EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: Anchor Bay has a deal in place for the Rob Zombie-directed The Lords Of Salem, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival Monday evening in the Midnight Madness program. I’m hearing the deal is in the $1.5 million minimum guarantee range after that distributor had gone up against Image and Millennium Entertainment for the fright film and I’m hearing that the deal fell into place shortly after the premiere screening.
That deal was made with the provision that if a studio came along with a pre-negotiated bigger offer at a higher price point, the film’s brokers could take it. It’s believed Open Road and Lionsgate are possibles here, and the witching hour on that alternative scenario is Friday. Either way it’s a healthy deal for a scary film that played through the roof in its midnight debut before a Zombie-centric packed house. The deal is being brokered by Submarine’s Josh Braun, with the producer Brian Kavanaugh-Jones. I’ll let you know the final outcome of all this when it is decided.
EARLIER EXCLUSIVE, SEPTEMBER 10, 5:59 PM EDT: Going into tonight’s Midnight Madness premiere of the Rob Zombie-directed The Lords Of Salem, there are three pre-emptive bids on the table. I’m hearing Anchor Bay is in the lead for the genre pic, but that Image and Bill Lee’s Millennium are also in the running.
No deal will be made until after tonight’s screening, so a lot of distributors will be staying up late here in Toronto. The pic, scripted by Zombie, combines his backgrounds in music and fright fare. A Salem hard-rock radio DJ’s playing of a sinister heavy metal tune awakens a coven of nasty 17th century witches.

The film stars Bruce Davison, Sheri Moon Zombie, and Dee Wallace and was produced by Zombie, Jason Blum, Oren Peli, Steven Schneider and Andy Gould. IM Global shopped the project here at the Toronto Film Festival. Zombie, of course, previously directed two Halloween remakes and House Of 1000 Corpses among others.

This is also Maria Conchita Alonso’s (Predator 2, Colors, The Running Man)comeback of sorts in a juicy supporting tole, she was last seen on the big screen in Sony Pictures Classics “Caught” back in ’96. Nice to see that this group of motion picture veterans matched with a solid director and outstanding producers can create this much buzz. let’s hope it lands in a progressive team like Radius-TWC that’ll see beyond VOD & physical.
i’m assuming you work for the producer.
the reality of the film industry (unfortunately) is that male actors make comebacks. and the only actress who has ever made a comeback was katharine hepburn. so, for instance, don’t hold your breath that one day gwyneth and reese will make a comeback.
gurl, Katherine Hepburn? Reese Whiterspoon? Gwynneth Paltrow? Did you read the article at all? It’s a frickin HORROR film… Actresses over 40 or 50 make their comebacks IN THESE GENRE FILMS… Miss Crawford and Miss Davis are just an example. Dee Wallace Stone and Maria Conchita Alonso WONT reach the heights of their 80′s stardom anymore BUT if this movie makes it to ACTUAL theaters w P&A it’s a “comeback” on a small scale yet it still is.
So next time you wanna be smug… please read HOLLYWOOD BABYLON or do some research.
Zombie made his name at LionsGate, which had the balls to buy and release House Of 1,000 Corpses from Universal who sat on it for years. Wouldn’t be surprised if they bought this up.
I can’t believe Rob is still making “movies” – He’s an awful director. My goodness. His films are awful. Am I a hater? No, but I have two eyes.
Tom…..you obviously don’t have 20/20 vision despite having two eyes. Rob Zombie is hugely talented! From music to movies he is extremely creative and has a unique style. I would like you to open your eyes to the fact that his work is unlike any other plain and boring snoozefest plots of other horror movies. Rob is fantastic and I hope he continues on his movie making career.
Anyone who says that Rob Zombie is an awful director should never be allowed to even see a movie again. If you don’t like horror then it isn’t Rob Zombie you don’t like, it’s horror movies. As far as music, horror direction and creative… Zombie is unmatched.
As a fan of RZ’s films, I’ll admit they’re not for everybody, but I can’t wait to see this. When he does original horror, he’s one of the best in the genre.
I agree that his originals are pretty unique and better than the usual snoozefest PG-13 crap that gets released on a regular basis ad naseum. However, his two Halloween remakes were absolutely TERRIBLE!!! I look forward to this one, if only to help remove the memory of his god awful and annoying take on Michael Myers.
Looking forward to this one. Loved Devil’s Rejects.
Also Just worked on Hansel & Gretel with Dee Wallace. She is a great actress.
but where is the move version of the epic fantasy BLOODSPILLER
That first picture looks like “Beetlejuice: The High School Years.”
Funny Nathan, I was thinking the same thing!
Devil’s Rejects is a solid film, as is the final part of Halloween. As a huge fan of John Carpenter though, Rob’s versions are pale in comparison. I think he does best with his own work so this has potential.
While I agree that the man has a (possibly) unique voice (at least one that isn’t reaching the mainstream – from others) I do feel that as a filmmaker he still has room to grow and mature. Hopefully this film will realize this growth. Better than his music career of late, as a fan I’ve been very disappointed. His White Zombie musical output was much better.
It’s def. one of his more original works, and there’s some creativity going on no doubt, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that the film makes little to no sense and the story is extremely dull. I was hoping for some more substance. Ah whatever, it’s Rob Zombie, of course someone will buy this thing.
RZ makes horror films for horror lovers and uses classic horror actors he loves. That being said, he missed the boat with Halloween 2 and now they will have to reboot the awful mess of a sequel. He also needs to stop being a hypocrite and if he is going to make us sit thru his wifes awful acting, make her take her clothes off too so we can see what he is tapping. I mean for Christ sake he made all the other actresses take their clothes off but her.
Brian… u misguided fool… Rob Zombie never made a PG13 film and his Halloween is one of the best horror films ever made… definitely the best of the recent string of remakes. Dont talk about shit u dont know about… ITS BETTER TO REMAIN SILENT AND BE THOUGHT A FOOL THAN TO SPEAK AND REMOVE ALL DOUBT…. ALL HAIL ROB-MOTHERFUCKING-ZOMBIE!!!
