The Republican standard-bearer is heading back into self-described “high risk” territory. “The Governor has been to The View and we have had a wonderful visit. And his team confirms this morning that the Romneys would once again love to join the sharp-tongued chatter in October,” said View co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck reading a statement from the campaign today on the air. In the recently released video of Romney talking to contributors at a private fundraiser back in May, the candidate characterized appearing on the Barbara Walters-led show as having limited value for his campaign. “The View is high-risk because of the five women on it, only one is conservative and four are sharp-tongued and not conservative. Whoopi Goldberg in particular,” said Romney in the video, which has garnered controversy on a variety of fronts this week. Romney also expressed in the video why he didn’t want to appear on Saturday Night Live for fear of not seeming Presidential and how David Letterman “hates” him because he goes on The Tonight Show. Hasselbeck is the conservative View host Romney is referring to. Walters, Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sheri Shepherd are the other hosts of the show. “If you can’t handle four sharped-tongued women, how are you going to handle the country,” noted Shepard today. Walters on the other hand, was diplomatic. “Governor, we would be delighted to have you on in October and we know that you can handle us, OK? Joy will be respectful,” she said. “I’m holding my tongue until he gets here, “ Behar added. Romney has avoided the show this entire Presidential season. The last time he was on The View was back on March 2, 2010.
Not that both candidates have been on a populist TV trails lately. President Obama appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman last night, resulting in the show’s highest ratings in over two and a half years. Romney and his wife Ann appeared in a pre-taped segment on Live! With Kelly and Michael this week also. While there, the GOP nominee revealed that he is a fan of new mother Snookie from MTV’s Jersey Shore, who is not exactly a wallflower herself. ABC and The View had no exact date scheduled for the Romneys’ visit next month.
