predecessor on the podium. “But I’m no Mayor, so I got one for you. Vote.”
PREVIOUSLY, 5:42 PM: He won’t be in primetime like Clint Eastwood was at the GOP convention last week. But “Kumar” is addressing the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina around 6:20 PM. The actor also will host a “Live From Charlotte” livestream on Thursday night before President Obama speaks. A big Obama supporter in 2008, Penn left House to become Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement then returned to Hollywood. Penn is in an ad along with his Harold & Kumar co-star John Cho promoting the Livesteam:
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

Any chance of Harold showing up too?
Sure. Why not? He doesn’t have much else to do. It’s not liking he’s still making hit movies like that Eastwood guy.
Some Questions: would any sitting president have NOT given the order to take out Osama Bin Laden given the intell recieved? Is this suppposed to be some courageous thing done by the President or something all American’s would have expected regardless of who the sitting President was at the time? Why does this make Barack Hussein Obama special?
Kal Penn delivered a great speech, he’s a natural.
Really enjoyed this guy — the DNC is putting on a hell of a show … not too sure who I’m going to vote for yet but, egads, these guys make the GOP look like lamers.
It feels like we’re somewhere in the world of A Brave New World, with entertainment replacing actual content.
Politics as ‘theater’ is nothing new. It’s just now, technology (the proliferation of social media) has caught up to really drive in the ludicrous spectacle.
Pass the fiddle, Nero!
Yes, get the two guys who became famous for starring in those pot movies. This’ll win us the election! LMAO.
Given the choice between the two actors doing buddy comedies the guy with the record of making NPH relevant again and someone whose most famous comedy features an Orangutan as the supporting actor(and I don’t mean Jeff Bridges), the former definitely seems like the better choice, especially given even the GOP slamming the choice and everyone in the Romney Camp trying to cast blame elsewhere.
Justin. You are absolutely correct. Those Harold & Kumar flix clearly place Messrs. Penn and Cho on a higher plane than Eastwood’s flimsy body of work. In fact, in addition to the Oscars that Messrs. Penn and Cho received for their performances in those films, they have also received numerous awards for their directing, writing and dramatic acting skills, ranking them far higher in the Hollywood pantheon that that Eastwood guy.
Classic burn. Kudos to you, Curly Bill.
Those stoners are really popular, and people know those are just characters played by popular actors.
So, yeah, Kal Penn helps.
Wow Kal. Gay marriage and the biggest no brainer decision of all time. That’s quite the laundry list of accomplishments. I can see why you’re so proud.
Referring to the specific mission order to send in helicopters to get bin laden for sure–as opposed to bombing the compound–was in no way a “no brainer”–if men had died and the mission had failed, it would’ve cost Obama the Presidency, just like the failed 1979 attempt to rescue the hostages played a huge role in Carter’s defeat. And, if Pres. Obama had chosen bombing, we would never have known for sure bin laden was dead. Particularly given that George W. Bush said “I’m not that concerned about him” (bin laden) and shut down the special unit dedicated to finding him, I’d say Obama deserves significantly more credit.
If George W. Bush had ordered a mission to kill bin laden that was successful, I’d give him credit. It’s very surprising you falsely refer to the tough mission as a “no-brainer,” and equally surprising you can’t give the President the credit most Americans would agree is his due. He took the risk, he gets the reward. (And let’s not have any nonsense about Obama using too many Is in his speeches–George W. Bush used taxpayer money to land on an aircraft carrier, for God’s sake, with a banner that falsely claimed “Mission Accomplished.”)
Great speech. Great night. GOTV!
Sorry, Kal Penn is a glorified affirmative action extra. Possessing zero talent, he couldn’t carry Clint Eastwood’s jockstrap.
Democrats have no shame and their ploy to trash Clint will backfire Big Time.
You are right on the money. Clint is an iconic American hero. Kal Penn is a putz who got lucky same way Jon Cho got lucky. Harold & Kumar was a very funny script they were lucky to be cast in it.
It was written with them in mind…
Penn and Cho both have very good comic timing.
As for you, congrats on winning the lack of melanin lottery.
If Kal Penn is the best they can do then Obama is in real trouble. No Clooney? Couldn’t even dust off Beyonce? Where tha party at?
Yes. I’m sure that if Clooney had given that speech, you wouldn’t have written a screed about the villainous Hollywood elite (which clearly doesn’t include Clint Eastwood). I’d call you a hypocrite, but your side clearly doesn’t care the least lick about hypocrisy.
And if Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert had delivered a monologue talking to an empty chair as if it were Mitt Romney you would be singing their praises for creating one of the cleverest pieces of satire of all time.
No, no, neither Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert can make an appearance at such an event! That would imperil their “objectivity” since they are such a credible news source for so many young people today.
“So thank you invisible man in the chair for that…..” Clint was speaking to an empty chair whereas Kal was thanking an invisible man in an empty chair. Which image is worse? Seems more like a validation of Clint’s message than a rebuke. Bringing it up..yet again…keeps the optics fresh. Just sayin’…..
Nobody can remember Mitt’s speech . . . Eastwood stole the limelight and it lead to zero bounce in the polls. Face it Mitt and his team are lame. Better to wait 4 years for someone who knows what they’re doing.
Congratulations. You just won the award for the most incorrect statement of the day. Are you always this wrong?
Kal killed it
Killed what? His pathetic career?
Clint Eastwood in not a hero. He is an actor who has performed in heroic roles – and then gone back to his air conditioned trailer.
Heroes are people who are willing to give their lives for a greater good. Unfortunately, true heroes are rarely recognized as such while they’re alive. Why? They have usually fulfilled their destiny as heroes.
Clint Eastwood is not a hero.
Hell yeah. Well said.
Dems need to do themselves a favor and ignore the Eastwooding bit. It was barely a ha-ha, and certainly an ultimately forgettable moment that doesn’t really even warrant a response.
The more attention paid to a rare misfire by Dirty Harry, the more it looks like he actually hit something.
Move on to some substance and why Obama should be re-elected, please, because so far, I’m not seeing much of the change we’d been hoping for.
Penn’s “retort” was lame and desperate and appealed only to those who felt the same. Delivered well, though. But then eloquent desperation is what he’s used to working with.
I am still trying to make sense out of the phrase “all of us getting gay married”. And when we are in a world of hurt fiscally, this is a major leg of the platform? “Getting gay married”? If Penn didn’t skip civics class he would know that gay marriage (which I support BTW) will be decided by state referendum, or in legislatures or courts, not by the approval of the chief executive. So what the president thinks of an issue does nothing more than get him in with his key demo. Not enough of them tho since it looks like the A list took a pass on the con.
Clint is an icon. Kal would probably sell his first born to have a resume with half of Clint’s acheivements. Also with all the celebs Kissing O and M’s butts, he’s the best they could do???
kal penn is a tool. and the speech was lame. they could have at least had chris rock come onstage and do 10 minutes of slobbering all over the obamas.
Kal was fantastic. Intelligent, funny, and a great message. All of the speakers were spectacular last night. Dems seem off to a really fantastic start.
WOW
If anybody has watched a full interview with Kal Penn they would realize he’s a decent well-spoken person who happens to be an actor. He is not the roles he plays.
Funny how the right-wingers here mock Penn for doing silly moives when they themselves worship at the altar of an ex-actor President who’s most famous co-star was a chimp named Bonzo.
OK, Kal Penn can can beat up an octogenarian. Fancy words, funny come backs and name dropping the mayor of Chicago. “But I’m no Mayor, so I got one for you. Vote.”
I’m not Clint Eastwood and I’m a little more spry. I’ve got a four letter word for you. Beef.
Go ahead, beat up and old man. Who are you going to brag to?
Slamming Penn for being a comedic actor is a fairly limited view. Keep in mind that he held a legitimate position in the White House, which not just anyone, and probably very few actors could achieve. Of course he is going to take a comedic approach and address the Clint Eastwood fiasco. But he’s active in more than just Hollywood and appears a little more sound of mind than so-called “legend” Eastwood, who appears to have just morphed into his character from Gran Torino.
Based on your comments about Eastwood, AD obviously stands for Attention Deficit, right?
Penn would love to have “half” the career Eastwood has. and the manhood too. Pathetic.
