EXCLUSIVE: Fox Searchlight, which distributed the Natalie Portman-starrer Black Swan, is courting Portman to come back into the fold and play the title character in Jackie, the Noah Oppenheim-scripted drama about Jackie Kennedy in the immediate aftermath of the assassination of her husband, President John F. Kennedy.
This project has an interesting past. Darren Aronofsky and Rachel Weisz, then a couple, planned to do it together. Aronofsky, who helmed Black Swan, dropped out when he and Weisz split and she has since fallen out as well. Portman likes the script but her participation will depend on who the director is. If Aronofsky came back, that would be easy, but nothing in Hollywood works out that way, does it? There had been a report that Steven Spielberg was intrigued back in 2010, so it’s not inconceivable that Fox Searchlight will find a director who pleases Portman. I think she is an inspired choice for the role.

Portman is talented, but this story is one of mis-casting, plain and simple. This flick will flop.
You couldn’t be any more wrong. Portman is one of the least talented working actors in this business or on any stage, and her involvement would ensure this movie to be a hit.
there is no way this movie flops. the reason there are so many movies with jackie characters is that people are still intrigued by her and this event. people are going to want to see this movie if they think it will reveal something new about her. natalie has big draw and really loyal fans. this will do well.
It’s sad that Rachel Weisz is no longer involved in this. She looks jarringly like Jackie, and she has much more of the refined gravitas required than Portman, who I still think very much reads like a little girl.
Much much better than Minka Kelly, that’s for sure.
Ugh. Who cares. The umpteenth Jackie movie. 7 people will pay to see it if they’re lucky. Median age: 90.
The rest will watch Roma Downey or Katie Holmes or Joanne Whalley or the laundry list of Jackie movies on TV.
Too bad, i would have seen this film if Rachel Weisz was involved. She not only looks the part but is a great actress. Natalie Portman however not only does not look like Jackie Kennedy but she does not have it in her to pull off the role.
I will take a pass on this.
They should have cast Jessica Pare.
You must be joking !
Right… you are joking ?
You mean the “actress ” responsible for destroying this past season of MAD MEN with her shallow one note hollow performance that dominated most of the episodes.
Casting Natalie Portman is probably the worst casting mistake since Kevin Spacey tried to play Bobby Darin in “Beyond the Sea”. Rachel Weisz actually looks Jackie Kennedy and has the acting talent to bring her to life on screen. Natalie Portman? God no.
I like Natalie Portman, but she is very one-note ( even in Black Swan).
One of the most boring scripts ever written. Jackie tells a reporter how she buried her husband and moved back to Cape Cod. Snooze!!
Oh please, all of you naysayers, they are both fine actresses AND both of them have similar features. I think Portman actually looks more like Jackie O. Have any of you read the script? I can safely guess no. Then how can you judge it? With everyone and their mother making a Lincoln feature of one kind or another, I welcome a class A, theatrical feature about one of our country’s most interesting women, played by one of its finest young actresses, and I’m a hetero male in my thirties. I’d buy a ticket, although I probabaly won’t have to, due to the number of screenings I attend.
I can’t decide if I don’t believe the “many screenings you attend” or whether you’re really a hetero male in his 30s pining for a free ticket to a Jackie Kennedy Onassis flick.
The bottom line– as a poster above notes, this is incredibly well-worn territory, and the casting is classy but unexciting. It would be like announcing a JFK movie starring Ben Affleck.
Lincoln (although not at ubiquitous as Jackie O movies in the past 3 decades) at least has Daniel Day Lewis and Spielberg to its credit.
Script/theme aside, 1 out of 10 (average) agrees with Natalie Portman casting. hmmm
Finally somebody is doing a Jackie O film with the class Jackie deserves and exuded! Can’t wait!
Rachel Weisz may be a great actress but she’s way too old to play that part. Jackie was only 31 when the assassination happened and that’s part of what makes this moment in her life really fascinating. You want the actress playing her to feel dignified but also really young, and Natalie gives you that. Think she’s great casting for this.
Not only does Rachel Weisz looks fifteen years younger than she actualy is but she has the grace, strong will and complex range that the role requires. Natalie Portman is miscast to the point of her making the role a bad joke.
