EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures is setting Len Wiseman to direct The Mummy, the reboot of a franchise whose most recent incarnation grossed $1.25 billion over three films. Jon Spaihts is writing the script and the studio is eyeing a potential summer 2014 release, so things are moving quickly, with Universal eager to ramp back up one of its most venerable franchises.
The film is being produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci through their Universal-based K/O Paper Products, alongside former partners Sean Daniel and Jim Jacks. Latter two produced the version launched by Steve Sommers which starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. That trilogy was based on the Karl Fruend-directed Boris Karloff starrer that the studio made in 1932.
I spoke to both Kurtzman and Wiseman, and they said the script Spaihts is writing puts the gauze-covered villain into a modern-day context.
“When I first heard Universal was relaunching this, that is the image that popped into my head, the period tale, the old monster, but when Bob and Alex pitched it, there was a great new take and approach, and a very different mummy as well,” Wiseman told me. “It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.”
Kurtzman indicated that while they hope to stay in the four-quadrant audience zone same as the last trilogy, that can be accomplished with a darker tone. “We’re reaching into the deep roots of The Mummy, which at its beating heart is a horror movie and then an action movie, and putting it into a context that is real and emotional,” Kurtzman said. “It’s still a four-quadrant film but as a lot of recent movies have proven, audiences are hungry for more than they used to be. You can still have a family movie, an action movie that’s more grounded than these used to be. Without saying too much, we’ve drawn a lot of inspiration from Michael Crichton’s books, and how he ground fantastical tales in modern-day science.”
Wiseman most recently directed Total Recall, and before that he launched the Underworld franchise and helped reinvigorate a franchise with Live Free Or Die Hard.
“A lot of the work with Len has been about creating mythology, and I remember seeing Underworld and finding it a beautiful advancement of the genre,” Kurtzman said. “It was presented in this fresh, incredibly cool concept, but it never gave up its reverence for the mythology and that is what inspired us to meet with Len.”
They first teamed with Wiseman helmed the pilot for the hit CBS series Hawaii Five-0, and they are prepping the pilot for the Fox series Sleepy Hollow.
They have already figured out how to get around the reason I feel the original doesn’t really hold up so well. The bandaged title character moves so slowly than he is no more difficult to elude than a single zombie.
“One of the things that interested me with this mummy is, he’s still in essence a man,” Wiseman said. “They haven’t turned his brain into a monster brain. He still has a personality and is very cunning and calculating. He’s a true character in any form, and in creature form, even if he is that staggering creature, it becomes more important that he’s a thinking, calculating person.”
CAA and Behr Abramson rep Wiseman, while Kurtzman and Orci are repped by CAA, Michael Gendler and Kevin Kelly.

How original.
I love the movie The Mummy and i hope this one also comes out great
“i hope this one also comes out great”
Uhm, you did notice the names Orci and Kurtzman in the article, didn’t you? That’s the Bad Moviemaking Seal of Crap right there. People will be begging Stephen Sommers to come back after they finish screwing the pooch on this one. And Wiseman’s hack-cred makes it even worse.
But it is nice to see O&K still doing their franchise-hopping nonsense. I suspect this will only be slightly more “successful” than Cowboys and Aliens.
What are you, like 10 years old?
“Wiseman most recently directed Total Recall”
So let me get this straight. This talentless douche directs a bomb remake that pretty much everyone – critics and audiences alike – agree was utter crap and pointless, and you’re handing him over a reboot remake. Wow, I swear you studio execs get smarter and smarter every day.
okay it was an ADAPTION of the book, not a fucking remake. there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between those, and a re-imaging, and reboot. if you want the perfect (and ironic) model for what a remake is, watch Gus Van Sant’s Pyscho.(its shot-for-shot,but thats kinda the basic premise of a remake. take the same story and update it to modern times) I actually like the adaption of Total ReKall and True Grit, the only reason why it bombed i think was people are to stupid to tell the difference between an adaption and remake. Honestly I just don’t like Kurtzman and Orci (transformers revenge of the fallen folks?) and the other one was different if anything this feels like the original boris karloft version only modren day. hopefully we can learn form this “reboot”. So I will give it a chance, and hopefully it wont’t be revenge of the fallen.
Er … Total Recall wasn’t a remake!? What planet are you on? You claim that it’s an adaptation of the book instead!? Have you actually read the story? I agree with Bombing Choice. Giving this guy yet another remake after his previous travesty is absolutely insane.
Look people, you know doing any kind of remake or an adaption to a story that’s already been done and has fans is a poison chalice,
Star Trek, sucked,
Day the Earth stood still, sucked like a Dyson,
The A team,
The list goes on, a f-king suckfest designed by comity
But every now and then one works,
The last Batman, or Battlestar, Spiderman, etc
it can be done, but like Lens Total Recall there were people criticizing the film before they’ve even seen it,
I for one prefer the later version, the earlier is crude in comparison, so give the guy a f-king break,
I’m not worried about Len, in fact If it has Lens name on the any project I will be interested in watching it,
I’m more concerned about Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci,
Dude. It was a remake, and it bombed.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Len Wiseman is the definition of “hack”; no imagination, no personal vision at all. Give me Uwe Boll any day…
Please make it stop.
How to make a movie:
1. Attach a famous actor, director, writer, or producer.
2. Number crunch
3. Number crunch
Great idea to reboot a franchise with a director who just grounded another one.
So, the director behind the biggest flop of the summer and the writer behind the most mocked script of the year? What can POSSIBLY go wrong?
Spaihts wasn’t responsible for the final PROMETHEUS script — Lindelof changed it almost entirely from his draft. And if you read Spaihts’ unproduced scripts like PASSENGERS you will see that he’s a very talented writer, albeit in a genre that’s different from this movie.
But I won’t argue with Wiseman being a less than ideal choice for this project.
Fact Check is write, Lindelof is a one trick pony (like james vanderblit) i think it will be interesting to see how this plays out Wisemen is a good director when he’s in his element(which is supernatural action horror)So I tihnk he’ll do an okay job..
Will Kate Beckinsdale play The Mummy?
And staring Kate Beckinsale!!
Now we’re remaking really bad stuff?
I don’t care how much those movies grossed. They really were horse poo. And unfortunately I got a mouth full.
Boooooooooooooooooo
We are going to make the new Mummy a robot. Robo-Mummy. There’s our four quadrant blockbuster. If he’s a robot with genetic enhanced DNA like the Terminator he can be very fast and super strong but still spooky and scary. Also the Karloff version was never a horror film it was a melodramatic romantic potboiler, he came back to life to find his long lost bride. Today’s audience wants a Terminator Robot Mummy Transformer. That’s the ticket for a reboot. This is why Universal is the best studio in town we know what audiences love. They love movies they’ve already seen before.
For all the movies they’ve been hitched to, none of them were quadrant successes.
They certainly speak of reverence of The Mummy, especially the 1999 (date?) version, but putting it into practice seems to be where they have not succeeded.
The “Total Recall” reboot totally sucked.
Universal has now officially left the reservation…
this movie is dead on arrival… literally. *
Uni probably feels Len excels in the ‘horror-adventure’ space.
They’re probably getting him relatively cheap.
He doesn’t develop very well and so they have K/O running point on him here.
It may work (though confidence in K/O isn’t as high as it used to be prior to the Cowboys & Aliens flop.)
wiseman will not disappoint.hes a veteran in mythologies n horror.
More failing upward in the insider Hollywood machine.
Wiseman plus K/O is a PERFECT STORM OF HACKWORK…
The stupidity of which is only eclipsed by the “CREATIVE EXECS” who make this happen.
One: What a lame pitch, this sounds. They better have a first class script.
Two: “They have already figured out how to get around the reason I feel the original doesn’t really hold up so well.” – Excuse me?? They mean Stephen Sommers “Mummy” right? Are they nuts?
Three: What does it take to become a Universal Exec. these days…
After they remake the Mummy, the Universal team should remake Battleship as a musical and then perhaps remake The Bourne series as a hilarious comedy. And, then once they’ve completed those they can start to focus on how to make Curious George more of a hard-core PG-13 Action Spectacle.
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy????????? His movie bombed, his others weren’t memorable at all. How would this be any different than the Stephen Sommers version. I mean seriously what hell are people thinking.
You know standards are dropping when you suddenly have fond memories of a Stephen Sommers film.
Ah ah ah! You just nailed it!!!
I liked the Branden Fraser ones
I thought the first two movies were classics, then it went south quickly. I’m not sure how they can improve on the special effects. It looks good as it is. It is a tired series. They should wait another 10 years before attempting a reboot.
Isn’t it time for a regime change at Universal…
I remember the good ol’ days… and they weren’t so long ago.
You ARE kidding me, right? This is a joke, right?
Hollywood group-think at its finest. Remake of film no one wants: Check. Hack director who just recently made a hacky remake no one wanted: Check. Hack writers who get hired to write/exec. produce everything, with a spotty track record of quality and questionable success, considering everything they make is based on previously established properties, so who knows if they are actually responsible for any financial success???? Check.
This is sure to be a winner.
