In an interview today with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto the GOP presidential candidate seemed to expand his definition of the 47% of the electorate that he says likely won’t support him. He told a small group of contributors a few months ago that President Obama can count on 47% of voters who “are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them…These are people who pay no income tax,” according to a secret recording of the event. But he told Fox News that he was referring to “the perspective of a lot of individuals who are not likely to support me.” He added that “some believe that government should take from some and give to the others….I think that’s an entirely foreign concept.”

Just like Obama goes running to CBS “60 Minutes” when he wants an E-Z interview, did you expect Mitt to get a fair shake at MSNBC?
And, where did Mitt go for his first hard-hitting interview when he picked Ryan – 60 MINUTES!
Gee, Alex, I guess Mitt the Twit likes ‘em “E-Z” too….
This guy is a disaster.
What did he say that was incorrect?
Why the big hubub when what he said was the truth?
Socialism is alive and well in the USA.
Because he didn’t realize when he said those words that he was referring to a LOT of active military families and senior citizens. Not all of the “47%” are what you probably refer to as “welfare queens”.
Does anyone remember Fox News being upset about the secretly recorded video from the Obama fundraiser in 2008? I certainly don’t.
Romney looked completely rattled after this thing broke last night, and not much better after 24 hours had passed on it. Doesn’t look good for the Romster.
To a Liberal of course it doesn’t, but Conservatives agree with EVERYTHING he said and then some.
So Conservatives think that veterans receiving VA benefits and the elderly whose only source of income is social security are “victims”?
And Conservatives think it’s a wise move for Romney to indiscriminately tar those seniors as victims, when this is the one group (besides white males) where Romney leads Obama?
Use your head and think for once.
Speak for yourself… I’m as conservative as they come and found his remarks to be foolishly illuminating. You’ve got to live in a bubble the size of Idaho to believe that 47% of Americans are lazy moochers simply because they chose to vote for Obama.
These tools, with the help of the right-wing media, are running my party into the ground. Unbelievable.
Liberals shocked that Conservatives detest those on the public dole and the slaves it makes those who feel they have to vote for a particular candidate to ensure their checks and EBT cards continue to work.
I went to truck driving school. A large number of guys in the class were war veterans (three of them who were wounded in action). They were part of a program that the government had in place to help vets transition into new careers to support their families. They fall under the 47% that Mitt talks about. Drives me crazy to hear this kind of talk. This dude didn’t pay taxes on an income of hundreds of millions- money in foreign bank accounts hidden from US taxes- TAXES are what it takes to support troops on the ground (1 million per soldier per year – taking into account materiel, equipment, etc) that pisses me off. There are a small percentage of people who fall under the criticism Romney talks about- that is true- there are institutionalized recipients of welfare who look to the government check as their paycheck (I’ve heard some I know say that) But they are not 47 percent of the country!! He is out of whack. GOP’s probs are that they really are all over the map- I wish GOP had a candidate who was a true Republican- we all knew during primaries that none of these candidates was the complete package so we run from Bachmann to Perry to whoever and pretend- but they suck.
“These are people who pay no income tax.”
AND Bush would mail those that do pay income tax a rebate check for a grand or so.
How does a real journalist not ask him the most basic question? Mr. Romney, why would you say that all 47% of Americans not paying any federal taxes are voting for Obama when the majority of them are actually disproportionally from poor southern red states? His opinions are his opinions, but his facts are wrong and it’s so easy to verify.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, oh brilliant one.
Wait a minute. You don’t have to be brilliant at all to realize what you wrote. Only sane, and ever so slightly open minded.
Great, Mitt. If you believe that taking from some and giving to others is a foreign and wrong concept, you will agree to remove all the tax breaks for corporations that allow many, like GE, to net be subsidized by taxpayers to the tune of billions a year.
Romney is right. This needs to be discussed. If we allow Obama to let the countries dependency grow over 50% we are doomed as a nation and that is exactly what Obama wants.
Just because you don’t pay income tax doesn’t mean you don’t pay taxes at all. Payroll taxes, sales taxes, plus all the elderly who are retired? It’s the most misleading figure I’ve ever heard.
Mitt and a lot of his ilk are included in that 47% that don’t pay taxes.
He also made a negative comment about Mexicans in that video. This guy should just drop out now and hand it over to Obama. His campaign is a complete mess. The government has our money. It’s made up of our money. It’s in the re-disruption business Mitt.
Isn’t that what taxes are – “taking from some and giving to others”? That’s a “foreign concept” to him?
“In other words: don’t be stupid and say stupid things” The horror is that the people at the dinner pay´d $ 50.000 for this !
Almost half of the country is on some sort of assistance. Why? How is that fair for those footing the bill?
Citation needed.
It’s fair because you’re lucky enough not to need assistance. Is that so hard to understand?
Or, would it be preferable to you to keep all your income, but have both your legs chopped off?
How about we offer that equation to all the so called “conservatives,” and see how many jump at the offer?
I wonder if that 47% includes those 26 Fortune 500 companies that paid no federal taxes? Or those oil companies that received billions in subsidies AND tax refunds? Oh, and all those off-shore accounts that Mitt and his ilk seem to love to avoid paying taxes? Probably not. So, let’s just bag on the myth of the Welfare Queen poppin’ out kids like a skittles machine while she has a crack pipe in one hand and WIC card in the other. Much more palatable to the already decided. Much. More. Palatable.
You’re talking about GE? It still owns 50% of NBC/Universal.
It probably includes Mitt himself, since he pays only Capital Gains tax and not actual Income Tax like the rest of us.
For a country with so much access to education, it’s amazing how many people willingly staying uninformed about the facts. If Romney wants the elderly, the veterans and the poor to pay higher taxes then he shouldn’t shy away from it. In effect that’s who he is refering to as moochers. The tax system he is now derriding was put in place to make work pay ( under Clinton and Republicans in the 1990′s) , expanded under Bush, and now Romney complains about it ?
It’s a miracle that the elections even are this close.
So Mitt is conceeding 47% of the vote to Obama which means Obama only has to convince 4% of voters to vote for him to win. What a generous guy that Mitt. The more he talks the more he conceeds.
Its clear that Romney is pandering to a certain segment of the population and never meant for this information to see the light of day. Even so, we get an eyes opening glimps at how he intends to govern and his disdane for a large segment of the population. It ain’t pretty .
This is a really dumb remark by Romney. Many millions of Americans who pay no income taxes are planning to vote for him in November. These are people on Social Security, disability, unemployment insurance and welfare. Why insult millions or tens of million of people who support you by calling them free loaders. Romney must get control of the things he says or the election will not even be close.
And don’t forget that many active military families fall under the “47%”. He insulted them, too.
Agree with Tyler. That’s where the real problem is, the journalists. Everyone is so afraid to hold anyone accountable for what they say. Just ask the basic questions about what he said and he’d have to answer. Media’s useless in terms of helping the average person, who relies on it, to get the facts.
