EXCLUSIVE: Playwright-screenwriter Kate Robin (HBO’s Six Feet Under) and director-producer Jake Kasdan have reunited for a family soap, which has landed at ABC with a script commitment plus significant penalty. 20th Century Fox TV, where Kasdan has an overall deal, is producing. The untitled drama explores what happens when a successful NYC woman suddenly disappears. The lives of her husband, daughter, siblings and parents are turned upside down as they struggle to find out what happened to her while trying to survive the investigation and media circus that considers them as potential suspects, uncovering their darkest secrets. Robin is writing and will executive produce with Kasdan. Kasdan’s development executive Melvin Mar will serve as a producer.
This is the duo’s third consecutive collaboration. The two first worked together on the HBO comedy pilot Spring/Fall starring Tea Leoni and Hope Davis, which Robin wrote and Kasdan directed. Then they teamed for a drama project about the female secret service agents who work on the protective detail of the First Lady, which sold to Fox with penalty last season, also through 20th TV. Kasdan and Mar are with WME, Robin with UTA.

Exchange the words “successful NYC woman” to “teenage girl” and the description almost perfectly fits that of “The Killing.”
I wonder what character Paul Lee would be accurately based on in the Jake Kasdan movie, “The TV Set.” Would he be more of an Ioan Grufford or a Sigourney Weaver.
Only three possible ways she vanished. All soap opera-esque.
1) She ran away to escape her materialistic life.
2) She was kidnapped and is being held for ransom.
3) She was abducted by aliens who want to impregnate her.
2 and 3 are fun but 1 is more realistic she is enjoying watching the news media circus and seeing her family and friends search for her.
Yeah, this sounds like it won’t make pilot.
Someone tell Kasdan he needs a new pic… And some better material.
I thought bad serialized stuff like this was done…
What does PENALTY in this article refer to? Who is being penalized?
ABC will have to pay FOX a certain dollar amount if ABC does not produce the pilot script. The amount of the penalty varies depending on how much demand there is for the script. So ABC has financial incentive to spend money on making the pilot or they can decide to pay the penalty instead.
Kind of messes with potential for the movie version of GONE GIRL. That’s unfortunate.
