EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has acquired the rights to Morgan Spurlock’s comedic documentary Mansome for the U.S., U.K. and Canada in a deal with Electus International, the global distribution arm of Ben Silerman’s IAC-owned Electus. The film will be available to Netflix members tomorrow, September 21, 2012. In addition to the exclusive rights deal, Netflix has also acquired the worldwide SVOD rights to the film on a non-exclusive basis. “Netflix has quickly become the home for the biggest stars in entertainment as they continue to offer their customers first run premium content and expand their footprint on a global scale,” said John Pollak, President of Electus International.
While an increasingly common destination for original series, especially serialized dramas, Netflix as an alternative to cable distribution for movies and documentaries is a relatively new territory. After its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, Mansome was released theatrically for a limited run in May. The film is written, directed and produced by Spurlock (Super Size Me) and executive produced by DumbDumb co-founders Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Electus founder, Ben Silverman. Electus International owns the worldwide distribution rights for the film.
Mansome is described as a witty, provocative and entertaining glimpse into what it means to be a man in a world where the definition of masculinity has become as diverse as a hipster’s facial hair in Williamsburg. It follows Arnett and Bateman to the spa as they undergo various beautification rituals while offering amusing stories and observations about elusive male bathroom secrets. The film highlights a wide range of men including champion beardsmen, longtime barbershop owners, known metrosexuals, mustachioed males and professional wrestlers; all intercut with candid, one-on-one interviews and commentary from actor/comedians Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Adam Carolla, Judd Apatow, as well as sociological experts and everyday men and women. The docu also features interviews with John Waters, ZZ Top band members Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons among others.
