Fueled by coverage of the secret Mitt Romney tape, The Rachel Maddow Show at 9 PM ET pulled in the top ratings among adults 25-54 for the week of September 17, besting Fox News Channel’s Hannity for the first time since January 19, 2009. Maddow was No. 1 with 567,000 and Hannity was second with 500,000. CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight placed third with 198,000. The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell (Monday – Thursday) at 10 PM also came in at No. 1 for the week with 508,000. FNC’s On the Record w/ Greta Van Susteren was second with 427,000 and CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 was third with 224,000. This was the best week ever for The Last Word and the best delivery in the time period since week of November 3, 2008, according to MSNBC.
FNC primetime (8-11 PM) placed first for the week with 509,000 adults 25-54. MSNBC came in second with 489,000 – its best weekly performance since the week of January 19, 2009.

I cannot think of anyone more annoying and less likable on TV than this woman. Her being a raving lunatic Liberal isn’t even the problem – she’s just awful all around.
Rachel Maddow is amazing, gifted, and a wonderful investigative journalist. Sorry, but she has some very solid fans, and I am one of them. (Also I can think of a billion people ‘less likable’ then her, Ann Coulter for one, etc.) But hey keep watching Fox news. We will happily keep watching Maddow.
She is all around amazing. Listen if you need to hate, then there is a channel for you, it’s called Fox News.
I know! All that intelligence and insistence on facts is just so annoying!
I agree, to her credit she is the most watchable of that fading network called MSNBS. Some times she does criticize Obama and his constant bowing to Wall Street. Credit where credit is do. That aside she is so boring.
You have a right to your opinion. But that won’t change the fact, that Rachel Maddow is the best thing that ever happen to cable news.
You know what I find cute? When the one time every 3 years a MSNBC host tops a Foxnews host in ratings it makes national news.
It’s almost as rare an event as Haley’s Comet.
Well, its discussed because Fox has been on the air much longer, has always had a much larger budget. Trust me, Fox news it NOT happy that their vitriol is being beat by a opening Liberal News station. There is nothing wrong with having a Conservative News Channel and a Liberal News Channel, except in Fox news’ case, they say they are ‘Fair & Balanced’. The jig is up Fox News, and your ratings are down.
MSNBC and Fox debuted the same year — 1995. It’s true that MSNBC only fairly recently became as explicitly left-wing as Fox is right, but the network has been around quite some time.
Good for here. Rachel has come a long way from talk radio and deserves all the praise, she has earned it!
Rachel Maddow Show demonstrated the worst traits of ‘”yellow journalism” with their airing of the tape,IMHOP. New low!
But you had no problem with Fox News constantly running those edited James O’Keefe videos, even after it was proven they were crap?
I’m so glad to see Rachel Maddow leading the airwaves. Her bright informative journalism is wonderful to watch. Haters going to hate, but for all you folks that want to hate, you have your own news station, it’s called Fox News.
Is it just me or do Maddow and Hanity sort of look alike. I mean they could be brother and sister, or brother and brother, whatever I am not judging.
The only way they could be brother and sister is if she grew 120 lbs. heavier and he grew a brain.
Love her. Wish her ratings were much higher. Unlike Fox et al she has no problem inviting any guest to hear their side. She’s actually quite funny and brilliant.
Rachel Rules! Watch her show every night at 9pm with my wife.
Maddow is getting it done…
Rachel is probably the best true journalist on television. Thank God at least some people are watching.
I am offended that you used the word god in your post. Apologize immediately
She is gifted, nice, respectful to her guests and always gets to the truth and covers stories no one else covers that should be big news. Good for her.
Fox, MSNBC, and CNN are as much news channels at this point as TLC is still The Learning Channel. There is no real 24 hour news channel at this point, what we have are three networks with three different slants all of which are full of sound and fury and for the most part, signifying nothing.
It is disappointing really because if you want to watch a news program to find out what has gone on in the world today you are going to be hard pressed to find one. I’ve had to turn to BBC World news and I live in Los Angeles.
It is time for one of these “news” channels to stand up and do their jobs, reporting the news, and leave all of the mud slinging and puffed up bickering to lesser humans.
LOL @ the butthurt Fox News viewers. Bullies getting beat by a GIRL. LMAO
KEEP IT UP, RACHEL
Love Rachel! Contrary to the often screaming headlines, she is smart and measured, willing to have contrary opinions on and engage in respectful discussion. She is pals with Greta Van Sustren, after all!
The viewers minimum standard for watching ANY news commentary program should be “Do they source their material and is it a reputable source?”
The Rachel Maddow Show is one of the best at sourcing their information. Whereas, when one watches Fox, be it Hannity or Bill’O the bloviator, the closest thing to sourcing is when they say “Some people” or some other vague and un-specified group.
As to the ratings issue, it doesn’t take a genius to see that FOX has a corner on Conservative viewers, while CnNN and MSNBC have to split the center to left viewers.
Keep it up Rachel, your journalistic integrity is one of the biggest thorns in Roger Ailes’ paw.
I wathch almost every evening. I had to actually upgraded my cable package specifically to include MSNBC. I wonder how the ratings would be affected if FOX was not part of the basic cable package and an upgrade was required to watch it?
Best news commentary show on the air.
Msnbc is in the basic cable package, in most markets you don’t even need a cable box to get it. What are you talking about?
Her show is *not* news commentary! You are watching a very partisan woman discuss only what she wants to discuss. If you really believe her show is news commentary and this is what you watch every night then you are getting an extremely limited and highly biased political view.
I am not a big fan of her, nor am I fan of Rush Limbaugh, but at least Rush Limbaugh openly admits that he is a Republican partisan trying to influence people’s political views. He does not masquerade as any kind of journalist.
MSNBC has abandoned hard news. Both the website and the network is now 24 x 7 left wing propaganda.
I watch both the Fox News Channel and MSNBC regularly. Do yourself a favor and pick one or two programs on Fox and watch just once or twice a week. Over time, you will have a broader view and you will see just how hypocritical the partisans on MSNBC are (Chris Mathews in particular should be ashamed).
That’s like saying Big Momma’s House beat out Big Momma’s House 2 in the Box Office.
The idea that she is an “investigative journalist” is a joke. She is a complete hypocrite. She constantly blasts Republicans for things that apply just as much, if not more, to Democrats.
Recently, she ranted about the lack of substantive debate in ‘our politics,’ and every example she gave concerned her not knowing Mitt Romney’s position on various issues like drone strikes, and complained that Romney is not raising questions about Obama’s policies nor stating what he would do differently. Not once did she mention the fact that Obama will *not* discuss the economy and the fact that he is trying to make this election about anything and everything but the economy. If Maddow were sincere, then she would be questioning why we are not having any debate about the national debt increasing by almost 60% since Obama took office. If she were sincere, she would use her show to invite debate about the degree to which Obama’s policies are causing the unemployment rate to remain above 8% and the degree to which his policies are responsible for the enormous growth in Americans electing to stay home to collect Social Security disability and subside on food stamps, and she would not only have ringers for Obama on her show while having this debate. Why aren’t you questioning Obama’s utter failure to engage on those issues, Rachel?
Rachel is amazing. Hannity is one who is not truthful. He will always have his ravenous uninformed followers but Rachel is going to do many more amazing thIngs in journalism.
Journalist are supposed to report the news. Not play lapdog for the Dems or the Gop. Her and Hannity are two peas in a pod.
Rachel you rock! Anyone say bad about you, because they are jelouse at you.
I love to listen to Rachel. She ALWAYS quotes and cites her sources, she won a major journalism award for her integrity and, frankly, she’s brilliant with her insights. If she didn’t beat Hannity, who seems to be the opposite in every respect, I would lose my faith in the ability of mass media to cut through the propaganda and let the light in.
I live in Atlanta GA where MSNBC is not part of the basic cable package. I upgraded my cable service because of the Rachel Maddow Show. Rachel is the best in the business in my book. She is in a class by herself. Her humbleness and unselfishness make any fair minded human being to respectfully love her and love her show as well. I watched Rachel paving the way for Chris Hayes and Melissa Harris at MSNBC. TRMS is not only informative, but also educational. We are talking about first class journalism here which does not have anything to do with whatever FNC offers. As Chris Mathews suggested, I wish Pr. Obama religiously watches her show and many others’ on MSNBC. If he had done that, he would have performed better in the first debate. Keep up the great job Rachel and give my best regards to Karen Finney. I admire her too.
