EXCLUSIVE: Lifetime has greenlighted Restless Virgins, an original movie which has cast Switched At Birth star Vanessa Marano and former Desperate Housewives co-star Charlie Carver as two of the leads. The film is inspired by Abigail Jones and Marissa Miley’s book Restless Virgins: Love, Sex And Survival In Prep School, an account of the sex scandal, which rocked venerable Massachusetts prep school Milton Academy during the 2004-05 school year.
The movie depicts a world where privileged teens run wild at a New England prep school, thriving on exploitation and manipulation, culminating in a sex controversy. Gilmore Girls alumna Marano will play a scholarship student and the editor of the school newspaper who exposes a sex tape made by the senior hockey players that blows the lid off the controversy. Carver will play one of the students embroiled in the scandal — a wealthy and calculating senator’s son. Jason LaPeyre will direct Restless Virgins from a script by Andrew Cochran (Adult World). Production starts in Vancouver next month. For the past four years, Carver, repped by Main Title Entertainment and TalentWorks, played Lynette Scavo’s son Porter on Desperate Housewives. Marano, prepped by Paradigm, also co-starred on Scoundrels.

Someone should win an award for that title. Best laugh of the day.
I was Vanessa’s third grade teacher (Miss Willins then) and am so happy to see her success in the business. She was a sweet, somewhat shy, beautiful child who always came to school in little (usually pink) dresses. Vanessa was not edgy, wry or sarcastic and it still makes me smile to see her play so often against type. (This may bore you, but it makes me feel happy and proud knowing that every time she reads sides or a script, that I helped her learn to read). En bocca al lupo, Vanessa!
This book was trash and I expect this movie will be as well. I am familiar with the circumstances that inspired the authors of the original Restless Virgins book. The story portrayed in the book has very little to do with events that actually transpired, and based on the synopsis above, this movie seems like it will be even further from the truth.
The authors of Restless Virgins based their story on interviews conducted with young women at a New England prep school, all of whom I know personally. They misled their interview subjects by pretending that they were doing an academic “anthropological study” of the experience of young women at prep schools. In actual fact, they were looking for material to form the basis for their crude, sensationalistic and misleading book, intended for mass consumption rather than academic research.
It was exploitation at its worst. The interview subjects later complained to the authors after the book’s publishing, upset with how they were misrepresented and how they were not allowed to read the book before its publication. Their complaints were ignored.
It sickens me to think that the authors are now profiting even more on the naivety of high school girls, who’s actually experiences were far more complex and nuanced than what was portrayed. Shame on them.
Get over it, it’s a movie. We can put ourselves through actually crappy movies, but we can’t watch something like this? Okay, it may not be a representation of that specific school, but what’s to say it doesn’t happen elsewhere? I think it will be a movie that tackles teenagers in general. Sounds like a good one to me.
I’m not sure what soap box you climbed up on. I just hope it isn’t too high…. obviously you are out of touch with the realities of New England Prep schools. Perhaps you should take a look at the sex scandals associated with BU hockey and then do the little bit of diligence necessary to see the connection between New England Prep schools and scandals like those. Whenever you emerge from the cloud of denial that currently resides between your ears, perhaps you’ll see that your argument is both baseless and pointless…. the movie is getting made, get over it, get over yourself, and most important, get some help.
I go to milton and something funny is Thayer is famous for its smorts, Andover is famous for its art and Milton is famous for its sex scandal
You have no idea what you’re talking about. Seriously. The book and, from the looks of it, this movie are sensationalist, libelous trash, and that hurts real people. Nobody is saying that sex scandals are OK, but the book wasn’t even about the scandal. It took people’s lives, twisted them into thinly veiled characters, and then published them in an effort to make money and gain noteriety. The “authors” should be ashamed of themselves for capitalizing on the stories of confused adolescents. No one deserves to have the most intimate (and often embarrassing) details of his or her high school years published in such a sneaky way, under the guise of research.
Also, Tim Busfield, I’m disappointed in you. You’re better than this, right?!
I am looking forward to seeing this tv movie. I really love Vanessa Marano as she is a very talented actress and she will go a long way. I am glad she is going to be one of the “good guys” in this — at least that is what it appears from the advance publicity.
