UPDATE: Frank Darabont found gold when he smartly chose the late Michael Clarke Duncan to play the sweet-natured tragic protagonist of The Green Mile, the adaptation of the Stephen King novel. Duncan so nailed a role that was the linchpin of the film that he came from nowhere to get an Oscar nomination and the opportunity to turn in other terrific performances. Darabont issued this statement about Duncan’s untimely passing:
“I’m devastated at the loss of Michael Clarke Duncan, one of the finest people I’ve ever had the privilege to work with or know. Michael was the gentlest of souls—an exemplar of decency, integrity, and kindness. The sadness I feel is inexpressible. Our experience making The Green Mile together was immersive and incredible, a once-in-a-lifetime journey. What sticks most in my mind was his devotion to his craft and the strides he made as an artist during that time, which was beyond inspiring to those of us who took the journey with him. Never has an actor more richly deserved the recognition of an Academy Award nomination than Michael did for his performance as John Coffey.
“Michael has left us far, far too soon. We lost a great man and a great spirit today. My thoughts and condolences goout to his fiancée Omarosa and to his family.”
EARLIER: Michael Clarke Duncan, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in 1999′s The Green Mile, died today at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center. He was 54. The actor had been hospitalized in July following a heart attack. Although Duncan was best known for playing a death row inmate alongside Tom Hanks in the film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel The Green Mile, the actor appeared in dozens of film and TV projects throughout his career, including The Green Lantern, Armageddon, Sin City and The Scorpion King on the feature side and TV’s The Finder and Chuck. He just recently completed In The Hive with director Robert Townsend and the boxing drama The Challenger.

I had the pleasure of meeting Michael once when he came to the ’24′ offices for a meeting. He was such a huge fan of the show and just beamed with excitement as we walked him around the set. He was such a nice man and talented actor and he will be missed.
Very sorry to hear about Michael Clarke Duncan. He was a great actor. May he R.I.P.
Very sad…he was a great actor…I had no idea he was engaged to Omarosa of The Apprentice Fame.
Will always remember him in Talladega Nights. “DONT YOU WISH THAT EVIL ON ME, RICKY BOBBY!”
Agreed. I’m just sick over it. It’s a sad day and a tremendous loss. He was a terrific actor and a great man. He will be greatly missed.

How sad its like we all lost a good friend. What a remarkable actor, thoughts and prayers to his family RIP michael you were loved by all
Micheal Clark Duncan delivered one of the most memorable lines in movies history: when he grabbed the little guys hand holding a metal cup and crushed it while saying, “If I am no king, why’re you on your knees before me?!” Awesome. I was looking forward to seeing him in more movies. A very talented actor and strong man. Very few people out there like that. He also had great charisma. To soon.
Michael Clarke my thoughts are with you and your family. What a great actor R.I.P
May God Bless Michael’s family, friends and all those touched by his work, and his passing. May He also afford safe and secure passage for this gentle Soul on the journey to the great beyond. Enjoy the next chapter, Michael. Feel free to let me know how it ends. We will miss you.
God Bless
R.I.P
Omg!! icant believe this sad news…Mike you will be deeply missed *R.I.P Michael Clarke Duncan*
R.I.P. He had some really great moments on the screen and had a solid reputation as a great guy in real life.
I couldn’t believe that Michael Clarke Duncan is dead at 54. He was a gifted actor. The Finder was a great series,he made his role come alive. I can’t wait to see his last film when it come out. Good luck to the future.
Met him on the set of THE GREEN MILE and several times since – sweetest guy in the world. We’ll miss him.
R.I.P. you were a great actor and a kind sole you will be missed on and off screen. Prayers are being sent to the family and may you all find peace in your time of loss. Now that this wonderful man has passed you will always have an angel by your side looking after you all. God bless
Worked with him many years ago on a “Star Trek” Vid Game project. Was absolutely the most kind, considerate, and generous person I’d encountered. He was in a position at that point where many other people might have seen themselves as being too important to deal with the other actors on the project, yet he was so supportive and encouraging and was an example of how important it is to help others so that the end result is successful. I will miss him tremendously.
An enormous loss, not merely for the industry but for humanity, as well.
It’s really strange because there was just something about him, his eyes, his voice, his smile. Everything about the guy made you love him. He was just such a lovable guy. When I was a kid, I remember reading stories about John Henry and when I first saw Green Mile, it really was magical because I felt like I was seeing John Henry come to life. Michael was epic just like that legend and he will be truly missed. God bless him and my prayers are with his friends and family.
What a loss. He inspired.
so sorry to hear about his death. died so young. rip micheal.
I was stunned when I read the news. Duncan was one of those actors whose appearance and voice made a great impression on you. He’ll be terribly missed by family, friends, colleagues and, including myself, fans.
