EXCLUSIVE: ABC is moving swiftly on casting its newly picked up single-camera comedy pilot Trophy Wife, written and executive produced by Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins and executive produced by Bad Teacher scribes Lee Eisenberg & Gene Stupnitsky. Malin Akerman is in negotiations for the lead in the project, which received a cast-contingent pilot order on Friday.
Produced by ABC Studios, Trophy Wife centers on reformed party girl Kate (Akerman), who finds herself with an insta-family when she falls in love with a man with three manipulative kids and two judgmental ex-wives. The project would reunite Akerman with ABC, where she starred in the comedy pilot Smart One this past season. Following a co-starring turn in Lisa Kudrow’s cult HBO series The Comeback, WME-repped Akerman has been focused primarily on features while being actively pursued for pilots. Her upcoming films include CBGB, The Numbers Station opposite John Cusack and Stolen with Nicolas Cage.

the plight of the funny sexy lady is a tough one, but generally, i think if you want funny, you better make sure they’re funny first and sexy second…Julia Louis dreyfuss and Tina Fey are very attractive, but both very talented comedians and recognized as such primarily. Cameron Diaz crossed over successfully into comedy but broke initially from her exceptional looks and some really strong acting (granted she’s a movie star) but Akerman is neither that pretty nor that strong an actress…I dunno, ive seen her do some improv and she was pretty mediocre, though a nice way about her…Cramming her into a show as the sexy funny lady feels like Tea Leoni redux.
Man, those are some really unkind and untrue things that you wrote about Malin. The woman is stunning and incredibly funny. I have been fortunate enough to work with her and she was great – as was her improv. No need to be so blatantly mean.
i just hated her so much in watchman i will admit it may have clouded my ability to see her clearly …sorry if it came across as mean, this sounds like a friend of yours, and i would most certainly do the same for a friend of mine.
