EXCLUSIVE: ’2016 Obama’s America’ Filmmaker Reacts To President’s Slam
BREAKING… The Obama-Biden relection campaign online today hit back at the documentary 2016: Obama’s America based on Dinesh D’Souza’s bestselling book. On the Obama website, the campaign claims:
“The worst kind of smear journalism—a singularly disgusting work.”—Columbia Journalism Review on “2016: Obama’s America.”
Right-wing author Dinesh D’Souza has recently released “2016: Obama’s America,” a movie that falsely smears President Obama as having a hidden agenda bent on realizing “anti-colonial” ambitions. A self-proclaimed expert on the President, D’Souza bases the film around his own past works, which were previously described as “the worst kind of smear journalism,” and riddled with “lazy” errors. The result is what Variety calls a “cavalcade of conspiracy theories, psycho-politico conjectures and incendiary labeling” and what the L.A. Times labels a “badly disguised and overly long attack ad.” A look at D’Souza’s record is a look at a history of demonstrably false and ridiculous claims about the President, and “2016” is no exception. In fact, admitting President Obama was born in the U.S. is what Bloomberg calls “as close to moderation as this nutty film gets.”
“2016” promises to show viewers what they “don’t know” about President Obama, but instead reveals what Newsday called a “ranter” peddling conspiracy theories. In place of an actual documentary, D’Souza employs “pseudo-scholarly leaps of logic” to invent an imaginary character who has inherited “anti-colonial,” “Third World” views from his father—whom he last saw when he was 10 years old. The first third of the movie is dedicated to D’Souza’s own life story, baselessly claiming his supposedly similar background gives him a special insight into the President’s thinking.
But the similarities end there. It’s true, for example, that they both spent time overseas as children, and that they both had the privilege of receiving Ivy League educations. But while President Obama’s time as head of the Harvard Law Review won praise for his balanced and even-handed approach, D’Souza helped found a student newspaper infamous for ugly attacks on students and teachers. And while D’Souza is happy to invent claims and ideas from a book the President wrote two decades ago, the offensive and repugnant views in his own past books—which include blaming the “cultural left” for the September 11th attacks and promoting insulting stereotypes—receive little mention.
The rest of the movie similarly strays from reality. D’Souza attacks President Obama’s work to reduce nuclear stockpiles, despite its strong bipartisan support from Democrats and Republicans, including President Ronald Reagan’s former Secretary of State. D’Souza dismisses President Obama’s call for a world without nuclear weapons as a “dreamy idea,” while ignoring that it was President Reagan himself who repeatedly called for “the total elimination one day of nuclear weapons from the face of the Earth.” He even appears to suggest President Obama held views because a onetime friend of his late father did, yet another reason why the AP found the movie’s premise “not plausible” and “almost entirely subjective.”
D’Souza’s “2016” draws largely from his 2010 book “The Roots of Obama’s Rage,” and related columns, writings that have also been extensively mocked and lambasted by commentators of all partisan stripes. Columbia Journalism Review described it as “the worst kind of smear journalism—a singularly disgusting work.” Conservative blogger and professor of theology R.R. Reno slammed D’Souza’s argument, which insinuates that President Obama is not a true American because he is “captive to the ideology of [Kenyan] Luo tribesman from the ‘50s,” as “both unwarranted and misguided.”
That his writings and film are based on lies should not come as a surprise to anyone given D’Souza’s long history of attempting to add a veneer of intellectual respectability to fringe theories, conspiratorial fear-mongering, and flat-out falsehoods. For example:
- D’Souza falsely claimed that President Obama said he didn’t believe in American exceptionalism—when in fact the President has repeatedly praised America’s exceptional identity and core values.
- D’Souza falsely asserted that President Obama funded $2 billion in Brazilian oil exploration even though numerous fact checkers and reporters have noted that President Obama had “nothing to do with the loan.”
- D’Souza falsely charged that President Obama backed Scotland’s release of the Lockerbie bomber only weeks after the Obama administration had put out a statement opposing Scotland’s decision to return Abdelbaset al-Megrahi to Libya and sent a letter to the Scottish government raising the administration’s strong objection.
- D’Souza even claimed that President Obama passed the bank bailouts when the facts clearly show that it was President Bush who signed the Troubled Asset Relief Program into law in October 2008.
It should say enough about D’Souza’s credibility that a movie catering to the Tea Party attacks someone for allegedly “anti-colonial” views. His attempts to hide his lies behind a pseudo-scholarly presentation and glossy production values cannot withstand basic scrutiny. The facts show that “2016: Obama’s America” is nothing more than an insidious attempt to dishonestly smear the President by giving intellectual cover to the worst in subterranean conspiracy theories and false, partisan attacks.
2016: Obama’s America became the second-most-successful political doc of all time, passing $26 million at the box office. Now hot in battleground states and in media coverage, the film was released back on July 13 debut.

Based on D’Souza’s 2010 bestselling book The Roots Of Obama’s Rage, Rocky Mountain Pictures’ 2016 initially opened in one theater in Houston, then expanded to 1,000+ theaters and the 2,000+ locations by Friday. D’Souza says he made the film to motivate moviegoers to question what an Obama second term would look like. Its has advertised nationally on talk radio and cable news channels including Fox News Channel, A&E, History and MSNBC.

Stupid move by the white house.
Up until now you can be sure that the only people watching this film were partisan for the most part. It was just preaching to the choir.
Now though, regular people will be curious to see what this film is all about since it’s got Obama so upset.
Curiosity is a powerful thing. Don’t be surprised to see a slight gross increase this week.
If someone was spreading lies about you and your family you would be pissed off as well
Truth Hurts……. and a LOT too…………..
so does stupidity. except your stupidity is going to hurt all of us.
AMEN!!!
This film has yet to be debunked fact by fact by Obama and the WH. Obama’s views have been hidden by hiding his college records and the WH would have to open those up in hopes to debunk this film. Obama certainly has a very cloaked past and this film outlines that. If Obama wants to debunk this film, they need to do, not just say “it’s all made of lies”. What lies Mr. President?
You can’t really believe what’s in that film. There is less truth in it than Fahrenheit 9/11, and that’s says quite a bit. In the end, people will believe what they want to, not what they should. You want to believe what the film says, so you do. The director comes off like a crackpot in interviews. He’s gone on record saying that Obama is anti-capitalist. Either he has no idea what it means, or he’s deluded.
What is far worse than anything in this film is how much both sides hate the other. You’ll believe ANYTHING if it backs up your vision that Obama and the left want to destroy the US. Nether side wants to destroy the country. They simply have different visions on how to improve it. The quicker Americans realize that, the quicker the country will be better off.
Why do I doubt you’ve even seen the film? “You can’t really believe it!” cries the voice for reason and balance. Like the Quail in Bambi.
Whether I have seen it or not doesn’t change my point. The director is not coming from a place of objectivity. That’s fine, but you have to understand that (Michael Moore is the same). The film is like an essay with a certain viewpoint and he’s altered or ignored facts that don’t back up his opinion.
It also doesn’t change the fact that half the country hates one another so much they have lost complete objectivity when it comes to dealing with the other.
This film and his book come under the heading of “unauthorized biography”. Has D’Souza ever met the president? I think I have to do my own research.
What difference whether he met the prez or not. Many people do docs and autobiographies without ever meeting their subject. Be real. So he would have met the prez…do you think he would have gotten a good slap-on-the-back-good-ole-boy go ahead remark from O? Ridiculous comment you offered.
Watch the movie, listen to HIS OWN WORDS, then speak your opinion. He doesen’t even sound like a democrat. It’s a whole different kind of problem.
Obama is worse than this movie .
Cockroaches always scatter when exposed to the light. This White House must be using Mein Kamph as a primmer on election strategy –”You tell a lie long enough and loud enough, somebody is bound to believe it.” Go see the film and get enlightened.
Less than 1% of the American Population have seen this movie, and that’s if you assume there weren’t any repeat viewers going back for a 2nd dose of conspiracy theories.
Not even a blip on the radar. More people watched the DNC last week than have seen this movie.
The film actually made me dislike Romney even more… any campaign that has millionaires sinking cash (that they get to right off on my dime) into making movies can’t be a good thing.
I wasn’t so enlightened, but rather, confirmed, of what I already thought of Romney.
Don’t change the subject, the focus here is Obama. If he doesn’t want us to believe what’s in this movie then tell us about your past Mr. President, this movie is the only information we have. So show us your childhood and upbringing if this is all false.
Does anyone really care? This whole election is a joke. As always, nothing changes and corruption is king. Democracy is the most over-rated form of government there is. Now let me get back to watching THE TENANT.
This film is scarier than any movie that Hollywood can produce because it pronounces truth. I literally researched over 20 areas in the film to see if it holds water and unfortunately it did. I am ashamed for voting for Obama and wish I had done my research properly prior to having voted the last time. I urge people to research properly so you can see the true Obama. Please save our country and do your research properly.
Dont beat yourself up Christine. There are a lot of us out there who just got so caught up in the glare and just really wanted to be a part of a historic election that we forgot its all about the man, his resume, his record, his beliefs. We are the real swing votes this time, not the registered indies but those of us who might actually be registered Ds but just can’t bring ourselves to make the same mistake twice. And even though D’Souza starts out with a theory he backs every one up with interviews and facts. If Democrats say its a lie, point out the lies.
This film is a right wing partisan joke. Anyone who thinks it’s true also believes that Rush Limbaugh is a journalist. Its embarrassing that so many Americans believe this bullshit about our President.
Have you seen it?
Who ever said that Rush Limbaugh was a journalist? He’s a radio pundit and entertainer. Straw Man much?
And what “bullshit” are you disputing? Everyone I know who has seen it says they actually empathize with Obama afterwards…abandoned first by his father, then by his highly-radicalized mother, grows up with his grandmother while idolizing his father, has those dreams shattered when he meets his father again with hopes he will re-embrace him, but his dad turns his back again. Later, he breaks down in tears at his father’s grave. It’s all right from Obama’s book. The movie does nothing other than give light to Obama’s backstory, his influences, using Obama’s own words from his semi-fictionalized biography (made up girlfriends, etc., not talking about the birther thing) and then speculates on how these events influence him today. The child is the father of the man, as the saying goes. That’s what the film is about. Maybe you should see it.
That all may be so. But the reason people dismiss the film is the “speculation” part. Nothing in Obama’s history proves any of what Dinesh presents as the film’s thesis. He’s taking the facts, in the President’s words, then making an assertion and claiming that his assertion is true. But it isn’t. It’s an assertion. I have seen the film, and I find it remarkable that any educated person would not see right through it. This man is preying on the ignorant, just as Fox News and Rush Limbaugh do. And he’s using a tactic that has always worked well for the right: tell uneducated, religious white people that they are smart if they believe what you are selling. Don’t let the red staters’ anti-intellectualism fool you. They want to be smart so bad. And now they have their own documentary to prove it.
Nothing in the film was implausible. A large part of the world resents America’s military, economic, and cultural clout; there are all too many Americans who feel the same way. It’s not at all a stretch to believe that Obama is one of them, nor that both his mother and his idealized, idolized father agreed.
D’Souza’s hypothesis is that Obama desires to “level the playing field” with reference to America’s power with respect to the rest of the world. If true, it explains much of his foreign policy, as well as his steering the economy so much more deeply into debt.
Could someone please clear up this “anti-colonial” charge laid against President Obama – having fought the revolutionary war to rid this country of colonial rule, why aren’t all Americans anti-colonial?
Comment by confused:
Anti-colonial, meaning that long ago certain land masses were conquered by others and exploited. Radicals still view present day Americans and English as responsible for what their ancestors did. These invasion were by no mean exclusive. Italy was invaded by Africa, Germany invaded Poland, Native American lands were invaded by French, English, Spanish, ie.
It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not! Anything’s fair in politics. Mitt Romney killed Bin Laden!
Whatever, Mitt never said he killed Bin Laden. Anything to take the focus off the facts in this movie.
This movie is the only bit of information that the public has on the Presidents past. What are we supposed to think? If it’s not true then let the President show us the truth.
It astounds me that anyone could interpret Obama’s actions over the past four years as anything but supporting the vested interests of this nation. Unless you think a darker skin tone in and of itself is a sign of radicalism. Obama is a lot more Ronald Reagan than Che Guevara.
Though doubtlessly a success, this is no more the 2nd most successful documentary (not even getting into whether it is a doc) than Ted is a more successful film than Gone With the Wind just because it grossed more when tickets prices were less than 1/10th of what they are today.
I saw the film and thought it didn’t go far enough.
If anything, it shows just how little the television networks and newspapers have done to vet this president. The most negative aspects actually come from the president’s own voice (on video and in narration of his books), yet most voters have no idea because they get their information only from the Obama cheerleaders at the major news outlets, or from comedy shows and Hollywood actors.
If you agree with this president’s agenda, go ahead and re-elect him. But at least learn more about his history beyond the NBC News and LA&NY Times’ blind worship.
Obama wants to intentionally weaken America to make up for colonialism. Seriously, take off the tinfoil hats this has to be one of the stupidest conspiracy theories ever.
And who financed this so-called “documentary”? Last name wouldn’t be Koch or Trump would it?
Gerald Molen. Friend of Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood. Produced Schindler’s List.
Producer does not equal financier. We’ll never know whose shadowy money is behind this.
I was one of the people who helped finance the documentary. Who am I ? A moderate, Democrat who’s supporting Romney this year and may support the Democrat candidate in 2016 depending if he doesn’t hold leftist beliefs.
Rush Limbaugh a journalist like the MSNBC’s journalist? Rush is a shock jock like Howard Sterns or John and Ken at KFI LA
I saw the movie and it made me think. Is that Bad?
Irrespective of the documentary itself this post by Dominic Patten is excellent reporting. I find it interesting how determined they are to deflect any type of criticism whatsoever. The way they go about it is also similar to the “never defend/always attack” tenet of Scientology when they are exposed as bogus pathological liars and anti-social psychopaths. The withering tone and take-no-prisoners selective phrasing is VERY similar. The “Truth Team.” Like a local news crew or “America’s Most Wanted” or some other Saturday night FOX “reality” show…Good God! The “TRUTH TEAM”…back-dated their web page! How is that not taking mail fraud to a whole new level Mr. President? Someone should get the “Reno 911″ crew back together and start a new “reality” show called “The Truth Team.” Could be hilarious. THE “TRUTH TEAM” BACK-DATED THEIR WEB PAGE! That is so freaking funny! You would think that Michael Ovitz were teaching the president ancient “Art of War” mail room tricks!
Found this movie to be very well done. If you can watch Michael Moore’s stuff, you can certainly spend about 90 minutes watching this. Isn’t the country worth that much of your time?
It’s clear no one did their homework on Obama, including the McCain campaign, but many pundits and media outlets are fully in the tank for him, to the point of covering up damaging and legitimate stories. The guy above who mentioned skin tone obviously wasn’t thinking at all since Dinesh D’Souza has approximately the same skin tone as Obama. When you look at the influences and upbringing in Obama’s life in his own words and then examine his actions to date, I can see why the President’s campaign would get squeamish.
I saw 2016 and it was just a horribly produced film that is filled with comments taken wildly out of context and is loaded with ridiculous conspiracy theories.
Here’s a thought- before you comment let us all know if you have seen the movie? If not, by what means can you formulate an opinion?
I saw it – it’s very well done and it makes you think- can we agree thinking is a good thing?
I didnt care to see the movie before but now I want to know whats in it.
I know it’s an election year, but I’m really surprised the administration has even acknowledged this thing. Doesn’t seem like it required more than the annoyed swatting of a fly.
I don’t know why the White House bothered to react to this film. Anyone with even a decent sense of logic can see this film is far, far from credible. I
wanna bet? Watch it first before jumping to the wrong conclusion.
Apparently, it is hitting on a raw nerve in the White House…otherwise they wouldn’t have even bothered with commenting. Truth is very telling, don’t you think?
I saw the movie and loved it. Before I saw it I had my suspicions that there was much about Obama that we needed to know but were not being told. I have never before seen any president’s past be so hidden as if were not ours to know. This attempt by the president, the Democrat Party, and the media to keep us in the dark only has made us even more curious to dig around for the answers. Dinesh’s documentary certainly does help fill in the blanks and not by coincident they fit right in with the pieces we already suspected were true.
I saw the movie – it’s playing in Seattle.
There’s nothing so desperate as a party on the way out – and judging by the half-truths and outright nonsense portrayed as fact, as well as the hilarious comments on this site whenever it’s mentioned, the Republicans are going to be demolished in a couple of months.
I’ll give it this much though, it was entertaining. At least worth 2 stars for that alone.
This documentary is long overdue. I wish it was available back in 2008 BEFORE the drones voted for Obama. We have a man in the White House that the American people know very little about. After 4 years I am praying that enough people are payign attention and now realize the fraud that was perpetuated on the American electorate. This mistake MUST be corrected this November. God help us if it is not.
It’s amusing that you mention “drones”, like the anti-colonial drones, I guess, that Obama’s military has used to decimate Al Queda.
