The election is weeks away, but Late Show With David Letterman can declare a victory of a sort already. President Obama’s appearance last night garnered the show its best overnight rating in more than two and a half years. Tuesday’s show averaged a 4.0/10 in Nielsen’s 56 overnight market, up 60% from its year-to-date Tuesday average. The last time the show saw better ratings was February 9, 2010, when Jennifer Garner, singer Sade and model Brooklyn Decker made appearances and drew a 4.3/10. Last night’s show was Obama’s seventh visit to the Ed Sullivan Theater, and his second since taking office. The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson followed and also had its best overnight rating since February 9, 2010, earning a 1.9/7, a 58% uptick from its Tuesday average this year.

A popular president boosts your ratings.
Nothing says “relating to the common man” like hanging out with Letterman, Jay Z, Beyonce and Clooney
Hate to break it to you, but appearing on a TV show or a fund-raiser is NOT considered “hanging out.” And the Rockefellers, Roosevelts and Kennedys were dynasties of immense wealth, but they never lost their concern for the common man, unlike some modern-day rich folk I could name…
JaySmack Amended : A presidential candidate not choosing to postpone a campaign appearance and, in fact, folding international violence and bloodshed into movie-style promotion of your candidacy’s implicit urgencies boosts ratings when you purposely choose not to address the country about the matter in an appropriate venue like an address to the nation as opposed to a knock-off appearance in the daytime in the Rose Garden with Hillary…which probably happened that way…because he knew that he would be able to make a follow-up appearance on late night television centered around big New York fund-raising. R.I.P. Chris Stevens and more. Always more.
Obama’s got a tough row to hoe trying to keep up with Romney’s donors. That’s what happens when corporations become people.
It’s an unfortunate circumstance for all of us because the real work to rebuild this country will never get done.
When is a popular president planning to appear?
When America’s Got Talent can find one.
Just shows you how bad Letterman’s ratings have been. Has to get the President on his show !!! A shame. Letterman is just a sarcastic liberal who puts people down. No Class, never had it.
Once again, Obama’s improving the economy. Great numbers for Letterman and CBS. THANK YOU MR. PRESIDENT!
