Despite what Mitt Romney thinks, the late-night host really doesn’t hate him. In fact, David Letterman thinks the GOP presidential candidate is “delusional” to believe that and he wants him on his show. ”We don’t hate you, Mitt. We don’t hate people,” Letterman told his Late Show viewers last night. “Let me ask you something Mitt. If we hated you, why do we keep begging you to be on the show?” In a recently released video of Romney talking to donors, he told the crowd Letterman hates him because he has appeared so often on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. ”If this is based on being on the Leno show more than our show, does it makes any sense that we would hate a man who has gone through that suffering?” Letterman said. Here’s Letterman’s invite:

Best way to prove you don’t dislike somebody? Call them delusional on national TV.
Dave’s not fooling anyone.
Message to Mitt: Don’t go, you have absolutely nothing to gain. Don’t help him get ratings.
Sorry to hear about Mr. Letterman’s failed operation. The one where they tried to transpant some vestige of funny into him. So sad. He was funny once. Around 1980.
The Romneys should come to New York, see a matinee of “The Book of Mormon.” Mitt should go on Letterman after, say he loves the show even if he hates it, recommend it to everybody, and actually have a conversation with the man. (What would happen? He would lose the Mormons?) It can not be denied. Letterman, Stewart, Colbert, Leno and more – these are power players in the deconstruction of received opinion post-news reports. A nice tee-off to the debates too. And promise to come back after them as well and do it right after. Letterman doesn’t unduly fawn and he has the time to focus things too. I’ve always thought his interviews with politicians (and broadcasters too) are great, novel, original – there’s no formula to them – I think they’re better than Carson’s too but I’m sure the man would demur. It’s a corrosive Will Rogers thing he gets (and has got) goin’ on frankly. (Letterman I mean.)
The point isn’t whether Romney should go on Letterman, the point is why should Romney go on Letterman. Obama loves going on these shows because the questions are as soft as cotton and often answer themselves. Look how big “O” squirmed under some real grilling on Univision 2 days ago. And who gives a darn about Letterman’s feelings anyway?
Another brilliant decision by Mitt, after all it worked out so well for McCain when he ducked appearing with Dave.
Dave letterman looks like the Cryptkeeper and hasn’t been funny in 20 years, Leno is #1–as he should be, since Letterman’s whole schtick was stolen from Leno(*Read THE LATE SHIFT). Even with Obama as a guest, Leno still creamed Letterman. Romney would be nuts to go on that sad old hack’s show.
The Romney campaign doesn’t seem to be able to make the easiest of decisions. Even if Letterman doesn’t like Romney which I doubt is the case. Dave is a pro & he hasn’t sat behind that desk for decades by treating his guests poorly. But in typical Romney
Nothing to gain are you kidding. He has nothing to lose. It’s a late night talk show appearance not the daily show! The only downside is it will be compared to Obama’s appearance & like him or hate him Obama is always the better guest on a talk show.
The last time Leno was funny was in the 80′s when he was a frequent guest on Dave’s show. Leno wouldn’t have the Tonight show if it hadn’t been for Letterman helping his career.
