In its second outing, Katie Couric’s new syndicated talk show drew a 2.3 household rating/7 share in the metered markets, down 18% from its big series premiere. In women 25-54, Katie posted a 1 rating, down 38%. Even with the declines, it still led all freshman talkers and was outrated only by veterans Ellen (2.9/8 in HH, down a tenth from Monday’s premiere), Live! With Kelly & Michael (2.9/10, even) and Dr. Phil (2.4/7). Katie edged Dr. Oz (2.2/6), after tying the show on Monday, and was way ahead of Anderson Live! (1.1/4).
A big surprise was the big 48% year-to-year drop for last season’s ratings leader Dr. Phil, which had its 11th-season premiere yesterday. The show also debuted a day later last fall because of U.S. Open tennis coverage when it featured an exclusive interview with the parents of Casey Anthony.
Among the other new talk shows, Steve Harvey (1.4/4, 0.9 in W 25-54) has been solid, dropping only a tenth in households from its series premiere last Tuesday and its Monday airing and holding steady in the women’s demo. Things do not look good for Jeff Probst (0.7/2, 0.3 in W 25-54) which dropped an alarming 30% in households and 50% in W25-54 from its Monday premiere. In households, Jeff Probst tied Ricki Lake, who finished dead last on Monday (The show continues to be hampered by restricted carriage of the Tribune station in New York.) But per Twentieth TV, Ricki Lake showed an demo uptick, from 0.4 to 0.5 in W 25-54, the only new talker in positive territory.

If you read the reviews across the US, Katie’s first effort wasn’t, shall we say, stunning. She picked a lightweight as her first guest and showed nothing new to audience and critics alike. While Oprah was a force to be reckoned with, Katie is not exhibiting she will continue winning this time slot. Yes, Oprah’s fame waxed and waned over time, and she didn’t start out a success either. But that was over 25 years ago.
Daytime programming is now as unimaginative and predictable as prime-time. Katie will last the length of her contract, but unless something changes, don’t look for her talk-show tenure to be long. Same goes for the plethora of talkers now being heaped upon an unwilling public.
Probst not a success. No surprise there. It was doomed from the start. Zero appeal as the show’s headliner/host. Stick to Survivor.
The thing is we have had enough of Katie and enough of talk shows. They all have the same guest, talking about the same thing. Let’s bring back the soaps.
During Daytime TV, if you want a talk show, any of the four Networks can accomodate you. If you want a show with any substance, you’d better head for a cable channel. Why all of the Networks are competing with each other with the same type of programming is beyond me. The only differences in these shows is the host/hostess.
Since I’m a soap opera fan, Katie’s ratings are the only thing I’m interested in. She apparently has failed to impress. I have not watched her new show (and do not plan on doing so) but the one thing that I’ve noticed is that her line up of guests is definitely geared towards women. This is another stereotype – that men do not watch soaps or daytime television. Yes they do and by concentrating on women, the show is losing a large part of the viewing audience.
Bring back our soaps and both the men and women will return.
Saw Katie on Leno hyping her show. Katie made it clear her show would be probing discussions of topical subjects…and not be typical talk show lightweight chatter.
Apparently, Katie must have missed her own memo.
We DON’T need anymore “trashy” talk shows!!! Bring back AMC and OLTL…..or I’ll NEVER watch anything on ABC (except GENERAL HOSPITAL, again)
People are still tuning in to to Katie expecting to see General Hospital, she will drop again in day 3.
I liked Jeff Probst, I taped it and watched it after GH. It was uplifting and had some new spins. I’m giving it a try.
I think JEFF PROBST was amazing! I cried and it was unlike all other talk shows, which I normally find dreadfully boring. The little girl inspired me to donate money, and I love their theme of saying “yes!” to life!
I don’t like Katie especially snce she made fun of Al Roker and I don’t like her because she took away two outof three of my soaps Katie is going to go down in te ratings
Entertaining scripted drama has been supplanted by the banal, boring banter and redundant blah blah blah of myriad pseduo-psychiatric gabfests. Couric, DeGraw, and their ilk offer contrived counseling and self-help spin interlaced with endlessly vapid celebrity interviews. Their chief aim is shameless self-promotion designed to perpetuate receipt of undeservedly huge paychecks. Bring back the artsy, kitschy, brilliant escapist fare of One Life to Live and All my children and send the talk show motormouths packing!
Wonder if these networks will ever get it way to many talk shows. The absent of more and more soaps has turn veiwers to cable looking for scripted shows to watch.Who wants to watch non stop someone promoting a movie, book etc. This is what daytime has become.I ctch the first hour every morning for breaking news then flip. Not gonna sit all day to watch non stop talkers. If it wasn’t for General Hospital I would not even have a reason to turn on ABC anymore.so done with all these talker.Networks ran there loyal veiwers away.Wanted this crap Own wouldn’t be failing. You’d think they’d get it.
Simple put we the customer of the networks do not want talk shows. We want soap operas.Scripted romantic fun soap operas.
It’s good to see it’s not taking long for viewers to realize it’s just a talk show. We want are scripted dramas. It would be nice if they would just run them all on a channel like Soapnet. I would pay extra to have a channel that let me watch AMC, OLTL and GH. And run old episodes, flashback marathons, etc. of current and old soap operas. Advertisers need to get a clue and put their money behind shows that people want to watch. We are begging to watch.
We don’t want talk shows, BRING BACK AMC AND OLTL!!!!!! Haven’t watched anything on ABC except GH since they cancelled those iconic shows… We want to escape..we want love in the afternoon!
I agree!! People are used to our soaps being on!! Bring back our soaps from 1 to 4 it’s soap time!! I miss OLTL and hate general hospital coming on at 2!!
Put General Hospital back on at 3!! If abc cancels gh I will never watch abc again!!
