Malin Akerman is now set to star in ABC‘s recently picked-up single-camera comedy pilot Trophy Wife, written and executive produced by Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins and executive produced by Bad Teacher scribes Lee Eisenberg & Gene Stupnitsky. Akerman had been in negotiations for the lead in the project, which received a cast-contingent pilot order earlier this month. With her on board, the contingency is lifted, and the pilot will be heading to production. Trophy Wife was originally developed last season, and I hear ABC’s decision to give it a pilot order hinged on the producers being able to land Akerman.
Produced by ABC Studios, Trophy Wife centers on reformed party girl Kate (Akerman), who finds herself with an insta-family when she falls in love with a man with three manipulative kids and two judgmental ex-wives. The project reunites Akerman with ABC, where she starred in the comedy pilot Smart One this past season. Following a co-starring turn in Lisa Kudrow’s cult HBO series The Comeback, WME-repped Akerman has been focused primarily on features while being actively pursued for pilots. Her upcoming films include CBGB, The Numbers Station opposite John Cusack and Stolen with Nicolas Cage.

Am I the only one who doesn’t get Akerman’s success? She’s a lovely girl, but I;ve found her painfully unfunny in everything I’ve ever seen her in, from THE COMEBACK to WANDERLUST to ROCK OF AGES. She’s certainly not an enigmatic enough talent that I’d want to build a series around her, so ABC’s attempts to make her “happen” are puzzling to me (the network scooped her up for a plum arc on SUBURGATORY for this fall right after the pilot she did for them last season didn’t go to series too.)
The Silk Spectre herself. She’s so damn hot. Brush off the haters, Malin!
Nope, I’m right there with you. Between Akerman and Diane Kruger, I constantly scratch my head as to how they get cast in anything. The acting is atrocious.
Akerman is great. She’s very, very funny, but she has never been on anything good except The Comeback. And I feel she’s also taken too many small roles, maybe it’s her plan, maybe it’s Hollywood’s plan for her, but she never seems to get THE role. Maybe this is it. But I’ve seen enough to believe she could carry this show.
This is yet another actress to go against Nikki’s unnecessary comment from Sunday.
I thought she was great in The Comeback.
Malin’s “problem” is the perfection of her beauty. Ditto, Kruger. Now, everyone likes different types of girls (those of us heteros, and lesbians anyway). But Malin is 5-8ish, with ash blond hair, blue eyes, a slender body, and symmetrical features. She is not too skinny either. She is textbook beauty. It is hard for an audience to empathize with her. It is unbelievable for her to suffer hardships. And it is hard to empathize with women who look like that. She has been very smart to do supporting roles as the “bitch” or bimbo, or whatever. No one is going to buy her as a sympathetic lead. I always wondered why she didn’t do TV.
She is excellent on Children’s Hospital. She’s got rock solid comedic timing on a show stacked with an incredibly talented cast. Because of the show’s lack of linear narrative, all the characters get constant exposure to each other, so she’s regularly going toe to toe with fantastic funny people like Megan Mullaly, Henry Winkler, Ken Marino, Rob Huebel and Rob Corrdry.
So funny I saw the first comment and thought of Diane Kruger. Then somebody else beat me too it! Not true at all about beauty perfection nonsense – plenty of equally beautiful actresses who can act too.
