We now have an answer to the question, who is going to produce and finance the remake of the Bette Davis-Joan Crawford classic Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? The answer is Lakeshore partners Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi, who’ll produce with The Aldrich Company’s Adell Aldrich. Robert Aldrich helmed the 1962 original, and as Deadline revealed during Comic-Con, Walter Hill is helming the remake.
Hill, who most recently wrapped the Sylvester Stallone-starrer Bullet To The Head, partnered with The Aldrich Company to develop the remake, which Lukas Heller adapted from the Henry Farrell novel.
Lakeshore will help Hill re-create the nightmarish relationship between two sisters in a crumbling Hollywood mansion, where former child star Jane Hudson (Davis) holds captive her crippled former movie-queen sister (Crawford). “The idea is to make a modern film without modernizing the period,” Hill told me at the time. “It needs to resonate the golden age of Hollywood.” Hill is repped by ICM Partners as is The Aldrich Company.

Jessica Lange as Baby Jane please.
They just… won’t learn…. The hubris to think that these classic films can be remade never fails to amaze me. What made the original work was the added psychotic level of poignancy considering the state of Davis and Crawford’s careers at that point. It’s not something you can just toss back together.
How about “Whatever Happened to Baby James?” this time around?
I thought the Redgraves’ TV adaptation would be (and should be) the final coda on this story.
Please God, don’t go Glenn Close. Just don’t.
Teen: What’s “Baby Jane”
Adult: It’s a great old B&W film starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.
Teen: “Who Are they”?
Adult: Two aging stars from the 30′s and 40′s who made this in the 60′s. For all I know with the remake they will cast it much younger with Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock.
Teen: Who are Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock?
Len Wiseman is not attached to direct this remake? Hooray! Would prefer to see Walter Hill remaking his own The Warriors.
“Baby Jane” has already been remade as a made-for-TV movie. But even with the formidable Redgrave sisters (Vanessa and Lynn) in the leads, the result was disastrous. I know I sound like a broken record but, PLEASE, NO MORE REMAKES!!!
I’d see it with Glenn Close and Meryl Streep playing the sisters.
Sounds like nothing but a perfect Lindsay Lohan / Hilary Duff vehicle.
As much as I’d like to think there may be some original thinking and creativity in Hollywood’s C-suites, there isn’t, and hasn’t been for quite some time. Just at how many times “A Star Is Born”, “Dracula”, and “Frankenstein” have been remade, just to name three. In fact, isn’t Sherlock Holmes the most filmed character? If not, he is in the top 5. No, studios are completely risk-averse and will opt for rehashed titles, or going back to the vault to harvest an od story. “Classic” means virtually nothing to these guys (and gals).
So when Deadline runs the inevitable story about how revenues are down, don’t blame customers or technology. Well made, well written, and even original, moves put butts in the seats, sell pay-per-view and DVDs, and contribute to theater owners revenues.
But for the love of God, let’s NOT remake “Baby Jane” in 3D!
PLEASE: Liza Minnelli as Baby Jane and Cher as Blanche
If they want to make money, they’re going to have to cast Meryl Streep. And, if the script was right, I’d imagine she’d do it. (She did Death Becomes Her)
I can see here in the Joan Crawford role, so it seems like Bette Davis’ would be up for grabs and they could go with a less bankable screen legend. As recommended by a previous poster, Jessica Lange would fit the bill. Or Glenn Close, to another poster’s protest.
Glenn Close and Meryl Streep. Nuff said!
Bob Dylan and Neil Young.
This is just sick.
First of all, Bette and Joan did the movie because they needed the work. Nearly every actress named here so far does not. No one expected the movie to be taken so seriously until they saw what Bette Davis was doing.
But it’s done! It’s over! Please, for God’s sake and the sake of our industry, move on!
“The idea is to make a modern film without modernizing the period.”
Well, Mr. Hill, that’s a lousy one. Brace yourselves, everyone … Incoming!!!
What ever happened to Baby Jane? She’s in her fifties now.
Meryl Streep and Anjelica Houston!
Walter Hill is brilliant- perfect choice to direct. So now… let the casting games begin! Calling all “of a certain age” actresses.
Streep & Close it’s will be great duet!
Jessica Lange and Michelle Pfieffer (SP?) would be glorious casting for this remake.
Please don’t remake this movie again.
But since it sppears they feel they must.
Then let ot be
Meyrl Streep and Glenn Close.
Remaking this is as asinine as when they remade “Psycho”. I suppose those folks needed the work as well.
I saw the original 50 years ago and NEVER forgot it. I thought the remake on TV would be good but it failed by placing it in present day. I think a remake would be okay if it is faithful to the original. This means giving it to actresses who need the work and haven’t been seen lately or appreciated enough. Glenn Close would be great as Jane – I think Bette would cheer her on. Please not Meryl (she is wonderful but overused). For Blanche, how about Mare Winningham or better yet a real child “has been” (Mary Badham from To Kill a Mockingbird or Shirley Temple????? – at least maybe she could make a cameo). I’d like to see this remake get really creative and not bow to bankable stars.
Jessica Lange as Baby Jane and Frances Conroy as Blanche, please. The two already have worked together and Conroy’s role as Moira from American Horror story shows that she would be a good Blanche.
