While praising his latest series, Showtime’s Homeland, Mandy Patinkin had some harsh words about his previous show, CBS‘ crime drama Criminal Minds. Patinkin left two consecutive CBS series after the second season — medical drama Chicago Hope, which earned him an Emmy, and serial killer procedural Criminal Minds. While Patinkin chalked up the first departure to his desire to spend more time with his family, he blamed his abrupt exit from Criminal Minds to the nature of the show, which often deals with gory and violent crimes. In an interview with New York Magazine, Patinkin said:
“The biggest public mistake I ever made was that I chose to do Criminal Minds in the first place. I thought it was something very different. I never thought they were going to kill and rape all these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year. It was very destructive to my soul and my personality.” Patinkin also addressed the whole crime drama genre. “I’m not making a judgment on the taste [of people who watch crime procedurals],” he said. “But I’m concerned about the effect it has. Audiences all over the world use this programming as their bedtime story. This isn’t what you need to be dreaming about.”
As for his new series Homeland, which is also violent, it is “the antidote,” Patinkin said. “It asks why there’s a need for violence in the first place.”

Um. You’re concerned about the effort of crime drama on America… so you’ve chosen to do “Homeland”???
I just watched the whole 1st season. It was entertaining, but it’s as melodramatically shameless and exploitative as any CBS crime show.
Come on, Mandy.
Have you ever seen Criminal Minds? The violence is not the same at all.
I agree with Morbs. The violence on Criminal Minds is way over the top. Not necessarily in what is shown, but in how things are depicted and discussed. Not for the squeamish. Homeland is not very violent at all. Sure there are some violent scenes, but its not gory in the least.
Yeah, but it’s a show about tracking down serial killers, what did he expect? Most serial killers focus their hobbies on women, it’s a sad and disgusting fact. I’m not a Criminal Minds, mind you, but I did watch it for a while, when Patinkin was on it and tried watching it after he left. And then I realized, Patinkin was the main reason I watched apparently. Look at Dead Like Me, a great show, but without Patinkin it all crumbled.
Alright already. This is the fourth article referring to his displeasure with his previous employment. We get it. He didn’t realize a show about serial killers would be so brutal. Did he not read any of the scripts?
Give me a break. Better yet, stop giving him a forum to air his displeasure. Maybe he should have said something five years ago.
ABSOLUTELY….This guy has been known to be full of himself! With Criminal Minds he reviewed the scripts……now, since he is so delighted to be on the #1 show of cable tv, he doesn’t want to see any scripts beforehand. HE WANTS TO BE SURPRISED….. And Homeland has its share of bad language, sex and horrific violence. I guess he has no issues with these scripts!@#$%^. He should have gotten down on his hands and knees and thanked whatever God he prays to (that’s if he prays) that they gave this self-absorbed bozo another job on tv. Yes, Margie….no one could have said it better than you. BRAVO!
DITTO!
I agree. Mandy Patinkin is too good an actor for that smut. I hate the show. Action and suspence even murder mystery is nothing like that gratuitous violence night after night. I recently got rid of cable and it was one of the few shows that was on every night. I tried to watch. But the sick repetative nature of the nasty brand of violence and the way they go over the gory details just for sensation is vulgar. They never look into obvious clues or inform the public and take public leads. They don’t do door to door- which is the halmark of investigative work. They go for things like an innocent woman tied up being stabbed to death. They always show the bloody bodies. The show has no twists- no suspense or drama either..just vicious killing. It is so SICK it’s propably a serial killers regular entertainment. It’s worse than PORN.
I agree also with Mandy. Also I would like to add whoever picks the actors such as Paget Brester to be replaced and a few others due to costs definitely has no interest in keeping the show Criminal Minds on the air.
When he left Criminal Minds is when I also signed off. I like a lot of heavy depictions of screwed-up subjects, but CM has always felt much less of a depiction of terrible happenings and a more a “let’s see what disturbing stuff we can conjure up this week!” You know, exploitative. That, and the writing was poor. No redeeming qualities whatsoever.
He’ll surely get flack for being so open, but whatever, good for him.
WHEELS UP IN 30
Well, good thing he’ll never need to work for CBS again. Wait, who owns Showtime? Haha.
Where does he say he’d never work for CBS again?
He left CHICAGO HOPE during the second season. After 8 shows because David Kelley was leaving. And Peter MacNicol followed them out the door. Of course, both Kelley and Patinkin returned at the end of season 5 to get a renewal for season 6.
I have to agree with him. Those shows are glossy and exploitative. Clearly there’s an audience for them… which is equally disturbing.
Whether you like or agree with Patinkin’s stated or implied motivations, he is dead-on right about that time period with CBS. You had Criminal Minds, all the CSI shows, Cold Case, Without A Trace, and virtually every time you landed on the network a woman was being held hostage by a psychopath, and…time…is…running…out!
I like a drama/thriller every now and then, but it got to the point where I couldn’t stand to see another actress begging for her life as some sick person licked a knife or a statue or whatever else he (almost always a he) was channeling his perversity through.
But fortunately it looks like CBS has backed off of Woman-Haters Club TV and are back to abusing the audience with sitcoms and reality TV.
Most people raped/killed are women. Most people THAT KILL or RAPE are /men/. Its not a ‘womens hater club’ thing its /reality/ . And crimes in real life tend to be violent.
I didn’t watch CM, but if it’s anything like SVU, then he’s right. That stuff is way too disturbing.
From what little I’ve seen of CM, it is MUCH worse than SVU. It really ups the ante on SVU, in a gruesome and unpleasant way. I have a high tolerance for violence on TV, but CM is just deeply, deeply sickening. And also poorly-written and facile, playing at having real psychological depth but actually being dopey and mindless.
That said, Patinkin seems to like to bail out of TV shows, including decent ones like Chicago Hope. Maybe the writers on Homeland should kill his character off before he can pull the same thing on them. But CM absolutely deserved that treatment.
While I agree with his summary of Criminal Minds, his statement makes it difficult to understand his current gig. I love, LOVE, Homeland, but it’s about as graphically violent as a show can get. If he is as sensitive to such things as he says he is, I’m not understanding how he’s ok working on a production like that.
I have to admit, I love Homeland, and maybe it’s because it’s been about 7 months or so since it aired and maybe i don’t remember, but how is it graphically violent? I only remember a few scenes that were graphic/gory in the entire season. That happens in one episode of Criminal Minds. Also, he’s not just complaining about the violence, he’s complaining that it was exploitive it would seem.
He has every right to feel the way he feels. Just because we don’t agree with it doesn’t mean we should stop supporting Mandy in whatever he does. An amazing actor he is. Do not judge by what is said.
Love him as an actor, but he needs to get over himself.
agreed!! he thinks he rules the show! i love the show now that he’s gone. when he was on it, it was boring, and it was so deep. i was like, can we just get on with the show! he made everything more gruesome by making it deep and violent. there actually are more ligh parts now that he’s gone.
I agree with Just saying, I loved him on the show until I read how he really felt. By the way Mandy, I don’t know where you live but, I have traveled the country and there is so much of this really happening then most people realize. I think you live under a Rock or are in Denial about what really goes on during the night time and right under all of our noses. I have experienced some of it so from one whom has been there, more truth then fiction on CM. When you have been abducted and beaten, I will leave the rest out just know its real not fake. Don’t watch if the kitchen is to hot.
Patinkin’s biggest public mistake was sing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on Letterman, about twenty years ago.
While I admire his acting skills, his observational abilities seem lacking. Pretty much every crime show is the same – violence towards women in sexual context. The most popular feature sexual mutilation and favor either the innocents or punish the wayward.
His observational skills are NOT lacking. You just stated that same thing as he did about crime procedurals.
He was just saying he thinks it makes for BAD bedtime stories. He wasn’t saying CM is the only one doing what they’re doing.
I think he’s taking the worst of CM and shoving it in everyone’s faces. There are certainly examples of such, but there is so, so much more to the series. Had people seen it recently, they’d realize that CM is extremely story-driven. And the story takes place around agents creating profiles as part of the NCAVC.
That’s the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime, folks. Violent. They’ve seen/heard people’s reactions and have gotten better about the perceived gore and whatnot, but it’s hard to have a crime show without gore, especially when dealing with VIOLENT crimes, if that wasn’t obvious.
Joe Mantegna’s character Joe Rossi is a much better character anyway.Mandy was very unprofessional just not bothering to show up after the second season.
Denise , I don’t think that you watch Criminal Minds because if you did you would kbnow that it is David Rossi not Joe . But I do agree with you that Mandy was not a good fit or very professional for Criminal minds I never liked his character anyway he was way too weird.
Only my opinion
I love this Criminal Minds
Actually I do watch Criminal Minds. I simply made a mistake with the character’s name.
There are real cops out there protecting women from these horrible acts, who do this daily, who see the worst of humanity and attempt to stop it, and they get paid FAR FAR LESS than this pompous ass who’s working on a FICTIONAL show.
POMPOUS ARROGANT ACTORS LIKE THIS TRULY TAKE THE INDUSTRY DOWN A NOTCH. THEY COMPLETELY FORGET ABOUT THE REAL WORLD CUZ THEY HAVE YES-MEN AND YES-WOMEN PANDERING TO THEIR EVERY NEED. SOMETIMES THESE EFFIN ACTORS NEED TO BE KICKED IN THE NUTS JUST TO LET THEM KNOW THEY ARE HUMAN.
F-U, MANDY AND YOUR POOR WEARY SOUL.
God bless you for saying this. I hate how Mandy is lourded as this great thespian when, regardless of what acting talent he has, is a remarkable unprofessional jackass who thinks the hardest thing in the world is to be paid thousands if not millions to ACT in a FICTIONAL show about a dark subject.
Kurt Sutter from Son’s of Anarchy Pays scumbags from the USA criminal organization USA hells angels. The USA hells angels have been made famous in the USA for being in the news for decades of harming raping molesting & murdering women & children in real life .
USA hells angels have been know to collect & transport Huge amounts of child porn here in the USA.
The USA hells angels have been standing behind and supporting men that commit all ther above crimes for decades with out fail.
The point is showing reality the violence toward women and children is not the same as supporting it the way Kurt sutter does.
Criminal minds shows real life type stories they are not supporting the perpetrators and they are not putting scumbags on TV and passing them off as tv co stars.
Good for him. These shows (Criminal Minds is the worst offender, but I’m including L & O: SVU and the CSI’s as well) parade around as “crime procedurals” but seriously…so much violence and torture, particularly against women. I mean, how many ways can someone get raped and/or killed? So over it.
PLEASE GET OVER YOURSELF ! Do you watch the news it is 100 times more gruesome then criminal minds and the characters are Great they are professional and feeling Please Get a life?
To be fair, a viewer of ‘Criminal Minds’ gets, with commercials, 22-24 hours of this show a season. Maybe the ideas stick with them but it’s really a relatively short commitment. For him it was a full time, day in, day out, grind of this stuff. I could see that really being too much for a person to be around all the time. Homeland doesn’t have nearly as many episodes so, for him, it’s still less of an all encompassing experience, right?
Mandy, I say give all the money back CBS paid you. Didn’t he go in for a “read” first?
Didn’t he read the script or something about the show BEFORE signing? And he was there almost two seasons, not a day or two so he did notice what the show was about since the very first chapters why wait so long?
Oh, and because Homeland is the ‘safest’ show to do…
Bravo, Mandy.
Sheesh…talk about a guy who really needs to get over himself. Thank heavens I don’t watch anything he’s a part of.
i absolutely agree with Patinkin 100 percent. i wonder if how/why he got involved in criminal minds in the 1st place, but at least he is speaking out now and will hopefully find that most people agree with him on this issue. perhaps it will spawn a new level of creativity and quality entertainment
I get it Mandy that you didn’t like the subject matter (although you gladly took a check every 8 days from the show for two years). The show is heavy and if it’s not your thing, then move on. But if you wanted to leave the show, be a man and don’t just not show up to a table read approx. 15 hours before the cameras were to start rolling for their 3rd season. At least give the producer’s the professional courtesy of sufficent notice that you were not coming back. How CBS (Showtime) accepted you back in to their family is beyond belief.
Bravo,You have a Conscious Mandy, and depth. I feel the same way as do many others. Horror for a buck.
I signed off of Sons of Anarchy as well.
Spreading brutality, horrors and various autraucities for your viewing pleasure.
Just like the nightly news, keep that gloom and fear spreading across the land. No more, thanks, but you all enjoy.
Yes, you’re right. He’s conscious. We all are–at least you need to be to be online. What he doesn’t have much of, though, is a CONSCIENCE. If he had one of those, he wouldn’t have left hundreds of people (cast and crew) in the lurch by just NOT SHOWING UP on the first day of season 3 of Criminal Minds. Someone with a CONSCIENCE would have negotiated his exit from the show graciously, with ample notice, and with a chance for the writers to write an organic exit into the show. And to think, that was the SECOND time he blew off a CBS show because he decided he didn’t want to do it any more.
You are so right, pre coffee, spelled it wrong.
I dont know the guy, work ethics, and most actors I have met are arrogant to a staggering point.(And pre-celebrity,they are people you wouldnt give the time of day)
I do think the manure that we are bombarded with is pathetic.
How did we get to the brain numb where this is entertaining and people who write it called “Genius”? Ahh, burn alive a mans child while he is chained to watch.Dismember women and rape them while your at it, and lets keep that abuse of kids going, its good for ratings. Bravo,Genius.
You dont see it that way, ok.
Just saying my say.
Peace. enjoy the show.
Do you even watch Criminal Minds? Brain numb? Unlike many shows (The Mentalist being an example of a bad offender) Criminal Minds actually knows what they’re talking about. They use real psychology and real cases. Everything that’s happened on the show has happened in real life. The point of the show is that there are people out there that track these terrible people down. And while most of us don’t get to see real police work up close, we do get to see the deductive process here. And since they are based on real crimes, if you pay attention you learn about human nature. You learn about things to look for. You learn not just that there are monsters that do horrible things, but you learn why. And maybe you pick up a thing or two that translate into real life.
Terrible things happen on the show, but unfortunately they happen in real life too. The purpose of the show can be to make you think, because it is well written, and the characters on the show, even the guest stars, are multi layered characters. it’s not like a horror movie where the bad guy is ‘evil’ and therefor kills. The show says ‘why do people do these things’ and explores that question.
If you want to be an ostrich and stick your head in the sand and pretend that bad things don’t happen, fine. But to generalize both the nightly news and shows like Criminal Minds as being nothing but horror and spearing fear without looking at the message or purpose is small minded. Don’t watch if you don’t want to, but that doesn’t make your opinion right.
I have only watched a few episodes, but I can imagine his problem. He was probably pitched a show that would deal with the intricacies of the human psyche. Plus the minutiae of searching for a serial killer and the human drama that exists on a team of people who search for these monsters.
Instead, he got a watered down version of torture porn. But that is what sells. CM had a rough go its first season as it focused on the team stuff. It “took off” once it began to focus on the more jacked up criminals. This isn’t on CBS, it is on the viewing public.
Inconceivable!
